Leeds: Journalist drops Raphinha exit claim

Journalist Pete O’Rourke believes that Leeds United will have a ‘major fight’ on their hands to keep hold of Raphinha in the summer, as per GiveMeSport.

The Lowdown: Raphinha subbed v Everton

The Brazilian has been the club’s highest-rated performer this season and has netted eight Premier League goals, twice as many as the Whites’ second-highest scorer, as per WhoScored.

However, Marcelo Bielsa decided to take off the 25-year-old at half-time against Everton on Saturday afternoon. It was purely a tactical substitution, the manager confirmed, with Tyler Roberts – who has scored just nine times in 106 appearances for the Whites – brought on as his replacement.

The Whites ended up losing 3-0 at Goodison Park, and O’Rourke feels that the Brazilian could be on his way out of the club at the end of the campaign.

The Latest: O’Rourke’s comments on Raphinha

Recent reports have suggested that Leeds are confident of finalising a bumper new contract for the winger.

However, talking to GiveMeSport in a story shared on Sunday morning, O’Rourke thinks that Leeds officials could have an arduous task on their hands to try and keep the 24-year-old at the club this summer.

The journalist claimed: “In the summer, they are going to have a major fight to keep hold of him.”

The Verdict: Next few months will be crucial

Should the Whites suffer relegation back to the Championship, then you’d expect that Raphinha would be one of the first players to leave the club when the summer market opens.

Even if Bielsa keeps Leeds in the top flight, the winger may still depart Elland Road, with the likes of Chelsea, Liverpool and West Ham all showing an interest in the Brazil winger in recent months.

In an ideal world, Raphinha will get back to his best between now and the end of the season to keep Leeds in the Premier League and sign a fresh contract, resulting in the best possible chance of him remaining a Whites player for the 2022/23 campaign.

Alan Hunt to coach Central Districts

Alan Hunt, who played first class cricket for Auckland, has been appointed coach of the Central District Stags for the next two years

Cricinfo staff08-Jun-2010Alan Hunt has been named as the coach of Central Districts for the next two years. He replaces England allrounder Dermot Reeve who resigned as coach in April.Hunt averaged 24.45 with the bat, with one century, and 43.78 with the ball over 13 seasons for Auckland, and retired in 1992-93.”I am delighted to have the opportunity to coach the Central Stags and give my assistance to cricket in the Central Districts Association,” Hunt said. “The Stags are already a very good team. I am confident that with the management team now in place, and the planning skills and experience we offer, we can take them to a different level again.”New Zealand Cricket’s general manager Geoff Allott welcomed the appointment. “Alan is held in high regard at all levels of the game and I know that he will add real value to the Stags over the next two seasons,” he said.Reeve led Central Districts to the Plunket Shield four-day final in 2008-09 and won the Twenty20 competition last year, but his tenure was dogged by controversy. There were reports of disharmony between Reeve and the players, and New Zealand Cricket censured and fined him for accusing Auckland’s Ravi Bopara of ball-tampering after a one-day game in December.

Collingwood ready to hand over to Strauss

England’s victorious Twenty20 captain, Paul Collingwood, believes that his team’s triumph in the Caribbean is on a par with last summer’s Ashes win

England’s victorious Twenty20 captain, Paul Collingwood, believes that his team’s triumph in the Caribbean is on a par with last summer’s Ashes win, but insists that there will be no problem whatsoever as he prepares to hand the England captaincy back to Andrew Strauss, who has been taking a break since the end of the tour of South Africa in January.England’s seven-wicket win over Australia in Barbados ended the country’s run of 35 years without a major ICC trophy, and was made possible by an exciting new brand of attacking cricket which was entirely at odds with the diffident displays England have shown in previous limited-overs campaigns. But the focus now returns to Test cricket, with the series against Bangladesh looming next week, and with that in mind, Collingwood was very happy to relinquish the leadership.”Andrew Strauss is obviously our captain in the one-day format and in the Test format,” Collingwood told reporters at Gatwick Airport. “This was solely my job as Twenty20 captain, to go out and win the World Cup, which is exactly what we’ve done. There’s no pressure on him coming back in.”He’s a fantastic leader, and a lot of this kind of success we’ve had over the last few weeks can go down to a lot of the values he and Andy Flower have installed in us over the past year. The team ethic has certainly helped the team gel together and become a strong unit.”With his return to the ranks imminent, Collingwood was able to reflect with satisfaction on his moment of glory. “We went over there to win a World Cup and we achieved that,” he told Radio 5 Live. “It’s a massive achievement. We’ve had a monkey on backs having not won an ICC trophy and put that right. It’s right up there with last year’s Ashes win.”We had a team with plenty of belief and a team with plenty of skill. The brand of cricket we played was exciting, and we really took it to the opposition. Really it was about consistent performances right the way through and we built on that momentum right the way through to final.”

Bruno Guimaraes set for Newcastle medical

A major update has emerged on Newcastle United’s efforts to seal a deal to sign Bruno Guimaraes from Lyon in the January transfer window.

What’s the talk?

Daily Mail journalist Craig Hope has issued a fresh claim on their attempts to close the transfer, as Eddie Howe seeks to complete his third signing of the transfer window after Kieran Trippier and Chris Wood.

Hope tweeted late on Thursday night: “Newcastle hoping to complete Bruno Guimaraes medical tomorrow.”

Howe will be salivating

This news will surely leave Howe salivating as his mouth waters over the prospect of Guimaraes holding up a Newcastle shirt alongside him in an official announcement photoshoot sooner rather than later.

Completing a medical will represent a huge step in their journey to completing the signing, as it will alleviate any worries over his physical condition, with the Brazilian – hopefully – not carrying any issues which will affect him in the long-term.

Fabrizio Romano has reported that the Magpies have agreed a fee which could rise to €48m (£40m) with Lyon and that he will sign a contract until 2026. This suggests that the medical could be the last piece of the puzzle before the Magpies are able to announce his arrival on Tyneside.

This is why Howe’s mouth will be watering over this latest update, as the midfielder is poised to link-up with the rest of the Newcastle squad ahead of their next Premier League match. It could also mean that the move is in place prior to deadline day, which will relieve the head coach as he will have no need to worry about scrambling to get the deal over the line in the final few hours. However, it remains to be seen whether or not that will be the case with other potential signings.

The ex-Bournemouth boss will also be excited by this news because of the quality of player the club are on the verge of bringing in. Guimaraes has averaged a sublime SofaScore rating of 7.3 in Ligue 1, making 3.6 tackles and interceptions along with 1.8 key passes per game.

This highlights how much of an impact he can have at both ends of the pitch at the top level. The Brazilian can break up the play and win the ball back for his team whilst also having the quality to step forward and play brilliant passes to create chances for his teammates, which is why Howe will be buzzing to have him as part of his squad moving forward.

Zapata was ‘very’ interested in West Ham

As per 90min reporters Toby Cudworth and Graeme Bailey, yet another attacker was ‘very’ interested in joining West Ham last month, as an update emerged involving Atalanta striker Duvan Zapata.

The Lowdown: Attackers wanted West Ham…

Throughout January, there were varying reports of attackers wanting to link up with David Moyes in east London. Indeed, Sky Sports first claimed that prolific Flamengo striker Gabriel Barbosa was keen on a move to England as the Hammers entered talks over his signature.

Meanwhile, later in the month, reliable club insiders ExWHUemployee and Claret & Hugh both claimed that Manchester United playmaker Jesse Lingard preferred West Ham over other suitors like Newcastle.

In another update, 90min reporters Cudworth and Bailey claim they weren’t the only forwards who fancied a move to the London Stadium.

The Latest: Zapata was ‘very’ interested…

According to their information, Serie A star Zapata was also ‘very interested in joining’ amid West Ham’s 11th-hour bid to sign the player.

However, despite his eagerness, the Irons and recruitment chief Rob Newman couldn’t complete his signing in time, even despite submitting a deal sheet to the Premier League.

The Verdict: Blow…

The Colombia international would’ve been a brilliant signing for Moyes, especially going by his nine goals and five assists over 16 appearances in the Italian top flight this season.

Also, Zapata’s physical presence would’ve been suited to England, with the 6 foot 2 powerhouse branded a ‘beast’ and ‘so big’ by his former Atalanta teammate Papu Gomez (Goal).

Alas, West Ham’s long, drawn-out search for a centre-forward looks set to continue into the summer transfer window.

Rangers could finally axe lightweight

Rangers continued their fantastic start to life under Gio van Bronckhorst as they won in their Scottish Cup outing on Friday night.

They beat Stirling Albion 4-0 and have now won nine of their 11 games under the Dutchman’s management and remain unbeaten in all competitions so far since his arrival after the 3-1 defeat to Hibernian in the League Cup.

One player who was handed a big chance to impress against the League Two outfit was former Manchester City forward Brandon Barker and he failed to grasp his opportunity.

Finally axe

Van Bronckhorst could finally axe Barker and sell him this window if he is able to secure a deal to sign Kiril Despodov from Ludogorets in the coming days.

The Gers are reportedly interested in a move for the Bulgaria international and his arrival could pave the way for the club to move on one of their current duds. He plays in the same position as Barker and that could allow the Dutch head coach and Ross Wilson to sanction an exit for the Englishman, who has not been good enough on the pitch.

Former Gers man Alex Rae criticised the attacker for his display against Stirling Albion and questioned his future at Ibrox, saying:

“I think you look at Brandon Barker, I thought Barker was really poor. I think he’s probably played his last game for the football club.

“You are looking at a guy who has hardly featured and on the performance last night, I don’t think he’s done enough.”

He also played ten times in the Premiership last term and lost a whopping 67% of his duels, whilst providing two goals and zero assists. This, along with his performance in the cup last week, shows that the lightweight is not up to the standard required to be a regular at Ibrox.

Despodov, meanwhile, has provided 15 goals and 25 assists in all competitions since the start of last season for Ludogorets. Whilst it is impossible to gauge the difference in qualities between the leagues, it does show that he is a player in form and full of confidence with the potential to come in and make a big impact in the final third for the Gers.

The £2.8m-rated playmaker could, therefore, come in to bolster the squad and open up room for Barker to be shipped out on a permanent basis. All parties involved must now work to complete these transfers before the window slams shut.
