Alastair Cook praised England’s character after they produced one of their finest Test victories in recent memory to level the series against India with a 10-wicket success in Mumbai.The win was all the more remarkable for coming off the back of the nine-wicket hammering they suffered in Ahmedabad last week when the pre-series predictions of England struggling to take wickets and battling against India’s spinners came true. However, they have turned their fortunes around, overcoming the home side before lunch on the fourth day, to keep alive their chance of a first series victory in India since 1985.”It was a tough week up in Ahmedabad and the character we have shown in the last three days has been fantastic,” Cook said at the presentation. “I just can’t fault the effort from the lads and the performance they have put in.”England also won the Test the hard way having lost the toss on a pitch seemingly tailor-made for India’s spinners, yet they were comprehensively outbowled by Monty Panesar and Graeme Swann who combined for 19 wickets in the match with Panesar claiming a career-best 11 for 210.When India fought their way to 327 on the second morning it was expected to be a very challenging total on a surface already gripping, but Kevin Pietersen produced arguably his finest Test innings, a scintillating 186, to secure a priceless lead of 86.”It was an important toss, but the way we bowled on the first day was fantastic and then the way Kevin took the game away from India – to get an 80-run lead was vital,” Cook said. “It was a fantastic innings and great to watch from the other end. We could almost have got more of a lead in the end. But the way Swanny and Monty bowled in the second innings when the pressure was on, to not let India get away, was fantastic.” When talking about his innings on the third evening, Pietersen was guarded in ranking its significance, well aware that the job was not quite finished for England. With victory completed he was more verbose but was just as quick to praise his team-mates.”Now that we’ve won, probably at the top,” he said of where the innings stands. “Yesterday I said it was a situation where we needed to win the Test match and hundreds feel a lot better when you win. Panesar and Swann were outstanding in the second innings, and Cooky didn’t talk about himself but he’s a magnificent cricketer. He’ll break every England record. We came to Mumbai, trained hard and worked hard. There’s a good united spirit in the dressing room.”For a couple of months at the end of England’s home season that united dressing appeared a long way away but a working relationship has been restored and a matchwinning hundred will keep the process moving the right away.”Thanks to the guys in the dressing room, the management, for sorting everything out,” Pietersen said. “Every day you put on an England jersey is a special day and we are so privileged as England cricketers. Com Jair Ventura, você passou a adotar uma posição diferente, sendo o primeiro homem de combate na marcação e tendo mais liberdade para movimentar na frente. O que mudou para você?
Estou atuando mais centralizado e consigo ter mais liberdade pra armar e chegar na área. Isso me ajuda a participar mais do jogo e facilita na hora de dar um passe mais vertical pra deixar um companheiro bem posicionado pra finalizar.

Mudança de posicionamento não é bem uma novidade para você no Corinthians,pois já atuou de diferentes formas, inclusive em títulos distintos. Nesta fase da carreira, o que significa isso para você?
Tem razão, já mudei bastante a forma de jogar no Corinthians, mas agora acho que eu não conseguiria atuar pelas beiradas pela questão física. Em 2015, por exemplo, eu jogava mais aberto e tinha as funções de armar e cobrir as subidas dos laterais. Hoje, acho que temos jogadores que podem cumprir essa função com mais facilidade.

Em que estágio chega para essa decisão?
Estou me sentindo muito bem fisicamente e com bastante confiança.

Nos outros títulos que você conquistou no Corinthians, a responsabilidade da armação sempre foi dividida com outro meia experiente, Renato Augusto, depois Rodriguinho. Agora, a responsabilidade está mais em você, já que Mateus Vital ainda é jovem no clube. Como encara essa tarefa?
Com muita naturalidade. Graças a Deus, em todos os times que passei consegui contribuir com gols e assistências decisivas e aqui no Corinthians nunca foi diferente. Entrarei em campo com a mesma tranquilidade de sempre e farei de tudo pra ajudar o nosso time a sair com mais um título.

O Corinthians passou quase 4 jogos sem fazer gol e tem tido muita dificuldade para criar jogadas.Como homem de armação, por que isso está acontecendo?
Esse é um dos pontos em que mais temos nos dedicado e já sabemos que precisamos melhorar. Treinamos muito bem nesses últimos dias e espero que a nossa equipe consiga criar boas chances de gols e saia com a vitória e o título.

O que é preciso fazer de diferente para a final?
Sempre quando entramos em campo para defender o Corinthians, nos dedicamos 100%, mas final é aquela coisa diferente. A gente precisa dar um gás a mais, tirar forças de onde não tem pra superar todas as dificuldades e conseguir chegar ao nosso objetivo.

Essa é a decisão mais difícil que já enfrentou pelo Corinthians?
Toda decisão é complicada. Falavam isso quando enfrentamos o Palmeiras neste ano, principalmente depois que perdemos o primeiro jogo por 1 a 0. O Cruzeiro tem um time muito bom, um elenco com vários ótimos jogadores, mas somos o Corinthians e iremos lutar até o último minuto.

O que esse título representaria para você?
Muito. Graças a Deus, conquistei títulos em todos os clubes que defendi e cada taça tem a sua particularidade. A Copa do Brasil é um campeonato que ainda não tive o prazer de ganhar e farei de tudo para conquistar, com todo respeito ao Cruzeiro.

– Não quero jogador acomodado. Quero o atleta sintonizado com o objetivo do clube. Primeiro vem o objetivo da Ponte Preta, depois o objetivo pessoal. Se conseguirmos gerar o maior artilheiro, o maior em assistências, a melhor defesa, nós vamos acontecer. Mas só se atinge com trabalho. Para a fase final do Campeonato, o técnico demostrou felicidade ao comandar a Macaca e tentar buscar o objetivo. Além disso, comentou que atitude é fundamental para que a torcida compareça aos estádios.

– O pensamento sempre tem que ser positivo. Estou feliz de mais uma vez poder comandar a Macaca, ao lado da torcida, que sabemos como ela reage, cobra, mas como também ela joga junto. Falei aos atletas que muitas vezes é a nossa atitude que faz valer o torcedor vir para o nosso lado ou não. Temos que ter esse espírito e cada jogo é uma partida decisiva para nós. Peterson scored 15 runs off four balls in the penultimate over and Ambati Rayudu smacked two sixes to cost Kings XI 27 runs. The pair took Mumbai from a position where victory seemed unlikely, with 32 runs needed of 12 balls, to where it became an obvious conclusion with only five runs to get in the last over.After allowing Kings XI Punjab to post their highest total in IPL 2012 with a bowling effort that was dominated by deliveries that were too short, Mumbai were favourites to win when Rohit Sharma was at the crease, marching to his half-century. Parvinder Awana swung the pendulum back towards Kings XI with a double strike in his final over – the 18th – in which he removed both Sharma and Harbhajan Singh. Peterson and Rayudu had the final say though, as they ravaged the 19th over and prevented Kings XI from completing the home and away double against Mumbai this season.In an innings which mirrored the Kings XI’s, Mumbai started solidly, were held up in the middle and blazed their way through to the end. Sachin Tendulkar and James Franklin, who was moved to open the batting in the previous match and stayed there, built a sturdy foundation. Tendulkar started by sweeping Bhargav Bhatt to long-leg, allowing his touches of finesse to shine through. Franklin clipped Praveen Kumar through midwicket and drove Parvinder Awana over the covers and the pair put on a fuss-free fifty-two run stand.Azhar Mahmood caused some jitters in the Mumbai camp when he had Franklin caught behind off a beautiful delivery that nipped away from him. In his next over, Mahmood accounted for Tendulkar, who got a thin inside edge through to Nitin Saini. Piyush Chawla had Dinesh Karthik caught at short fine leg and Mumbai were no longer in command. It set the stage for Rohit, who had not performed to expectation so far, to step up and he did. He announced his intent by smashing Chawla for a flat six over long-off and helped himself to boundaries off full tosses offered by both Awana and Praveen when they missed their lines.Rohit was guiding Mumbai to victory when he slashed the ball to Mahmood at backward point and the advantage returned to Kings XI. Harbhajan made little contribution as he top-edged without moving his feet to be caught at long-off and Mumbai seemed to need a little miracle to dig themselves out of the hole Awana created.Peterson started the seemingly impossible, switch hitting Chawla twice for four and slog sweeping him for six before Rayudu launched the legspinner for back to back sixes. Mahmood made it tough for Mumbai to score the last five but they did so with a ball to spare to claim a memorable win.Kings XI would have thought they had enough runs at the halfway stage, having scored 88 runs off the last seven overs of their innings. David Hussey and David Miller starred in the last third of the Kings XI innings to give them a competitive total on a slow surface with a fourth-wicket stand that mixed defiance with aggression.Saini and Mandeep Singh built a sturdy foundation for Kings XI with an opening stand of 35 but Kings XI stagnated when Mandeep was dismissed. They scored just 12 runs in four overs after Mandeep returned to the dug out and crawled to the 10-over mark at 56 for 2. In a surprise move, Harbhajan brought Franklin on to bowl and he slowed Kings XI up further. He bowled four good balls upfront, which yielded only four runs, before Shaun Marsh attempted to slice a ball over the off-side but top-edged it to Harbhajan at cover, who took a swirling catch.Miller was the perfect for partner for Hussey and showed aggression from the get-go, when he pulled the second ball he faced, a short one from RP, through midwicket. Having seen short balls get punished, Kieron Pollard offered Hussey two more and was clubbed over midwicket and upper cut over third man.Munaf Patel searched for yorkers but missed his length and dished out full tosses. Miller swiped him over long-on and Hussey did the same, to bring up a well-earned half-century. Clint McKay copied Munaf and got the yorker right on occasion. Still, he did not survive the late assault from Hussey, who steered him third man and made room to hit him over his head for six. Munaf finished the innings having conceded back to back sixes off Miller, who ended unbeaten on 34 off 17 balls.
