Liverpool receive Otavio encouragement

FC Porto will sell reported Liverpool target Otavio for a ‘fair’ price to address their financial needs, according to Portuguese newspaper A Bola (via Sport Witness).

The lowdown

The report claimed that Liverpool are keen on the Brazilian, who scored three goals and provided eight assists in 24 Liga NOS starts last season. Predominantly deployed as a left midfielder, he averaged 1.4 shots, 1.8 dribbles and 1.7 key passes per match (via WhoScored).

Otavio has a €60m (£51.43m) release clause but that doesn’t necessarily mean he couldn’t be sold for less.

The latest

Porto ‘desperately need’ to make a lucrative sale, especially after Wolves neglected to take up their €20m (£17.14m) option to buy Vitinha at the end of his loan spell as had been anticipated.

As a result, they are willing to let 26-year-old Otavio go if a ‘fair’ offer is received. The player’s agent is quoted as saying that he could be sold ‘if it’s good for Porto and for Otavio’.

The verdict

Liverpool could be shrewd here. According to The Athletic, Porto are keen to turn Marko Grujic’s loan into a permanent transfer, and with the Reds said to be happy to offload the Serbian, perhaps he could be included in the deal.

He is valued at £15m, which could theoretically be subtracted from the standard fee for Otavio.

Although his goal contribution numbers may not be spectacular, Otavio seems like he would be a good, well-rounded addition to the squad, and using the rarely-seen Grujic as leverage to bring down the fee for the Brazilian would appear to be a sensible tactic.

A informação é do jornalista Mauro Cezar Pereira, da ESPN Brasil.

Ainda de acordo com a publicação, Jorge Jesus tem o retorno aguardado para a próxima semana, entre os dias 28 de abril e 1º de maio. Tottenham contacts begin for Damsgaard

According to a report by journalist Ekrem Konur, Tottenham Hotspur and AC Milan now want Denmark sensation Mikkel Damsgaard as ‘official contacts’ begin for the player.

The Lowdown: Tottenham on the market?

It has been reported that Tottenham will implement a sell-to-buy policy before signing any players this summer.

Indeed, the financial toll of coronavirus has made a major impact on Spurs’ transfer kitty with the club unable to gain much-needed matchday revenue through their brand new state of the art stadium.

However, Tottenham do have plans in mind, namely the acquisition of a centre-back or two to bolster what has been a problem area (Alasdair Gold).

Spurs could also target a new striker and new right-back this summer, the latter if Serge Aurier secures a move away from the club (Alasdair Gold).

The Latest: Tottenham now want Damsgaard…

In a twist, Tottenham have their eyes on an attacking midfield player in exciting Denmark sensation Damsgaard.

The 20-year-old has impressed at Euro 2020 so far and starred in their last group game, opening the scoring in an emotional 4-1 victory over Russia

His dipping world class strike from the edge of the area summed up his sky high potential, with the starlet holding no shortage of suitors.

Konur, writing on Twitter, has claimed that both Spurs and Milan now want the player as ‘official contacts’ begin with Sampdoria over his signature.

The Verdict: Promising talent…

TV 2 SPORT commentator Martin Mikkelsen branded him ‘magical‘ earlier this year, with Damsgaard also drawing previous comparisons to Danish footballing icon Michael Laudrup (TUTTOmercatoWEB).

It is no secret, therefore, he is a promising talent with the world at his feet – and we believe Tottenham should pull out all the stops to sign him.

They face stiff competition from Milan but perhaps the pull of the Premier League could swap Damsgaard to pick north London, depending on Sampdoria’s stance of course.

Carl Hooper has said the West Indies have to guard against making wholesale changes just because we’ve lost a Test match

Tony Cozier25-Apr-2002Carl Hooper has said the West Indies have to guard against making wholesale changes just because we’ve lost a Test match. The captain and his fellow selectors must decide by Saturday night, when they pick their squad for the third Test, starting at Kensington today week, whether it is worth extending their decision to bring back opener Stuart Williams and wicket-keeper Junior Murray into the team three years after their previous appearance. With the West Indies behind 1-0 in the series of five Tests after defeat in the second at the Queen’s Park Oval on Tuesday, selectors’ minds could be swayed by performances for the Busta XI in the three-day match against the Indians at St Lucia’s spanking new National Stadium starting tomorrow. It includes two young openers, Daren Ganga and Devon Smith, who are both contenders for Williams’ spot.Ganga, the 22-year-old Trinidadian, gave way to Williams after holding the opening position for seven consecutive Tests in Zimbabwe, Sri Lanka and Sharjah.Devon Smith, the exciting 20-year-old Grenadian left-hander, aggregated 750 runs (average 62.5) for the Windward Islands in seven matches, the most by any batsman in the Busta Cup proper.Williams and Murray regained their spots principally on the strength of their Busta batting form but have done little in the first two Tests to vindicate the selectors’ judgment.Williams, the 32-year-old Leeward Islander from Nevis, amassed 974 in eight Busta matches but scores of 13, 43 and 13 in the two Tests have almost precisely mirrored the moderate average of 24.26 he brought into the series from his previous 28 Tests.Murray, 34, also owed his recall to batting form the Busta in which he scored four hundreds for the Windwards.Out lbw for nought in almost identical fashion in his first two innings, Murray’s tension was evident in his run out for one as the West Indies lower order collapsed to defeat in the second Test.Hooper understandably backed both at media question time following the match.Murray’s run out was a bit unfortunate, he said, but added that he had a really good game behind the stumps. As for Williams, Hooper said: I think in both innings, the time he spent there, he looked good.

Caddick shows his readiness for Test duty on old stamping ground

Andy Caddick demonstrated how much class he has developed as an international front-line bowler on his old stamping ground at Hagley Oval for England in their tour match with Canterbury today

Lynn McConnell07-Mar-2002Andy Caddick demonstrated how much class he has developed as an international front-line bowler on his old stamping ground at Hagley Oval for England in their tour match with Canterbury today.Taking five wickets for 69, his 54th five wicket bag in his first-class career, he bowled England into a dominating position, although for the third innings by local teams in a row, the England attack could not clean up.Canterbury declared at 212/8 after a day of hard graft on a grassy pitch. England were 28 without loss in the nine overs bowled before stumps. But Caddick’s delight must be tempered by growing concern about the lack of incisiveness of this England attack for the forthcoming Test series.Even after Caddick had knocked the top off the Canterbury batting with three wickets for 27, the after-guard could not complete the job and it was only when Caddick returned that more wickets followed. On a seamer-friendly track that has to be of concern. However, it was Caddick’s day out. He finished the innings with 796 first-class wickets, a long way from the 17 through to 19-year-old who used to dream of greater things with the Riccarton Club whose wicket adjoins the main match block at Hagley Oval.”There were good games, good drinking and good nights,” he said.As for today, he was pleased with the way he bowled.”It was coming out all right, but it was difficult because the wind was so blustery.”It was a flat wicket, as the ball got a little older.”I got better as the day went along. I hit my rhythm a little earlier than in Queenstown,” he said. While acknowledging that he, as the experienced bowler in the side, has a lot of responsibility, it was a duty he did not shirk, especially in the absence of Darren Gough.”The onus is on everybody to perform,” he said.”I like being the leader. I do have some weight on my shoulders but there is also weight on the others,” he said. Some of the bowlers were still adjusting out of the One-Day International mode they had been in but he was confident that by the time the first Test started next Wednesday, everybody would be keen to step up for the cause. But for Caddick at least there was evidence of growing readiness for the series, especially after the four and three-wicket bags he took in Queenstown against Otago. He also acknowledged that the Canterbury side which met England today were a good unit, if not quite at full strength. But they did appreciate why a player like Chris Harris has fashioned such an outstanding record at first-class level in New Zealand.Harris was easily the best performed of the Canterbury batsmen, sharing a 106-run fifth wicket stand with Robbie Frew that resurrected the Canterbury innings from 39/4.Frew opened the innings and battled outstandingly in a support role while Harris started slowly and built well before launching into the bowling in the latter stages of his innings. He brought up his 50 off 92 balls which included eight boundaries and when dismissed for 82 he had faced 154 balls and hit 12 fours. He went to an edge from Andrew Flintoff’s bowling which flew to Ashley Giles at second slip.Earlier, Frew’s innings was ended when he too, was caught in the slips, by Flintoff from Caddick for 44.There was a chance for lower order batsmen Paul Wiseman and Warren Wisneski to flail away with Wiseman hitting a lovely six on the hook from Flintoff before a run out mix-up saw Wisneski depart just as the declaration was made.Michael Vaughan and Mark Butcher safely negotiated their way to stumps with no real problems.

Man City: United eyeing Ake

A major update has emerged on Manchester City centre-back Nathan Ake, regarding interest from one of the club’s Premier League rivals.

What’s the talk?

According to The Sun, Manchester United are weighing up a potential swoop for City centre-back Nathan Ake this summer. United want to add a centre-back to their squad this summer and they are keeping a close eye on Ake’s situation at City.

However, he is not their only target in that position. United are also considering Real Madrid and France centre-back Raphael Varane and Villarreal and Spain’s Pau Torres alongside Ake.

Last month, former Premier League midfielder Dean Windass suggested that Ake will leave Manchester City this summer as he is not “good enough” for Pep Guardiola’s side. Windass said that he could move to City’s Premier League rivals Tottenham in search of more game time. He told Transfer Tavern:

“I don’t think he’ll stay at City because I don’t think he’s good enough to play for them in my opinion but also, I can’t see him going back to Bournemouth.

“He’s an athlete, he looks easy on the eye as he’s good on the ball, a threat from set-pieces and he’s quick. So I think that would be a good fit and the alarm bells would start ringing for him if he knew Tottenham wanted to sign him. That would be a massive, massive club for him to go to.”

TIME’S UP

Despite only joining City last summer, the time is already up for Ake at The Etihad. Txiki Begiristain must now ruthlessly axe him in the coming weeks/months even if it means selling him to one of their Premier League competitors in the form of Manchester United. It could end up being a masterclass from Txiki if he manages to cash in on Ake and send the underperforming Dutchman to United, as it could weaken their side and improve City’s of finishing above them again all in one deal.

Ake was dreadful for Manchester City in the Premier League. He averaged a dismal WhoScored rating of 6.57 in 10 appearances in the league, with the club keeping three clean sheets in the matches he featured in. This comes after he signed for City off the back of being relegated from the top-flight with Bournemouth –  who let in 65 goals that campaign, the second-most in the division.

The £92k-per-week flop, therefore, has shown that he is not good enough – as Windass has explained – to play for Manchester City. This could also mean that he might be a poor addition to United’s squad and that he is unlikely to bridge any gap between the two sides. Txiki should sanction Ake’s exit and bring in a higher-quality defender to replace him and send him to United to potentially weaken their side.
