West Ham interested in Filip Kostic

West Ham United are interested in a deal to bring Filip Kostic to the London Stadium in the January transfer window.

What’s the talk?

That’s according to a report by Italian media outlet Calciomercato, who claim that David Moyes’ side have joined the likes of Inter Milan, Lazio, AFC Fiorentina, Atletico Madrid, Sevilla and Arsenal in the race for the Eintracht Frankfurt midfielder this month.

A further report by Italian publication Tuttosport claimed that the Bundesliga side would not be willing to listen to offers below €10m (£8.5m) for the Serbia international in January, although Calciomercato suggest that Frankfurt are unlikely to want to part with the 29-year-old in the winter market.

West Ham’s next Payet

Considering just how impressive Kostic has been in Germany so far this season, it is easy to see why Moyes would be keen on a deal to bring the versatile midfielder to the London Stadium this month.

Indeed, over his 17 Bundesliga outings in the current campaign, the £18m-rated man has been in astonishing form, having bagged three goals, registered seven assists and created a remarkable 14 big chances for his teammates – with no other player in the German top-flight having created more – as well as making an average of 2.8 key passes and taking 1.9 shots per game.

These returns have seen the £43k-per-week midfielder – who can also play further forward on the left-wing – average an extraordinary SofaScore match rating of 7.36, not only ranking him as Frankfurt’s best performer in the division, but also as the ninth-best player in the league as a whole.

And, while it is true that Pablo Fornals has been in improved form on the left-hand side of the West Ham attack so far this season – scoring four goals, registering two assists and creating four big chances over his 18 Premier League appearances – the Spain international’s returns still pale in comparison to those of Dimitri Payet back in 2015/16.

Indeed, over the France international’s 30 Premier League outings that season, the winger scored nine goals, provided 12 assists and created 16 big chances for his teammates, returns which saw the now-34-year-old earn an out of this world seasonal SofaScore match rating of 7.68.

As such, should Moyes and Rob Newman be able to seal a deal for Kostic this winter, and the player who Kevin Trapp dubbed a “monster” goes on to continue his remarkable form for Frankfurt at the London Stadium, the 58-year-old manager could well have the club’s next Payet on their hands – something that is undoubtedly an incredibly exciting prospect for everyone involved with the Hammers.

'We want to play hard cricket again' – Taibu

Tatenda Taibu: “We really want to stamp our authority now and start performing as expected.”•Bangladesh Cricket Board

Zimbabwe may be underdogs for the upcoming limited-overs series against West Indies, but batsman Tatenda Taibu has said the team will be aiming to “play hard cricket” and win games.”We really want to start playing hard cricket again,” he said. “We really want to stamp our authority now and start performing as expected.”Zimbabwe announced in 2006 that they were temporarily withdrawing from Tests, having last played India at home in September 2005. They continue to play ODIs and Twenty20s but languish at the bottom of the world rankings.Zimbabwe will begin their tour with a warm-up game against a WICB Vice Chancellor’s XI but will be without wicketkeeper Brendan Taylor, who did not arrive with the squad because his transit visa for London was misplaced. “He should be able to travel 48 hours later and join up with us on Thursday night,” coach Walter Chawaguta said. However, Taibu said this team had a good mixture of youth and experience in the 15-man squad and would perform well. He said Stuart Matsikenyeri and captain and offspinner Prosper Utseya, who have played 105 and 101 ODIs respectively, would be key to their fortunes.”They’ve [Matsikenyeri and Utseya] played a lot of games,” Taibu said. “They’ve got a lot of maturity at the moment. So we’re looking to play a lot of good cricket. I’ve been here before, so it’s great to play cricket here again.”There are a lot of times the guys have said there is a lot of talent in Zimbabwe, but we really have to put it to show now. It’s not (just) about the talent, we really have to join the two (talent and maturity) and play good cricket.”Zimbabwe take on West Indies in a Twenty20 in Port of Spain on Sunday and Taibu said the format wasn’t only about explosive cricket. “It’s about mental cricket, reacting to situations. It will be exciting. Twenty20 will be exciting for the crowd. I’m sure they’re going to come for some good cricket.”Zimbabwe will play five ODIs after the Twenty20 between March 4 and 14.

Chris Gayle, the West Indies captain, has been rested from the 13-man squad for the only Twenty20 international against Zimbabwe in Trinidad on February 28. Denesh Ramdin has been named captain for the match and a West Indies board media release said that Gayle was “expected to be available” for the five-match one-day series that follows.”Chris Gayle went to Australia, and while there, his mother was ill, and he had to come back,” WICB chief Ernest Hilaire said. “We thought, in discussion with him, that he should probably go home for a few days to see his mother, to be with her, then join the team in Guyana.”West Indies have been boosted by the return of four players who were injured for the recent ODI series in Australia, which they lost 0-4. Shivnarine Chanderpaul has recovered from the thumb injury he sustained during the Test leg of the Australia tour, Sulieman Benn’s knee has healed and so has Adrian Barath’s hamstring. Darren Bravo, who suffered a shoulder injury during the Champions League Twenty20 in India last November, has also returned to the squad but his brother, Dwayne, is still out after breaking his thumb while playing for Victoria during the Big Bash.Chanderpaul, who last featured in the Adelaide Test in December, is happy with his recovery from the injury that laid him low. “I am feeling okay. It just needs to be tested at the higher level and see where we are,” he said.Apart from the four injured players returning to the mix, allrounder Dave Bernard jnr and opener Andre Fletcher have also been recalled. They were part of West Indies’ Champions Trophy squad in September 2009 but missed the trip to Australia.Zimbabwe’s tour begins with a 50-over practice match against a University of the West Indies’ Vice-Chancellor’s XI at the Frank Worrell Oval in Trinidad on Friday before the Twenty20 on Sunday.Squad: Denesh Ramdin (capt & wk), Adrian Barath, Sulieman Benn, David Bernard jnr, Darren Bravo, Shivnarine Chanderpaul, Andre Fletcher, Nikita Miller, Kieron Pollard, Ravi Rampaul, Kemar Roach, Darren Sammy, Dwayne Smith.

Multan and Sialkot set up semis clash

A round-up of matches from the fifth day of the RBS one-day competition

Cricinfo staff18-Feb-2010Group AMultan Tigers sealed a place in the semi-finals, cruising to their fourth straight win in the competition, beating Peshawar Panthers comfortably by five wickets in Karachi. Gulzar Sadaf, who smashed 103, and Kashif Naved, with his attacking, unbeaten 73, were the stars, enabling their team to overhaul a challenging target of 251 with almost nines overs to spare. Peshawar, in their innings, had been helped by half-centuries from Haroon Ahmed (67) and Azam Jan (50) but Mohammad Hafeez’s three-for, backed up by two-wicket spells from Kashif Naved and Faisal Elahi restricted them to what turned out to be an inadequate score. Multan will take on Sialkot Stallions, the table-toppers from Group C, in the first semi-final at the Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore on February 21.Karachi Dolphins upstaged Hyderabad Hawks at the National Stadium by 45 runs to finish second in the points table for Group A. As a result, they missed out on a place in the knockout phase while Hyderabad were consigned to the bottom place. Karachi, after opting to bat, were given a solid start by their openers Adnan Baig and Ali Asad, who added 109. They were then boosted by Sheharyar Ghani, who smashed four fours and as many sixes in his 86 but a collapse ensued. Kashif Batti and Lal Kumar shared seven wickets, as Karachi lost seven for 75 though still managing a competitive 275. Hyderabad, despite a determined 109 from opener Aqeel Anjum, faltered in their reply, failing to measure up to Azam Hussain’s 4 for 35 to be bowled out for 230.Group BIn a high-scoring contest at the Gaddafi Stadium, National Bank of Pakistan chased 311 in the final over to qualify for the semi-finals and set up a knockout clash against Sui Northern Gas Pipelines Limited. They beat Karachi Zebras by two wickets in a thrilling game, thanks to Sarmad Bhatti’s aggressive, unbeaten 36-ball 45 which followed contributions of 87 from Salman Butt and 52 from Omer Amin. Karachi would have thought they had enough after Akbar-ur-Rehman scored a 112-ball 126, backed up by important contributions from the middle order, but their bowlers, despite trying hard, were unable to measure up to the NBP onslaught.Khan Research Laboratories prevailed over Habib Bank Limited in a closely-fought encounter in Rawalpindi, winning by 19 runs. They finished second on the points table in Group B, thereby missing out on a place in the semis. Their opponents ended third. KRL, after opting to bat, were aided by important contributions from their top and middle orders. Zahoor Elahi top scored with 60 and was supported by Bazid Khan (39) and Ali Khan (45). However, KRL slipped to 237 all out, losing their last seven wickets for 73 runs as Kamran Hussain and Mohammad Aslam bagged three wickets each. But HBL started poorly in their reply, losing their five for 81 before the lower order, led by Danish Kaneria’s fiery 64, gave them a chance. But Yasir Ali’s three-for and Saeed Anwar jnr’s haul of 3 for 41, which included wickets at the death, stopped HBL short.Though this game was of no consequence for the knockout stage, it proved a thorough entertainer. A blistering 142 from opener Irfan Zaman, backed up by two pivotal lower-order stands involving Mohammad Naeem steered Lahore Eagles to a one-wicket win over Sui Southern Gas Corporation at the Lahore City Cricket Association Ground. Chasing 294, Lahore were tottering at 67 for 4 but Zaman, who smashed 14 fours and five sixes, added 144 for the fifth wicket with Mohammad Saeed (49) to revive the innings. However, the next three wickets fell for just one run, swinging the game SSGC’s way. But there lay another twist, as Naeem batted patiently with the attacking Emmad Ali, who, at No.10, smacked 41 in 28, to put Lahore back in contention before being dismissed. Last man Hasan Dar gave Naeem invaluable company, as the pair added 15 to seal victory with three balls to spare. SSGC’s own innings had been buoyed by a 187-run opening stand between Asif Zakir (87) and Azeem Ghumman (133), but there was little support from the rest. Mohammad Irshad grabbed five wickets to keep the total down to 293, which his batsmen overcame.Group CIt was Faisalabad Wolves who handed Sialkot Stallions their first defeat of the tournament at the Iqbal Stadium. Choosing to bat, Fasialabad were lifted by half-centuries from Shahid Siddique, Zeeshan Asif and Mohammad Salman. Even though Bilawal Bhatti took four wickets, he couldn’t prevent Faisalabad from getting to 287 for 9. While Adeel Malik tried to provide some impetus to the Sialkot next up with a near run-a-ball 70, they were outdone by offspinner Hasan Mahmood’s 3 for 31, and eventually finished on 226 for 9. Sialkot though, still nosed ahead via net run-rate to keep Rawalpindi away from a semi-final spot.Rawalpindi Rams looked to have improved their semi-final chances with a six-wicket win against bottom-placed Abbottabad Rhinos in Sargodha. Batting first, Abbottabad were jolted by left-arm fast bowler Sadaf Hussain’s early strikes. However, a 101-run partnership between Mohammad Kashif (78 not out) and Khalid Usman (47) pushed them to 233 for 9. Even as opener Naved Malik departed for a duck during the chase, eighties from Zahid Mansoor and Babar Naeem strengthened Rawalpindi. The 142-run stand for the second wicket ensured a safe passage to victory, which arrived in the 42nd over.Lahore Lions rose in the standings after defeating Islamabad Leopards by 30 runs at the Diamond Club Ground. There were no standout performers in Lahore’s batting card, but a combined effort meant they finished on a competitive 252. Islamabad captain Raheel Majeed looked in charge during the reply with a quick 73 at the top of the order, but from 123 for 2, things started to go downhill as legspinner Saad Nasim weaved his magic. Nasim finished with 4 for 35 as Islamabad were cleaned up in 47.4 overs.Group DSui Northern Gas Pipelines Limited (SNGPL) entered the semi-finals in style with a 59-run win against Water and Power Development Authority (WAPDA) at the Multan Stadium. Put in by the opposition, SNGPL were led by Misbah-ul-Haq who remained unbeaten on 101 off 102 balls, comprising seven fours and three sixes. Raza Ali Dar and Khurram Shahzad weighed in with half-centuries as SNGPL finished on 294. Opener Jahangir Mirza starred for WAPDA during the chase with a composed 88, but a disciplined bowling effort meant SNGPL kept their unbeaten record intact.Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) who would have been tuned in to proceedings at Multan put in a convincing display against Zarai Tarqiati Bank Limited (ZTBL) at the Bahawalpur Stadium. Fifties from opener Khurram Manzoor and Anwar Ali were the highlights of the PIA innings, as they reached 279 for 9. ZTBL never looked like overhauling the target and Jan Nisar Khan’s five-for resulted in an early end, by the 43rd over, with ZTBL 70 runs short.

Celtic reject Stephen Welsh bid

‘Celtic have knocked back an approach’ from Serie A side Udinese for centre-back Stephen Welsh, according to Sky Sports’ Anthony Joseph.

The lowdown

Welsh came through the youth ranks at Celtic and has now played 41 senior games for The Hoops.

He’s featured nine times in the Scottish Premiership this season, including back-to-back starts prior to the winter break, and eight times in European competition (including qualifiers).

The 21-year-old is thought to earn £3,600 per week and is valued at around £1.3million by Transfermarkt.

The latest

‘It’s understood’ that Udinese approached Celtic over taking Welsh on loan with an option to buy, Joseph reports for Sky,

However, ‘Celtic are keen’ to keep hold of him and they’ve rebuffed the interest.

Joseph points out that Welsh signed a new four-year contract as recently as April 2021.

The verdict

It’s no surprise that Celtic are reluctant to potentially lose Welsh. The Scottish Under-21 international could well establish himself as a key player at Parkhead in the coming years if he continues to improve.

He’s performed reasonably well when called upon this season, averaging a SofaScore rating of 7.1/10 and winning just shy of 60 per cent of his duels overall.

The ‘excellent’ Welsh, hailed as such by pundit Paul John Dykes, will hope that he can earn even more frequent starting opportunities from Ange Postecoglou in the second half of the campaign.

In other news, a fresh update has emerged on an attacking target.

'We are looking to win' – Shakib Al Hasan

Requiring another 348 runs to win with eight wickets in hand, Bangladesh need to bat out, weather permitting, six hours for a draw. However, captain Shakib Al Hasan has said they will go for the win

Shahriar Nafees reflected the worst of the Bangladesh batting•Bangladesh Cricket Board

Requiring another 348 runs to win with eight wickets in hand, Bangladesh need to bat out, weather permitting, six hours for a draw. However, captain Shakib Al Hasan has said they will go for the win. “We are looking to bat all day and we are looking to win,” he said.It might sound over-ambitious, but thinking about winning might help the hosts at least save the Test. At times, batting for a draw can be as difficult, if not more, as trying to win. Whether some of the batsmen have the technical nous and the mindset to save a Test is unsure, and as the cliché goes, playing “positively” might be a better option. It’s something that opener Tamim Iqbal displayed amply, with dollops of common sense. He drove and cut at every opportunity and importantly, left a few deliveries outside off stump. Only once did he have a big swing but even then it wasn’t a wild, mindless, shot. He had seen the slower one from Sreesanth but ended up swinging inside the line.If Tamim stood for everything that was good about the Bangladeshi batting today, Shariar Nafees reflected the worst. It was a nervy innings, full of over-ambitious swipes and there was a sense of desperation and a sense of impending doom to it.There was a man at the deep and he still went for the hook. It would have made sense if he was pulling well, but he wasn’t. He chased deliveries outside off stump and went hard at some of his other shots. It was his comeback game after his ICL exile and perhaps, the pressure showed on him. It was similar to the way he played in the first innings, and Shakib acknowledged it in the end. “He was very shaky in the middle but we are hoping that he scores runs and gains confidence. It’s his comeback from ICL and he is working hard with Jamie Siddons [the coach].”They might find some inspiration in Gautam Gambhir’s thoughts though. “The pitch is very flat. If they [Bangladesh] play positively anything is possible. Let’s see what happens.”
