Middlesex's middle-order exposed

An exceptional day for Yorkshire sees them on the brink of inflicting Middlesex’s first defeat at Lord’s since May 2011 and achieving their first away win in this fixture since 1987

An exceptional day for Yorkshire sees them on the brink of inflicting Middlesex’s first defeat at Lord’s since May 2011 and achieving their first away win in this fixture since 1987. A total of 13 wickets fell as the visiting bowlers bowled tirelessly through the day to expose fragility in Middlesex’s middle order that up until now had been shielded by the success of their in-form openers Chris Rogers and Sam Robson. It was a heavily overcast start and when play was halted at 11:46 for bad light, you did wonder how Middlesex would deal with the extra intervals. Unfortunately for the hosts, that proved to be the only one. Returning 26 minutes later, Rogers soon departed with only 46 on the scoreboard, and with him the faint hope that the follow-on would be avoided. When it was enforced, the Middlesex captain lasted only five balls into his second innings and, while Robson looked like he was beginning to settle into a groove, he played across the line to a short ball from Adil Rashid that straightened and hurried on to all but end Middlesex’s hopes of saving this match. It is worth noting that of the seven century partnerships Middlesex batsmen have put together this season, only one was scored without either Rogers or Robson, who have featured together in four of them.It is an indication of just how over-reliant Middlesex have been on their opening pair and how lucky they have been that their underperforming middle order had not cost them. Neil Dexter has been the only batsman outside the top two to reach triple figures, while others like Joe Denly and John Simpson have contributed the odd half-century, but nothing more. Dawid Malan has already paid the price for his paucity of red ball runs, and there is little chance he will be the last. For all Middlesex’s batting malaise, the Yorkshire attack put in a near faultless display. The wickets have been shared about this season, as evidenced by the fact that Steven Patterson has the most (24) despite not having taken five wickets in an innings. His haul of four to finish Middlesex off for 175 is his highest to date.Ryan Sidebottom was masterful from over the wicket, particularly to the left handers, taking the vital second innings wicket of Rogers, while Rashid took three valuable wickets in the evening session with some bite and turn that will buoy him going into tomorrow. But it was Liam Plunkett who incorporated some versatility into his bowling repertoire to hammer home Yorkshire’s advantage.”A freedom to smash the deck as quick as I can,” was the response from Plunkett when it was put to him that his control looked as good as it ever has been. On first change in the morning, the onus was on him to plunge the knife into Middlesex and then twist it with the help of Patterson. It took him three balls, as Rogers nicked behind, before he worked over Adam London and then made a mess of Simpson’s stumps with a sharp yorker – “a delivery that can get people out” as he needlessly put it – you would not wish upon the toes of your worst enemy. His last season at Durham was one he was keen to forget – both on and off the field, where he picked a second drink driving charge – so much so that he went down to Headingley as soon as the 2012 season ended to begin his indoor work. A stint bowling into the relatively flat Adelaide decks helped him find some rhythm and confidence. He says he still bowls the odd bad ball – not that they were on show today – but feels experience has taught him to let them go. “You can always take a wicket with the next ball” his new mantra.A good night sleep is on the cards for him and the rest of the Yorkshire side, as they return tomorrow with six wickets to take and, perhaps, a modest total to chase, for a first win in 19 attempts against Middlesex and one which will take them to the top of the Championship.

Sami among wickets as Karachi trounce Lahore

A round-up of matches played in the Faysal Bank One-Day Cup

ESPNcricinfo staff05-Mar-2013Group AMohammad Sami picked up three wickets for Karachi Dolphins as his side romped home to a 103-run win over Lahore Eagles. Sami dismissed three key batsmen as Lahore finished at 206 for 9 in response to Karachi’s tall score of 309 for 3.Karachi were sent in to bat and the top four batsmen responded with half-centuries. Sarfraz Ahmed scored 76, while Saeed Bin Nasir scored an unbeaten 74. The openers, Shahzaib Hasan and Khalid Latif, also chipped in, scoring 63 and 64 respectively. An unbeaten 72 from Razeem Alam and fifties by Zeeshan Ashraf and Sohaib Maqsood helped Multan Tigers coast to a seven-wicket win over Bahawalpur Stags. Chasing a target of 265, Multan’s impressive batting took them home with five overs to spare. Ashraf and Maqsood led the way, adding 105 runs for the second wicket before Alam wrapped up the chase.Earlier, Bahawalpur who chose to bat, made 264, thanks largely to half-centuries from Bilal Khilji and captain Kamran Hussain who consolidated the innings after a dismal start. Offspinner Aamer Yamin was the most impressive bowler for Multan, finishing with figures of 5 for 65, his first five-wicket haul.Hyderabad Hawks registered a massive, 150-run win over Quetta Bears, riding on centuries from Azeem Ghumman and Rizwan Ahmed and a five-wicket haul by left-arm spinner Kashif Bhatti.Ghumman and Ahmed shared a stand of 144 for the second wicket, taking their side to 260 for 2. In reply, the Quetta innings folded for a meager 110 in 33.5 overs. Taimur Ali was the only batsman to make more than 30 as the Hyderabad bowling, led by Bhatti, dominated. Bhatti finished with figures of 5 for 30, while Ghulam Yasin and Zahid Mahmood picked up two wickets apiece.Group BAn all-round performance from captain Khalid Usman helped Abbotabad Falcons beat Peshawar Panthers by 45 runs. Usman took 3 for 31 with his left-arm spin as Peshawar folded for 174 in reply to Abbotabad’s total of 219.Earlier Abbotabad, who chose to bat first, were tottering at 139 for 8 before Usman batted well with the lower order to take the score to 219. He scored 80 off 94 balls, including four fours and two sixes.Karachi Zebras registered an emphatic 92-run win over Lahore Lions. Opener Fakhar Zaman scored a quick century for Karachi and was ably supported by captain Faisal Iqbal as Karachi posted 314 for 6. The pair added 158 for the third wicket to effectively bat Lahore out of the match. In reply, Lahore were dismissed for 222 in the 45th over. The Lahore reply was shaky and although captain Azhar Ali and Fahad-ul-Haq tried to build the innings, the Karachi bowlers struck regularly to restrict them. Fast bowler Rumman Raees picked up three wickets for 21 runs for Karachi.A century from opener Awais Zia and an unbeaten 54 from Yasim Murtaza, who later picked up three wickets, set up a 66-run win for Rawalpindi Rams against Islamabad Leopards. Zia and Murtaza powered their side to a commanding 338 for 7.In reply, Islamabad fell short in spite of a hundred from Babar Azam, and were kept to 272 for 9. The chase began strongly but lost momentum after a cluster of wickets fell towards the end of the innings. Murtaza picked up 3 for 49, while Akhtar Ayub and Hammad Azam took two wickets each.

Eu me senti muito bem.

CSA's acting president persuaded not to resign

Willie Basson, CSA’s acting president, has been convinced not to step down from his post with less than a month to go before the body’s AGM

Firdose Moonda08-Jan-2013Willie Basson, CSA’s acting president, has been convinced not to resign his post with less than a month to go before the body’s AGM. ESPNcricinfo understands Basson had already typed his resignation letter after local media alleged that he was involved in the Aparthied-era chemical warfare program, but a board member persuaded him not to step down.Vincent Sinovich, president of the Northerns Cricket Union, confirmed Basson was about to quit before the two spoke. “I begged him not to resign, and I’ve been on edge waiting to see what he would do,” Sinovich said. “He certainly was thinking very seriously about resigning.”No-one else would have achieved what he has achieved in the time he has been there. We all have a past. Whether he was involved or wasn’t involved [in the government] he doesn’t need to explain himself. It was 30 years ago.”Despite Basson’s change of heart, a source close to CSA’s board said some members will still ask Basson to resign at their meeting on Wednesday. It is at this meeting that CSA will iron out the details of the new board, which must be put in place at their AGM on February 2.The board restructure was put in place after the conclusion of the Nicholson commission – the ministerial authority set up to investigate Gerald Majola’s financial wrongdoing and CSA’s corporate governance structures. Nicholson instructed CSA to reconstitute their board to an 11-member panel (down from 22) and include five independent directors. While CSA’s nomination committee has decided on the independent component of the board, there is dispute over the chairmanship. The committee chose former CSA president Norman Arendse but the current board vetoed that decision. Arendse then took the matter to arbitration and won only to have the South African Sports Confederation and Olympic Committee (SASCOC) raise an objection to independent chairmanship. Wednesday’s board meeting will decide whether CSA will honour Nicholson or obey SASCOC.Whichever route they take, Basson will not sit on the board so his resignation does not have much effect on the presidency. However, if Basson stays on, he will continue in his role as head of the transformation committee, which the disgruntled board members are unhappy with.Their reasons for objecting with Basson continuing in a development role relate to his prior involvement with the old South African government. Although Basson has not elaborated on exactly what he did while involved in the program, his association with it is thought to contradict strongly with the values of democratic South Africa. Those members also blame him for the lack of transformation in South Africa’s Test squad, which is another item on the agenda at the Wednesday meeting. There has been talk that the board is considering legislating the number of black Africans who take the field at all levels.

The Regional Four Day Competition match between Leeward Islands and Guyana, which also marked the debut of Shivnarine Chanderpaul’s son Tagenarine, petered out into a tame draw at the end of the fourth day’s play on Tuesday. Needing 226 runs for a win, Guyana finished at 173 for 6. They will take six points from the match based on a first-innings lead. The Guyana batsmen, led by Leon Johnson, seemingly played for a draw after being sent in to bat on the final day. Openers Rajindra Chandrika and Chanderpaul added 58 runs for the first wicket before the latter was run out.Guyana, who chose to field, gained an early advantage by dismissing Leeward Islands for 182 on the first day. Left-arm spinner Veerasammy Permaul was the most effective bowler for Guyana, taking four wickets for 42 runs. The Guyanese response was largely bolstered by a 109-run, fourth-wicket partnership between Steven Jacobs and Assad Fudadin. Jacobs, who scored the second half-century of his career, top-scored with 75 and the partnership was vital in helping Guyana take a 97-run lead.Leewards Islands came back strongly, as a century from Jahmar Hamilton and a fifty from Montcin Hodge helped Leeward Islands reach 322. Permaul’s miserly 5 for 73 in 38 overs was the standout bowling performance for Guyana.
ScorecardA fine batting performance from opener Devon Smith, who scored hundreds in both innings, helped Windward Islands rout Combined Campuses and Colleges by seven wickets on Tuesday.Set a target of 185 to win, Windward Islands reached their target in just 44.5 overs with Smith scoring an unbeaten 106 off 133 balls. His hundred in the first innings, a knock of 139 off 166 balls, helped Windward Islands gain a 100-run lead over CCC after the latter made 309 in their first innings. Windward Islands’ reply was shaped by Smith’s ton and half-centuries from Dalton Polius and Tyrone Theophile.Windward’s bowlers looked set to bundle out CCC for a small score in their second essay, before a 90-run, seventh-wicket stand between Akeem Dewar and Nekoli Parris helped them reach a respectable 284. Fast bowler Nelon Pascal took five wickets for Windwards in the innings.
