They will also play five ODIs at the Harare Sports Club. The Zimbabwe series will prove to a big test for new Kenya coach Eldine Baptiste, the former West Indies allrounder, who took charge three weeks ago.Zimbabwe, who are fielding their ‘A’ team led by former Test captain Tatenda Taibu in the Intercontinental Cup, have a 25-point lead over Kenya in the ODI rankings.

'Voando', Juan ganha afago de Rueda e mira marca histórica pelo Fla

MatériaMais Notícias

No alto dos seus 38 anos, o zagueiro Juan vive um momento especial no Flamengo. Há alguns meses, ele era apenas um reserva não muito utilizado no Rubro-Negro, em meio a concorrência com Rafael Vaz e Rhodolfo. Agora, porém, a história é diferente.

-O importante é sempre o lado coletivo.

AFAGO DO PROFESSOR

Newcastle transfer news on Fofana

Newcastle United are reportedly now eyeing up a transfer move to sign Seko Fofana.

The Lowdown: Fofana breakthrough

Fofana is having somewhat of a breakthrough season at Lens, winning Ligue 1’s Player of the Month Award (POTM) in September, ahead of star names like PSG trio Lionel Messi, Kylian Mbappe and Neymar.

Given his six-foot-one stature, the fact that he plays for Ivory Coast at international level and the position that he plays in, the central midfield player has drawn comparisons to Manchester City and Premier League legend Yaya Toure, who of course won the league three times during his time at the Etihad Stadium.

If Fofana ends up moving to St. James’ Park, he will be hoping to emulate one of the league’s and his country’s best ever players.

The Latest: Fofana eyed

As per Foot Mercato, the North East club ‘continue to observe his performances’, along with Marseille, AC Milan and Atalanta.

However, Lens do not need money at this moment in time, and ‘should politely refuse’ any offers that come in for him in the January transfer window, unless ‘huge’ cash is brought onto the table.

The Verdict: Get him in

Eddie Howe needs players that will work tirelessly for him on the pitch in order for the Tyneside outfit to escape relegation from the top flight down to the Championship.

Fofana is exactly that type of player, given that he has run the fourth-most kilometres out of any player in Ligue 1 so far this season, racking up 143.5km in 13 games (Foot Mercato), which averages out at over 11km per match.

Having been sold by Man City’s Academy earlier on his career, he will also have a point to prove in England, and will no doubt be hungry for success.

Nonetheless, he would certainly be an upgrade on the Magpies’ current options in the middle of the park, scoring more goals and averaging more shots, key passes and dribbles per game than Isaac Hayden, Jonjo Shelvey and Sean Longstaff in their respective domestic leagues so far this season (WhoScored).

Rangers make van Bronckhorst demand

An update has emerged on Gio van Bronckhorst, regarding Rangers’ plans for his potential backroom staff in Glasgow.

What’s the talk?

According to The Times, Rangers are insisting the Dutchman brings in a player experienced in Scottish football to be a part of his coaching staff behind-the-scenes, with Billy Dodds, Barry Ferguson and Neil McCann named as candidates.

The report claims Jan Wouters, his assistant at Feyenoord, is unlikely to follow him to Ibrox, with the aforementioned trio potentially in line to take his place.

Buzzing

Rangers fans will surely be buzzing with this inside insight into Ross Wilson’s plans for the make-up of van Bronckhorst’s backroom team. The Gers chief is seemingly keen to get as much experience in to help the Dutchman as possible, which could allow him to hit the ground running.

Instead of needing an adaptation period, the experience from the likes of Ferguson, McCann and Dodds could mean that he is able to meet the requirements of Scottish football straight away. They will have the games under their belts as coaches and players to know what it is all about, which could be valuable for the 46-year-old.

Ferguson is currently the manager of Alloa Athletic and has taken charge of 20 games to date, with over 100 games in Scottish football as a head coach overall in his career. This is after he played over 200 games for Rangers during his playing career, winning five league titles.

Dodds, however, is managing at a higher level with Inverness in the second tier. He has won 1.70 points per game across 20 matches in charge, having also played for Rangers before becoming a manager.

Interestingly, he took the Inverness job after Neil McCann’s spell as caretaker – where he won 1.50 points per game across 16 matches. McCann, a further ex-Gers player, managed 60 games at Dundee but was only able to pick up an unimpressive 1.12 points per game.

This shows that all three of them have experience as players and coaches in Scottish football and could provide van Bronckhorst with valuable information behind the scenes to help him perform to the best of his abilities at Ibrox, should he take the job.

Therefore, this is a shrewd decision from Wilson and shows that he is working hard to piece together the best set of staff possible to replace Steven Gerrard’s influence following his move to Aston Villa, which is why fans will be delighted by this news.

Race against time for opening day

Groundstaff are working around the clock to get the ground ready for Thursday, but the weather could still be the winner•PA Sport

Several members of Edgbaston’s groundstaff will work on the water-logged outfield through the night, but have privately conceded there is little chance of play on Thursday. Steve Rouse, the head groundsman, appeared to be fighting a losing battle aboard one of the four super-soppers in operation on the playing surface on Wednesday as rain continued to threaten the third Ashes Test. The main problem area is the outfield, which as of Wednesday varied from spongy under foot to submerged. Surface water was evident on large portions of the areas directly beneath the Eric Hollies Stand and the pavilion, and with water tables in Birmingham already high after a wet July, groundstaff all but conceded to Cricinfo that day one of the Test would be washed out.Rouse began work on the Edgbaston playing surface at 5.30am on Wednesday, but could not negate the various downpours throughout the day. Weather forecasts are suggesting the groundstaff could be offered some respite on Thursday and Friday, however with the outfield posing a safety hazard for players in its current, marshy state, staff fear that even a day of sunshine will not save the first day’s play. But they will not give up without a fight. A handful of groundsmen will be held back overnight to work on the ground whenever weather permits, although with Edgbaston considered among the poorer draining Test grounds in the country, optimism was thin on the ground. “You can’t beat the weather,” one remarked.Of some consolation to the Edgbaston staff is that the pitch has reportedly remained dry under the hover-cover. Ricky Ponting remarked that he had been surprised at the lack of moisture in the strip when he inspected it on Tuesday, and groundsmen were confident that, when the covers are finally lifted, the centre square will be in reasonable condition.Rouse declined to comment on the state of the playing surface on Wednesday – “I’ve got my hands full at the moment” – but told Cricinfo the previous day he feared rain would disrupt the third Test. “The weather is looking pretty grim for the next five or six days,” he said. “It’s going to be very hard work by the sounds of it.”Sunny periods have been predicted for the first two days of the Test, with showers forecast for the weekend. The odds of either team forcing a result in the match appear slim at this point, potentially leaving Australia in the unenviable position of entering the final two Tests of the series a game in arrears of England. Both teams were forced to train at Warwickshire’s indoor nets centre on Wednesday, and Ponting stated that his side’s disrupted preparation was posing more of a concern than the form woes of several of his key players. “I’m a bit more worried about the weather more than anything else, to tell you the truth,” Ponting said. “It’s been pretty ordinary the last couple of days and it’s probably hindered our training and preparation a little bit.”

This series hasn’t been Chris Gayle’s finest hour. He turned up 48 hours before the first Test, spent a lot of time complaining about the cold and, to cap it all, said he wouldn’t mind if Test cricket didn’t exist. So, in many respects, he got what he deserved as the Wisden Trophy was surrendered back to England after little more than two months.Ever since his now infamous newspaper interview, Gayle has tried to tone down his comments without ever sounding convincing. His latest attempt came with a smile, but that was probably because he can now play one-day cricket for six weeks.”I’m definitely enjoying the captaincy,” he said. “It has done a lot for me as an individual and I can’t be ungrateful and say it hasn’t. I appreciate it and am happy to lead the West Indies whenever and wherever. We have a good bunch of guys here and it’s a learning process for them. For me I’m still enjoying the cricket and if I’m not it wouldn’t make sense to carry on.”What made Gayle’s comments about Test cricket even more disappointing was that he’d put so much effort into securing the series in the Caribbean. He scored two impressive hundreds, bowled and batted with an injured hamstring, and instilled a determination not seen from a West Indies side for a long time. However, like the economy, it is dangerous to talk about green shoots of recovery when it comes to West Indies cricket.”It’s a disappointing result,” he said. “We have ourselves to blame to be honest, it all started from that first Test where we dropped too many catches when we had England on the run. To play catch-up cricket in these conditions was always going to be difficult. But we were here to do a job and we didn’t do it properly.”I’m disappointed to hand back the trophy after a short period of time. This tour wasn’t in place then it came on board so it was something we had to deal with and it we didn’t go about it properly. We struggled in the conditions and it would have been nice to have bat and ball clicking at the same time which didn’t happen.”An away series during the English early season was always going to present a huge challenge for West Indies but, showing that he had one captaincy skill well honed, Gayle tried to look for the positives and hoped his young players would benefit.”This was a chance for us to come and improve our overseas cricket which didn’t happen, but we should use this as a big experience for us. I learned a lot and I’m sure the other guys gained a lot,” he said. “It’s all new for them and it’s an opportunity for them to be part of this team. It’s never going to be easy for them, but it’s good they get a taste of Test cricket and hopefully they can become better.”At least Gayle can now look forward to plenty of one-day cricket, and West Indies shouldn’t be underestimated in the shorter formats even though England recently won 3-2 in the Caribbean. When West Indies toured in 2007 they lost the Test series 3-0 before bouncing back to share the Twenty20s 1-1 and take the one-dayers 2-1.”We have to put this series behind us and look forward to the ODIs,” Gayle said. “We have the guys to do the job. We are representing West Indies so have to give our best.” It certainly can’t go much worse than the last two weeks.

Paratici and Spurs like Kessie ‘so much’

Taking to Twitter, Italian football reporter Gianluigi Longari has shared news on Tottenham Hotspur and their pursuit of AC Milan star Franck Kessie.

The Lowdown: Spurs tipped to sign Kessie…

It’s safe to say Tottenham have been tipped as one of the major frontrunners to sign the Ivory Coast international with some sources very recently suggesting a move is near completion.

La Gazzetta dello Sport, as shared by Get Italian Football News, first explained earlier this week that Spurs talks to sign him were at a ‘very advanced’ stage as his contract runs down.

Indeed, currently expiring in 2022, Milan are running out of time to tie down Kessie and make any serious money off the club’s interested in their star man.

As such, Spurs are one of the clubs looking to take advantage and snap up the 24-year-old on a January pre-contract for next summer.

That’s where reporter Rudy Galetti comes in, who claimed on social media in mid-week that Fabio Paratici and co have a ‘close agreement’ with Kessie and his entourage over a deal worth €10 million-per-season (£8.5m).

Whilst not exactly backing the closeness of this move from these sources, Longari has shared his own update as he makes a claim involving Spurs’ managing director.

The Latest: Paratici ‘really likes’ Kessie…

According to the reporter, as he shared news on social media, Tottenham are indeed ‘one of the options’ for Kessie and are in with a shot of signing him.

He also says that Paratici personally likes the midfield man ‘so much’, but there are also other clubs who are still in contention.

“Spurs are for sure one of the options on Kessie’s table as Paratici likes him so much,” he explained.

“There are also other options for him as we told here two months ago.”

The Verdict: A must for Spurs!

While this arguably isn’t as eye-catching as the reports from both Galetti and La Gazzetta, Longari’s claim that Spurs are well in contention should still be enough to excite supporters – simply going by Kessie’s calibre alone.

Lauded as a ‘sumptuous’ player by Milan boss Stefano Pioli, Serie A critics like Nicky Bandini have also labelled the 48-cap star ‘extraordinary’ for his performances at the San Siro (ESPN).

Valued at £49.5 million by Transfermarkt, a figure which sums up his obvious quality, snapping up the colossal maestro for nothing would simply be a masterstroke and could provide the perfect amount of steel for Antonio Conte’s new-look Spurs side.

A bit of an all-rounder, the African superstar has flourished in a more advanced role under Pioli at Milan despite being a natural defensive midfield player.

Scoring 13 goals and assisting four others in 36 Italian top flight starts last season, Kessie has continued in that vain over 2021/2022 so far – already getting on the scoresheet twice (WhoScored).

He also comes as an assured and calm presence in the middle of the park, averaging a 90.8% pass accuracy so far this year – a superior number to any Spurs regular with more than one start (WhoScored).

If Paratici is truly such an admirer of Kessie, we believe the Ivorian should be top of his priority list as he aims to strengthen Tottenham’s potential revival under Conte.
