'We are looking to win' – Shakib Al Hasan

Shahriar Nafees reflected the worst of the Bangladesh batting•Bangladesh Cricket Board

Requiring another 348 runs to win with eight wickets in hand, Bangladesh need to bat out, weather permitting, six hours for a draw. However, captain Shakib Al Hasan has said they will go for the win. “We are looking to bat all day and we are looking to win,” he said.It might sound over-ambitious, but thinking about winning might help the hosts at least save the Test. At times, batting for a draw can be as difficult, if not more, as trying to win. Whether some of the batsmen have the technical nous and the mindset to save a Test is unsure, and as the cliché goes, playing “positively” might be a better option. It’s something that opener Tamim Iqbal displayed amply, with dollops of common sense. He drove and cut at every opportunity and importantly, left a few deliveries outside off stump. Only once did he have a big swing but even then it wasn’t a wild, mindless, shot. He had seen the slower one from Sreesanth but ended up swinging inside the line.If Tamim stood for everything that was good about the Bangladeshi batting today, Shariar Nafees reflected the worst. It was a nervy innings, full of over-ambitious swipes and there was a sense of desperation and a sense of impending doom to it.There was a man at the deep and he still went for the hook. It would have made sense if he was pulling well, but he wasn’t. He chased deliveries outside off stump and went hard at some of his other shots. It was his comeback game after his ICL exile and perhaps, the pressure showed on him. It was similar to the way he played in the first innings, and Shakib acknowledged it in the end. “He was very shaky in the middle but we are hoping that he scores runs and gains confidence. It’s his comeback from ICL and he is working hard with Jamie Siddons [the coach].”They might find some inspiration in Gautam Gambhir’s thoughts though. “The pitch is very flat. If they [Bangladesh] play positively anything is possible. Let’s see what happens.”

Leeds need to pay ‘decent fee’ for Kokcu

Leeds United will need to pay a ‘decent fee’ to Feyenoord if they want to sign exciting midfielder Orkun Kokcu, according to journalist Pete O’Rourke.

The Lowdown: Leeds keen on Kokcu move

The Whites may be eyeing up new signings in the January transfer window, in order to tackle what has been a disappointing start to the season due largely to injuries ripping through a thin squad.

Kokcu is one player who has been linked with a switch to Elland Road this year, having caught the eye for Feyenoord and emerged as arguably one of the most exciting young midfielders in the Netherlands.

The 20-year-old has been compared to Germany World Cup winner Mesut Ozil in terms of playing style and has backed that up by registering six Eredivisie assists this season.

[freshpress-quiz id=“383507″]

The Latest: Journalist makes key claim

Speaking to Give Me Sport, O’Rourke made it clear that Kokcu was unlikely to come in on the cheap, should Leeds make a move for him:

“The boy at Feyenoord, I think he might cost a decent fee.”

Reports in the Netherlands, via TEAMtalk, believe Victor Orta and co will face competition from Sevilla and Roma.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/latest-leeds-united-news-29/” title=”Latest Leeds United news!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

The Verdict: Hugely talented prospect

Leeds are badly in need of a creative spark in midfield, with only 18 goals scored in as many league games in 2021/22 to date.

While Kokcu’s aforementioned assist-making quality stands out – he has 19 in total for Feyenoord – Patrick Bamford (two) is the only Leeds player with more than one in the league this season.

Not only would Kokcu come in as a long-term prospect with a high ceiling but he could also make an immediate difference, taking some of the creative pressure off the likes of Raphinha and Bamford and giving Marcelo Bielsa an extra attacking dimension.

In other news, one Leeds player could be out of action for a long period. Find out who it is here.

Scorecard
Chandrasekar Ganapathy and L Balaji put in superb performances with the ball as table-toppers Tamil Nadu stormed to a win against Himachal Pradesh in Dharamsala. With nine wickets between them, they helped Tamil Nadu cement their position at the top of the points table. Resuming on 199 for 5, the visitors were boosted by Ravichandran Ashwin’s fluent fifty and an unbeaten 44 from Ganapathy. They were bowled out in the 25th over of the day, not before setting HP a target of 247. Ganapathy had the top order in tatters, accounting for five of the top seven batsmen. Balaji proved to be the perfect foil picking up four wickets, as HP failed to hold on to first-innings points. Vikramjeet Malik was their top scorer with 45, but the day well and truly belonged to Ganapathy.
Scorecard
Gujarat slipped further down the points table with an innings defeat against Punjab in Mohali. They were staring down the barrel at 227 for 7 yesterday, and the Punjab bowlers wasted no time, taking just under 19 overs to wrap up proceedings. There was to be no fight from Rujul Bhatt, who added just two to his overnight score of 93. Manpreet Gony ended as Punjab’s most successful bowler with four wickets – a total of eight in the match – while Harmeet Singh finished with three. With the defeat, Gujarat fell to fourth position, handing the No. 3 spot to Punjab.
Scorecard
Railways would have to thank Marripuri Suresh and captain Murali Kartik for helping them avoid defeat against Mumbai at the Karnail Singh Stadium in Delhi. Beginning on 174 for 7, with a slender lead of 77, Railways were lifted by Suresh’s patient fifty. The overnight partnership with Karan Sharma finally ended on 81, but Suresh combined with Kartik to add another 83 for the ninth wicket. Suresh remained unbeaten, having struck 11 boundaries, as the innings came to an end in the 49th over of the day. The target of 213 could have tempted Mumbai to go on the offensive, but they chose to be content with first-innings points, as the openers put on an unbeaten stand of 69.
Scorecard
Anirudh Singh hit a combative half-century to carve out a thrilling draw for the home team after left-arm spinner Dhiraj Singh had nearly pulled off a sensational win for Orissa in Hyderabad. Chasing an improbable 321 for win, Hyderabad were on the brink after being reduced to 191 for 9, but Anirudh held out for 43 balls along No. 11 Lalith Mohan. Earlier today, resuming at 159 for 4, Orissa declared their second innings in the 24th over of the day, setting Hyderabad a stiff 321 for victory. Basanth Mohanty and Alok Chandra Sahoo shared four top-order wickets as Orissa pushed for the win. Dhiraj polished off the middle and lower order with a four-wicket burst to draw them closer. Orissa though, had the consolation of three points, courtesy their first innings lead, while Hyderabad managed one.

Abhimanyu Mithun and R Vinay Kumar shared the spoils for the second time as Karnataka duly completed an innings victory over Maharashtra at the Poona Club Ground. Resuming on 254 for 5, Maharashtra’s hopes lay entirely with overnight centurion Ankit Bawne. He held fort to add 40 along with Ganesh Gaikwad, before Sreesanth Aravind had him caught by Robin Uthappa. The end came about quickly after that, with Vinay Kumar adding two wickets to take his match tally to eight. Mithun, who wrecked the Maharashtra top order yesterday, picked up one more today to finish with seven in the match. Karnataka took six points from the win, opening up a five-point gap at the top of the table.
Scorecard
Virat Kohli’s fighting century notwithstanding, Delhi surrendered tamely by an innings and 22 runs to Uttar Pradesh in Lucknow. Delhi’s hopes of salvaging a point from this game lay with the overnight pair of Kohli and Puneet Bisht. They did try their best, adding a further 104 to the overnight third-wicket stand, before Kohli departed, having hit 22 boundaries. Suresh Raina then got into the act, picking up three wickets with his part-time offspin to hasten the end. Rajat Bhatia made a watchful 56 but ran out of partners as Delhi were badly hampered by Shikar Dhawan’s absence in both innings. The six points helped Uttar Pradesh become the new No. 2 on the points table, at the expense of Bengal.
Scorecard
Arindam Das ensured that Saurashtra did not force an innings defeat, though the visitors gained first-innings points at the Eden Gardens. With victory out of the question, Bengal began the day hoping that Arindam and Manoj Tiwary would continue their partnership and challenge Saurashtra’s mammoth first-innings score. However, their hopes were dashed when both batsmen fell early, sparking off a collapse in which Bengal lost eight wickets for 132 runs. Ravindra Jadeja picked up 4 for 71, as Saurashtra enforced the follow-on. Rohan Banerjee’s early loss in the second essay gave the visitors some hope of a win, before Arindam and Deep Dasgupta joined hands for the second time to steady the ship. Both reached fifties before play was called off after 32 overs.

Gambhir keeps Sri Lanka at bay

Sri Lanka gave themselves a minimum of 134 overs and an ample cushion of runs to try and register their first Test win in India, but the Ahmedabad pitch got deader and deader every passing minute

Sri Lanka gave themselves a minimum of 135 overs and an ample cushion of runs to try and register their first Test win in India, but the Ahmedabad pitch got deader and deader with every passing minute. Gautam Gambhir got into long-innings mode, reminiscent of his match-saving effort in Napier earlier this year, but Chanaka Welegedara brought Sri Lanka right back with Rahul Dravid’s wicket 15 minutes before stumps.Sri Lanka seemed a little unsettled by a charmed innings from Virender Sehwag who survived his own ambitious mindset to score an aggressive half-century. The Sri Lankan fast bowlers failed to replicate the swing they got in the first innings, and apart from a few moments of indiscretion from Sehwag, it seemed they would spend the day without a wicket.Sehwag escaped three chances before his eventual dismissal in the final session. In the first over he edged a no-ball, in the second another edge flew between wicketkeeper and first slip. He went on to take a suicidal run off a back-foot punch straight to mid-on, and then cut and edge past slip in the last over before tea. For the while Sehwag stayed in the middle, India hardly resembled a side trying to save the match, scoring at five an over, but it did work in India’s favour. Kumar Sangakkara made the same mistake as MS Dhoni and set defensive fields too soon. Twenty-seven singles came in the 17 overs that Sehwag batted, and none of the bowlers could settle into any rhythm. In between, for a brief while approaching tea, Sehwag did tighten his game: he left balls outside off, defended with soft hands, looked to run singles and rotate strike. In other words, he started to play more like Gambhir, who resisted from playing too far outside off stump, kept the big shots out, and drove only when close to the pitch of the ball.Rangana Herath got Sehwag’s wicket to a slog-sweep, but both he and Muttiah Muralitharan failed to trouble Gambhir and Dravid. The ball turned, but slowly. Both Gambhir and Dravid looked to play as late as possible. Even if they did play back to a fullish delivery, there was enough time to recover. Every now and then, Gambhir would step out and drive from out of the rough, but wouldn’t give the ball any time to spin.During 15 overs of spin, they added 41, without giving any of the close-in fielders a chance. Sangakkara brought back to Dammika Prasad and Welegedera. Prasad beat Gambhir with late movement right away, and five overs later Dravid too poked outside off. Just before stumps Sri Lanka got lucky when Welegedera got Dravid with a late swinging delivery from round the stumps. The ball seemed to be missing leg.Nightwatchman Amit Mishra and Gambhir saw out the remaining 15 overs, without incident. The first half of the day, too, was without incident. India started by waiting, nay hoping, for a declaration from Sri Lanka, but the Jayawardenes accumulated ruthlessly, scoring at close to four an over, almost making sure Sri Lanka would not have to bat again. Along the way Prasanna went past 150 – his second Test century – Sri Lanka registered the highest total in India, Mahela reached 250 in the innings and 9000 Test runs, and their 351-run partnership was a new world record for sixth wicket.India took the new ball as soon as it was due but the batsmen weren’t troubled. Without taking risks, they kept getting boundaries, as the bowlers again failed to hit the same areas consistently. Zaheer Khan bowled off a shorter run, Ishant Sharma’s pace wasn’t up there – an edge that he induced when Prasanna was on 99 died on the keeper – and although the field setting suggested India wanted to stop the singles, the boundaries made up for it.The game stayed on auto-pilot until the declaration came 11.4 overs into the second session. India had spent more than a day without a wicket, and looked it. The Jayawardenes didn’t have to resort to frenetic hitting to go past their milestones. Mahela’s innings – although rarely challenged by India once he got in on the second evening – stood out for how he maintained focus and didn’t make an outright mistake until he finally missed an attempt at a big shot against Amit Mishra, who toiled for 58 overs for that lone success. A double-century came for Mishra, while Harbhajan fell just short, going for 189 in his 48.4 overs. India, while scoring 426 in their first innings, hit 59 fours and two sixes; Sri Lanka scored 71 fours and two sixes in 760. The statistic showed the difference in mindset of both teams when they came out to field.

Everton linked with Neto transfer

With 15 games played so far in the Premier League this season, Everton have a rather mixed bag of results with five wins, three draws and seven defeats.

In those games, the Toffees have conceded 25 goals, leaving only Watford, Newcastle United and Norwich City having let in more this season.

Taking this into account, it seems as though the Merseyside club could have the chance to sign someone in the upcoming January transfer window to help stem the worrying concession of so many goals.

What’s the news?

In a recent report from Sport (via Sport Witness), Spanish club Barcelona are considering letting Neto leave in January, with the goalkeeper weighing up the possibility of joining Everton.

With a total of 258 appearances under his belt throughout his career at clubs such as Fiorentina, Juventus, Valencia and Athletico Paranaense as well as Barcelona, the 32-year-old has kept 91 clean sheets in those games.

Even though Neto has a lot of top-level experience, if he does join Everton in January and potentially supplant first-choice goalkeeper Jordan Pickford, this could possibly cause more upset in the squad in the same way that there has apparently been rancour between Rafa Benitez and Everton full-back Lucas Digne, should the England number one react badly to potentially being dropped.

In addition, with Everton already having Asmir Begovic and Andy Lonergan in their squad as backup options to Pickford, it’s not as if they are in any great need to add another shot-stopper to their ranks at the moment.

Taking all of this into account, whether or not Neto – who has previously been described as “brilliant” by his former Valencia manager Marcelino – wants to join Everton, it may not be worth the Merseyside club adding him to their wage bill if he isn’t going to play regularly or could risk further discontent in the squad if he replaces Pickford and duly puts his noise out of joint.

Moving forward, with Digne potentially leaving Goodison Park in January as a result of his apparent falling out with Benitez, and centre-back Yerry Mina having struggled with injuries this season, perhaps the club should be looking at signing some defenders in January rather than another goalkeeper if they want to tighten up at the back.
