Phillips, Keita and six players who could leave Liverpool in the January transfer window

The Reds have already added Cody Gakpo to their ranks, but who could be on their way out of Anfield this month?

With one signing already completed, Liverpool’s January transfer business is well underway. Cody Gakpo’s £44 million ($52m) switch from PSV caught many fans by surprise, as the Reds added yet another young, promising attacker to their ranks.

It remains to be seen whether that is the last of the incomings at Anfield in the winter window, with the club’s need for a midfield refresh becoming more apparent with each game.

In terms of outgoings, however, we should expect some movement between now and January 31.

GOAL runs through some of the players who could be on their way out this winter…

GettyNat Phillips

Liverpool have done pretty well moving on fringe players in recent years, raising money through the sales of players such as Neco Williams, Marko Grujic, Harry Wilson, Takumi Minamino, Xherdan Shaqiri and Taiwo Awoniyi.

Phillips, though, has been retained, partly out of necessity and partly because the Reds have been unable to find a club willing to pay their asking price.

At 25, the centre-back is surely ready to go and play regular football, and though he is adored by Jurgen Klopp, his staff and his team-mates, there is an acceptance within Liverpool that he is worth more than being merely a fifth-choice option.

Whether he moves on this month will depend on what kind of offers materialise. He is valued at £10m ($12m) and has had interest from the likes of Bournemouth and Fulham in the past.

A loan move, with an option to buy, is the likeliest outcome.

AdvertisementGettyNaby Keita

Are these the final months of Keita’s Liverpool career? As of January 1, the Guinea international is free to negotiate a pre-contract agreement with an overseas club, with the Reds unable to agree an extension with the 27-year-old.

Keita has recently returned to first-team action after a lengthy injury lay-off, and with Liverpool’s midfield looking weak all season, he could well find himself back in the team before too long.

It seems unlikely, then, that he would be sold in this window, especially with interested clubs knowing they could land him for free in a few months’ time. The transfer market, however, can be a strange place, and desperation can make clubs do strange things.

If an offer arrived, Liverpool would have to consider it.

Getty ImagesCaoimhin Kelleher

Klopp believes Kelleher is “the best No.2 goalie in the world”, but what happens if somebody wants to make him their No.1?

At 24, the Ireland international has made fewer than 30 senior professional appearances, and though he can hardly argue at being deputy to Alisson Becker, he probably is one of the few genuinely saleable assets within Liverpool’s squad at present.

It would be surprising if he were sold in January, but it would certainly not be surprising if he looked to move on in the summer. And he should have no shortage of suitors if so.

Liverpool managed to get a couple of young midfielders out on loan in the summer, with Tyler Morton joining Blackburn Rovers and Leighton Clarkson moving to Aberdeen.

Both have done well, but left behind was Cain, a 21-year-old who has been forced to content himself with Under-23s football after a successful spell in League Two with Newport County last season.

He won’t ever become a first-team regular at Anfield, but the versatile, left-footed schemer is good enough to have a Football League career, and it would be a surprise if he did not move on in January, most likely on loan.

Boost for Man Utd? Mathys Tel's agent hints at possible Bayern departure amid reports of talks with Red Devils

Mathys Tel's agent has hinted the teenager could leave Bayern Munich in the summer amid interest from Manchester United.

United are reportedly in talks with Tel over a potential move to Old Trafford. The teenager is thought to be frustrated by his playing time at the Allianz Arena and could be tempted to seek a move away. Tel is yet to start in the Bundesliga this season, with his 17 appearances all coming off the bench for Thomas Tuchel's side.

Gadiri Camara told : "Mathys loves the club, the fans, he wants to be important and win all the trophies here with a strong team. Sometimes you just need to feel like you're on the same path. We'll see very soon, but I'm confident. But if not, we have to consider all options because Mathys knows that he is valuable and will be a top player."

Tel may struggle to break into the first team as he is behind Harry Kane and Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting in the pecking order. Choupo-Moting is expected to depart at the end of the campaign but the Bavarian giants have been linked with a move for a striker and are reportedly keen on Stuttgart's Serhou Guirassy.

Tel will be hoping to take advantage of any first-team opportunities he receives between now and the end of the campaign in a bid to force his way into the starting XI. It remains to be seen if he will stay at the club past the end of the season, but he does have a contract with Bayern until 2027 and so may not come cheap if he does decide he wants a new challenge.

Kallis happy with retirement timing

Former South African allrounder Jacques Kallis has said that his decision to retire from international cricket was well considered and not taken at the spur of the moment

Gaurav Kalra28-Sep-2014Former South Africa allrounder Jacques Kallis has said that his decision to retire from international cricket was well considered and not taken at the spur of the moment. Speaking exclusively to ESPNcricinfo, Kallis revealed he felt “the time was right” to walk away from the game despite making his ambitions of playing the 2015 World Cup in Australia and New Zealand public earlier.”I have always said the day I wake up and I don’t have that feeling of wanting to play international cricket, I’ll call it quits and that’s exactly what happened,” he said. “I was always going to be honest with myself about that. It would have been nice to get through to the 2015 World Cup but I’m certainly not going to play if I am even 1% off from where I should be for international cricket.”Kallis announced his decision to retire after scores of 0,1 and 4 in the three-ODI series against Sri Lanka in July. He had announced his Test retirement in December 2013 after the final Test against India in Durban. “I know I have made the right choice. I sleep comfortably at night,” he said. “I felt I had spent enough time away from home, other things were more important than international cricket to me.”Over the course of his career, Kallis was part of five World Cup campaigns that ended in defeat. He insists the tag of chokers is “overused” and is regarded as a “joke” within the side. According to Kallis “little things have gone wrong at the wrong time” in previous World Cups for South Africa. “Somewhere along the line I can guarantee you South Africa will win a World Cup and the way the team is playing at the moment, there’s no reason it can’t be the one coming up.”While Kallis’ international career might be over after 166 Tests and 328 ODIs, he intends to continue playing T20 cricket around the world for a few more years. Currently in India for the Champions League T20 as a member of Kolkata Knight Riders, Kallis said he enjoyed the role of mentoring younger players. “When I grew up, seniors did that for me. I have 20 years of knowledge and I can pass that on to some of the youngsters and help them become cricketers they want to become.”Knight Riders, who won their second IPL title in three years in June, are currently on a hot streak of 12 consecutive victories. Kallis credited the success to the players getting on well both “on and off the field”. “The side was very cleverly and well chosen. Sometimes being a good cricketer doesn’t mean you are going to become a good team man,” he said. “The side has very much been selected on guys getting on well off the field which sometimes plays a massive role on the field.”They were the first team to qualify for the semi-finals of the CLT20, racking up three successive wins, but Kallis insists there is no talk about the title in the dressing room. “Not a word has been spoken about that yet. We take it one game at a time. That’s been a strength of this side; it’s the reason why we’ve won 12 in a row because we haven’t looked ahead.”Despite the growing popularity of T20 Kallis, who is the second-highest century maker and third-highest run-getter in Test cricket, believes the longest format of the game is “healthy”. “I believe there’s no need to change anything about Test cricket,” he said. “Cricketers still want to be judged at how good they are in Tests. I think T20 has been magnificent for the game, it has speeded up Test cricket, made it more exciting, brought new audiences to Test cricket.”

Munaf and shot selection hurt Mumbai

Mumbai negated the advantage they got by winning the toss and batting on a slow, low track with some poor shot selection that had them reduced to 218 for 6 at the Moti Bagh Stadium

The Report by Amol Karhadkar in Vadodara29-Jan-2015
ScorecardFile photo: Munaf Patel’s second spell, spread over either side of the lunch break, read 8-3-18-2•Associated PressBaroda took a calculated risk by deciding to switch the pitch for their penultimate Group A match, against Mumbai, less than 24 hours before the start of the match. The track they chose was of the slow-low kind, which is likely to get slow bowlers into the game in the latter half of the match. Mumbai somewhat negated that by winning the toss and batting, but then poor shot selection cost them at the Moti Bagh Stadium.Despite debutant Shrideep Mangela’s solid fifty and captain Aditya Tare’s unbeaten 67, Mumbai could only manage 218 for 6.The Mumbai camp received a bigger blow even before the toss; Wasim Jaffer, who had missed five matches after fracturing his right index finger in the season-opener but returned for Mumbai’s last game, was ruled out as a result of being hit on that same finger while batting on the eve of the match. This paved the way for Nikhil Patil’s inclusion, eleven minutes before the toss.Openers Mangela and Akhil Herwadkar managed the experienced new-ball duo of Irfan Pathan and Munaf Patel effectively. On a track that hardly had anything in it for pace bowlers, both bowlers bent their backs to extract appreciable bounce but the left-handed duo of Mangela had Herwadkar left the ball really well. The Mumbai openers were so cautious that the first 10 overs fetched just eight singles. It was only in the 13th over that the first boundary of the match was scored. Mangela flicked Irfan through midwicket for his maiden four in first-class cricket. Later in the same over, he played delightful square cuts that sped to the point boundary.Herwadkar stepped out to Yusuf Pathan’s offspin in the 16th over to punch him through the leg side and open his boundary account. He followed it up with a spanking cover drive in the same over.Just as the duo had started to score freely, Herwadkar attempted a slog off left-arm spinner Swapnil Singh and missed to see the ball crashing into the stumps. Shreyas Iyer, Mumbai’s highest run-getter this season, then found the going tough. While Mangela had started playing even more confidently, Iyer struggled to get used to the nature of the surface.Iyer likes to play his shots but he couldn’t really get accustomed to the pace of the slow track. His short stint at the crease had him playing too early to the spinners. His misery was eventually over minutes before lunch; Munaf was brought on for a short burst and he forced a nick from Iyer to Pinal Shah behind the stumps.Munaf kept his intensity up ever after the break and bowled the spell of the day. Soon after he saw Mangela driving him straight behind his back for his eighth four and raising the bat for a deserving fifty, Munaf extracted a top edge that rested in Swapnil’s palms at gully. Munaf’s second spell, spread over either side of the lunch break, read 8-3-18-2.If the Mumbai batting line-up wasn’t pegged back enough after Mangela’s dismissal, it received a crucial blow ten minutes before tea. Suryakumar Yadav was lucky early on in his innings when Swapnil made a mess of a regulation chance at gully off Irfan. Yadav couldn’t capitalise on the chance as he nicked Yusuf to Shah on the cusp of break.Mumbai were in danger of being bundled out for a paltry total but Tare, who hardly played a false stroke during his patient three-and-half hour knock, then found a brief ally in Siddhesh Lad. Just as the stylish Lad had started looking solid, though, miscued a slog sweep off a full-toss from left-arm spinner Bhargav Bhatt towards Yusuf, who took a neat catch running a few yards backwards. To add to Mumbai’s woes, Irfan trapped Patil in front of the wickets in the penultimate over of the day. That means Mumbai’s long tail will be exposed on day two.

Ziyech struggling in TurkeyCould head back to London in JanuaryAgent labelled exit statement as fake newsWHAT HAPPENED?

According to Turkish outletNTV Spor, Galatasaray are looking to end Ziyech's loan deal in January. The 30-year-old has endured an "ineffective" spell in the Super Lig since he moved on loan to Istanbul from Stamford Bridge in the summer. He has featured in just nine matches so far this season, which has given rise to speculation that his time in Turkey might be over, despite his contract expiring in the summer.

AdvertisementWHAT GEORGE GARDI SAID

Amid the uncertainty, Ziyech's representative George Gardi was alleged to have said in a statement: "Hakim Ziyech's Galatasaray adventure started well, but it did not continue well. We conveyed to Galatasaray that we wanted to leave. Galatasaray will not cause us any difficulties."

However, Gardi set the record straight on his Instagram story, labelling the statement "fake news".

"I never made ay statement on Ziyech and I don't know this person who wrote using my name," he wrote.

Ziyech's future remains uncertain as Mauricio Pochettino might not find a place for him at Chelsea given his options in attack and the squad's bloated nature. For now, Ziyech will shift his focus to international duty with the Morocco national team. He has received a call-up to Walid Regragui's squad for the Africa Cup of Nations and will have his sights set on a deep run at the prestigious international tournament.

Goalkeeper joined Gunners in 2021Has lost his place at presentOften interacts with rival supportersWHAT HAPPENED?

The England international has lost his place in the Gunners team at present, with summer signing David Raya taking over between the sticks. Plenty were shocked at that decision from Mikel Arteta, with Ramsdale famed for his reflexes and confidence with the ball at his feet.

He has made the odd error at times, while never being afraid to interact with rival supporters, and conceded during a chat with Arsenal icon Ian Wright that he needs distractions in order to help him realign focus on match day. Ramsdale said: “If you ask me to focus on a game of football for 90 minutes I'm finished. I can't do it. So that's why I get involved with the fans and I sing along with the songs. Someone's giving me abuse, I'll turn around and give them a bit back. I have had my two/three minutes of sort of madness in my head – straight back to the football. I've got 10/15 minutes of pure concentration again. Next thing you know, half-time is around.”

WHAT THEY SAID

Former Arsenal striker Wright struggled to hide his surprise at Ramsdale offering advice to rivals on a potential weakness in his game, while fans have suggested that the 25-year-old should have kept that secret to himself – with some pointing out goals that could have been a direct result of Ramsdale losing focus, including one effort scored by Southampton in which the Three Lions star appeared to be distracted by a bird.

Ramsdale joined Arsenal in 2021, making a similar admission at that time, and is not the only goalkeeper in world football that needs to switch off occasionally in order to get back into the game. He fills a position that can see him left with little to do for long periods, making it difficult for full concentration to be maintained for a full 90 minutes and beyond.

Christian takes on Notts T20 captaincy

Dan Christian, the Australian allrounder, has taken over as Nottinghamshire’s captain for the NatWest T20 Blast after James Taylor decided to stand down due to his England commitments

ESPNcricinfo staff03-Mar-2016Dan Christian, the Australian allrounder, has taken over as Nottinghamshire’s captain for the NatWest T20 Blast after James Taylor decided to stand down due to his England commitments.Chris Read, the club captain who leads the side in the County Championship, will take charge for the Royal London Cup.Taylor has played in England’s last five Tests following his recall against Pakistan, in Sharjah, and has been a regular around the one-day set-up for more than a year although did not make the final XI in the recent series against Pakistan. His likely role with England during the home summer against Sri Lanka and Pakistan means that chances for county appearances will be limited so he has relinquished the position he has held for two seasons.”Having recently got back into the Test side, and being around England’s team full time in 50-over cricket, it’s right that James focuses on his own game this year,” Mick Newell, the Nottinghamshire director of cricket and England selector, said.”Clashes between our one-day fixtures and the international schedule make it unlikely that he’ll be able to play a major part in our season, so it would be difficult for him to captain on the occasions when he does feature for us.”Since taking on the captaincy in 2014, James has shown himself to be a tactically sound captain, and one that has responded to the extra responsibility with a better level of performance with the bat.”In future seasons, if the schedule is more kind to us, I can certainly envisage him slotting back into the role.”Christian’s role with Nottinghamshire for the 2016 season has recently been expanded to include the Royal London Cup, but while Read will lead in that competition Newell hopes Christian’s T20 expertise will play a key role in the Blast.”Dan brings a great deal of knowledge of how to be successful in T20 cricket, having played it all over the world for a number of years,” he said. “He has leadership experience and it will be good to have a T20 captain who can very much focus on that form of the game.”He’s going to be a key player for us in both white ball formats and we know he sets a very good example with the way he goes about his cricket.”
