Newcastle & Man City eye Rangers’ Lowry

Frank McAvennie has been left blown away by some Glasgow Rangers transfer news that he has now heard from Ibrox involving Alex Lowry.

The Lowdown: Premier League interest

It has been reported that both Newcastle United and Manchester City are now interested in signing Lowry in the summer, after holding talks with his camp.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/rangers-news-3/” title=”Rangers news!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

He has reportedly rejected a three-and-a-half-year deal at Ibrox, and his current contract expires in 2023, casting a doubt over his future.

The Latest: McAvennie reacts

Speaking to Football Insider, former Scottish Premiership striker now pundit McAvennie has since given his reaction to the news, and was left wowed by the Magpies and City’s interest:

“It’s hard to turn down but he won’t be getting game time down there either.

“If you’re not getting in the Rangers team, you won’t be getting in either of their teams.

“He should be going somewhere where he can play every week, 100%.

“They could arrange to loan him back to Rangers. But he needs to impress between now and the end of the season if he’s going to get into that team, because he’s nowhere near it.

“If Man City and Newcastle are interested, then wow – he’s gonna get a bit of money there.

“But he needs to go somewhere where he can realise that potential, and I don’t think it’s going to be at either of those clubs.”

The Verdict: Keep

Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s team really need to be keeping hold of Lowry if they can, despite what could be tempting financial packages from the mega-rich Premier League clubs.

He is highly thought of at the Teddy Bears, having played four senior games already this season at the age of just 18, as former manager Graeme Murty has even hone as far as to call him ‘remarkable‘.

Nonetheless, with uncertainty over the futures of the likes of Alfredo Morelos and Ryan Kent, there could already be a pathway paved for Lowry to get more minutes in the first team, which will only help his development as he looks to make a mark on Scottish football.

Rangers: Josh McPake set to leave Ibrox

Rangers are open to offers for youngster Josh McPake this summer, according to The Daily Record’s Live Sports Editor Gavin Berry.

The lowdown

The 20-year-old right winger is currently in the midst of a fifth spell out on loan from Ibrox.

After temporary stints with Dundee and Greenock Morton, he has since spent time with three English clubs in Harrogate Town, Morecambe and most recently Tranmere Rovers.

The Morecambe loan was terminated in January following an ankle injury, with Rangers hopeful of an upturn in fortunes when he dropped down a division to the Merseyside club in League Two.

He still has more than two years left to run on his contract at Ibrox.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/rangers-news-3/” title=”Rangers news!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

The latest

Berry wrote for The Daily Record that McPake ‘hasn’t kicked on in the way that he or Rangers would have hoped this season’.

As a result, he is unlikely to make a first-team breakthrough at Ibrox, so the Gers will look to facilitate either a permanent exit or a further loan move during the transfer window.

The verdict

The start of McPake’s time at Prenton Park was positive, with Tranmere manager Micky Mellon handing him six straight starts. However, clearly the Rovers boss wasn’t all that impressed as the 20-year-old has now fallen down the pecking order.

Indeed, since that run of games in January, he has only made the starting XI on three occasions, and he has been an unused substitute in four of the team’s last six matches, featuring for a meagre three minutes.

He is no doubt a talented player, having featured for Scotland’s under-21s in June last year and earned some rave reviews. Simon Weaver, his manager during his time at Harrogate, said that the ‘excellent’ winger is ‘blessed with ability’ and proved ‘too hot to handle’ at times.

However, McPake – who has five goals and three assists to his name so far in his senior career – hasn’t taken the next step this season, and the outlook now looks fairly bleak for him under Giovanni van Bronckhorst at Rangers.

Wilson may not win back Newcastle place

Callum Wilson may not be a ‘main player’ at Newcastle United going forward, insider Dean Jones has told GiveMeSport.

The lowdown

Wilson hasn’t featured for Newcastle in 2022, having sustained a calf injury in the 1-1 draw with Manchester United at the end of December.

Prior to that, he’d started every game for which he was available in the early months of the campaign.

Despite his lengthy absence, Wilson remains the Magpies’ top scorer with six goals, and he also led the way last season with 12.

The Englishman said recently that he hoped to be back in action by the end of this month, or the beginning of May.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/newcastle-news-5/” title=”Newcastle news!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

The latest

Jones says that Newcastle are keen to get Wilson back in the side, but raised doubts about his longevity at St James’ Park.

“They obviously want him back, but I don’t think Callum Wilson is going to be a main player in this team next season, to be honest,” he said.

The verdict

This comes as something of a surprise given Wilson’s goalscoring exploits.

Graeme Jones, who took charge of Newcastle in the brief period between Steve Bruce’s sacking and Eddie Howe’s arrival, has labelled the ‘fantastic’ no. 9 ‘the best matchday finisher’ he’s coached.

What’s more, his £25million replacement Chris Wood has struggled, scoring only one non-penalty goal across his first 14 appearances.

However, the Magpies seem to have their eyes on recruiting younger talent in the position.

They’ve been linked with 19-year-old Reims striker Hugo Ekitike and 22-year-old Benfica hitman Darwin Nunez, and these may be the kind of forwards they want to build around.

Leeds: Pete O’Rourke makes Junior Firpo claim

Journalist Pete O’Rourke believes Leeds United have a ‘problem’ at left-back due to Junior Firpo’s struggles at Elland Road.

The Lowdown: Firpo’s first season

The £10.8m-rated defender arrived in Yorkshire last summer from Barcelona but has struggled to make a significant impact in the Premier League.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/latest-leeds-united-updates/” title=”Latest Leeds United updates!” poster=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/04/cropped-2022-04-02T155252Z_391313781_UP1EI421841M9_RTRMADP_3_SOCCER-ENGLAND-LEE-SOU-REPORT.jpg” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

As per WhoScored, Firpo has received more yellow cards than any other Leeds player and ranks highly for fouls committed. He has also been one of the club’s worst-rated performers, missing 13 games under both Marcelo Bielsa and Jesse Marsch.

Firpo, who Paul Robinson labelled as ‘terrible’ against Tottenham back in February, has been absent in Leeds’ last four games but appears to have made a return to training this week following a knee problem.

The Latest: O’Rourke’s comments

Talking to The Transfer Tavern about the club’s priorities ahead of the summer window, O’Rourke hinted that left-back has been a ‘problem’, name-checking Firpo for his poor form and injury struggles.

“I think left-back is still a problem for the team as well. Right now, Junior Firpo has struggled since his arrival from Barcelona with form and injury.

“A lot will depend on the futures of Kalvin Phillips and Raphinha to decide what else Leeds need to do in the transfer market.”

The Verdict: Full-back needed?

Stuart Dallas has filled in for Firpo in recent weeks, with the Northern Irishman’s versatility proving to be crucial for Marsch in Leeds’ upturn in form.

Marsch and Victor Orta met last week to discuss the profile of players they want to target in the summer, and bringing in another full-back could be handy ahead of his first full season in charge.

Javi Galan, a left-back who can play further forward, has once again been linked with a move to Elland Road in recent weeks, so it will be interesting to see if another full-back comes in over the coming months to rival Firpo and Dallas.

Rangers blogger slams Goldson vs Braga

Respected Glasgow Rangers blogger Four Lads Had a Dream has been left slamming the display of Connor Goldson in the UEFA Europa League on Thursday night.

The Lowdown: Narrow defeat

Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s team suffered a narrow 1-0 loss in their first leg away at Braga, with Abel Ruiz getting the only goal of the game a few minutes before half-time.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/rangers-news-3/” title=”Rangers news!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

It means that they are still in the tie when they take the Portuguese side to Ibrox, but will have to win on the night to have a chance of going through to the semi-final stage.

The Latest: Goldson slammed

Taking to Twitter during the match, Teddy Bears blogger Four Lads Had a Dream was not impressed with a few of the players after the half-time whistle, but took particular aim at Goldson:

“Really poor first half. Big chance came for Sakala & he has to do better. That aside, really poor on ball which is inviting trouble, Goldson especially.

“Tavernier has wasted nearly every set piece & these are the margins. Kamara not offering enough in 10 role either. Need more.”

The Verdict: Poor performance

The central defender did not cover himself in glory in Portugal, only managing to make one tackle all game, while his 76% pass accuracy was the third-worst recorded out of any of his teammates (SofaScore).

Goldson was also inaccurate with a team-high 11 of his long ball attempts, while he was also guilty of losing possession of the ball no fewer than on 17 separate occasions in total, the second-most of any Light Blues player (SofaScore).

Nonetheless, Goldson will need to do better if he is to keep Braga out in the second leg.

Thomas: Benrahma frustration understandable

The Athletic’s Roshane Thomas has claimed that Said Benrahma is right to feel frustrated with being the league’s most substituted player, but added that Jarrod Bowen’s experience could give him hope.

The Lowdown: Benrahma’s unwanted record

The Algerian winger has been substituted more times than any other player in the Premier League this season.

The 26-year-old has been withdrawn on 17 occasions, whilst joint-second Emiliano Buendia and Sergi Canos have left the field of play 14 times (via Premier League Player Stats). Among David Moyes’ squad, Benrahma is followed by Bowen, who has been subbed off 10 times.

The Algeria international has completed the full 90 minutes just three times this season, against Crystal Palace, Leeds United and Brentford – the most recent of which was in October.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/west-ham-latest-news-copy/” title=”West Ham latest news!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

The Latest: Thomas’ verdict on Benrahma

Taking to Twitter, Thomas shared his article for The Athletic regarding Benrahma’s struggles this season under Moyes.

The reporter clearly feels sorry for the attacker, as he captioned the tweet: “Said Benrahma can feel frustrated at being league’s most subbed player – but Bowen gives him hope. #WHUFC”

However, in the article, Thomas pointed out that Bowen was substituted twice as many times (24) as the Algerian last season (12). The English winger has since embarked on a fruitful run of form, having already scored eight goals and set up another 10 this season with 12 league games still to go.

The Verdict: Harsh by Moyes

Statistically, it appears that Benrahma is having a decent campaign. In the Premier League, he has scored five goals and produced four assists, whilst he has netted an impressive three times in six Europa League games.

However, it seems that the manager is not entirely happy, and the attacker seems visibly frustrated by Moyes consistently taking him off when perhaps there are clearer alterations and changes which could be made.

As Thomas pointed out, Bowen went through the same treatment under the West Ham boss and has come out the other side looking like one of the best wingers in the league. Former Irons star Joe Cole has described the Algerian as ‘unplayable’ at times, so it is evident that the potential is there.

Therefore, Benrahma just needs to persist if he wants to continue playing at the highest level, however unfair the situation may appear to be right now.
