Does Romain Saiss have a future at Wolves?

When Bruno Lage enters Compton and walks around the changing rooms, he will receive a sense of what to expect from this Wolves team.

How they respond to a managerial change will be fascinating to see. After all, Nuno Espirito Santo was in charge of the Old Gold for four years, enjoying enormous success in the Midlands.

On the chalkboard

This could be a summer of mass change for Wolves, who are required to sell players in order to spend on new faces.

Ruben Neves could depart Molineux in a £35m deal, while the future is also uncertain for Adama Traore after his ongoing contract negotiations.

Lage could be left without Rui Patricio, who is attracting interest from Roma, who have also been linked with signing Raul Jimenez.

Further changes may be afoot in the defence, with Romain Saiss touted with an exit. Reports from Foot Mercato in France (via Inside Futbol) suggest that Rennes view him as an option in the transfer window.

Get rid

Losing Neves would be a blow but to watch Saiss head for the departure lounge will not be seen as a major negative.

A favourite under Nuno, the Moroccan featured 149 times for the former head coach of Wolves. However, he could well be fortunate to add to his appearances count at Molineux under Lage.

[snack-amp-story url= “https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/read-the-latest-wolves-transfer-news-guedes-toney-shaqiri-neves” title=”Read the latest Wolves transfer news!”]

Saiss was a regular in the team throughout the 2020/21 campaign but delivered some abject displays, letting his former manager down on a regular basis.

One of his worst performances of the campaign came against Aston Villa back in March, when he not only missed a sitter from one yard which “defied the laws of physics” in the words of Tim Spiers, but completed just 70% of his passes.

Sloppiness and an inability to find his man let the defender down for the vast majority of the season. He was run ragged in the 4-0 drubbing against Burnley in April, losing possession on 24 occasions and only registering a pass success rate of 69%. Crucially, he lost the ball for the Clarets’ final goal of the game.

Saiss was also poor during Nuno’s final match in charge of the Old Gold. The £22,000-per-week earner dangled a leg out and gave away a clumsy penalty as they lost to Manchester United.

Such errors plagued the 31-year-old’s season and, with that in mind, he should be heading through the exit door as Lage begins to make his mark on Molineux.

Love surprise for finals bound Bulls

Queensland has revealed a plan to rush star batsman Martin Love back from injury for Friday’s Pura Cup cricket final againstVictoria after today completing its perfect preparation

Michael Crutcher17-Mar-2001Queensland has revealed a plan to rush star batsman Martin Love back from injury for Friday’s Pura Cup cricket final againstVictoria after today completing its perfect preparation.Queensland thrashed New South Wales by nine wickets inside three days at the Gabba, sealing the minor premiership with their sixth outright win from 10 matches. The Bulls cruised to 1-64 in their second innings after reliable wreckers Adam Dale (4-78) and Joe Dawes (2-52) suppressed a New South Wales uprising, bowlingthe visitors out for 267.Love was watching from the stands today after he was ruled out for the season with a broken left thumb, but the prolific domestic runmaker wants to play againstVictoria.Love said he was no longer experiencing pain and he would bat in the nets on Tuesday in a bid to convince selectors he was ready to help the Bulls defend theirchampionship. If Love passes the first hurdle, he must undergo a final fitness test on the eve of the match before he will be rushed back into a batting line-up which has blossomedthis season.”I’m not banking on him to play and personally I think he would be crazy to play … because if he gets another knock he’s back to square one,” Bulls captain StuartLaw said.”But if he says he’s fit and able he will definitely play. If there is a slight doubt he will sit in the dressing room and watch it from there.”It’s up in the air but I would love to have him.”In Love’s absence, the Bulls have uncovered an improved Clinton Perren, who has shown he might prove dangerous to Victoria’s attack on Friday.Perren (13 not out) hit the winning runs today after seeing the Bulls home with consistent opener Jim Maher (113 and 39 not out). The only blemish was the loss of inexperienced batsman Lee Carseldine (12), who provided Blues skipper Stuart MacGill (1-13) with an easy but deserved wicketwhen he was bowled without offering a shot.Earlier today, the Bulls bowlers did their usual job after Graeme Rummans (46), Mark Higgs (37) and Don Nash (35) threatened to give Queensland something tochase. But the Blues were floored by the second new ball, losing their last four wickets in nine overs. It was a brutal end to an encouraging season for NSW, and skipper MacGill said his teammates had shown they would be a force in coming seasons undercoach Steve Rixon.Queensland remains the benchmark this season and Law said he was happy with his team’s preparation for another home final. The Bulls will enter their third consecutive Brisbane decider with convincing outright wins over South Australia and New South Wales.

LFC fans react negatively to AFCON rumour

A number of Liverpool supporters believe that the possibility of the Africa Cup of Nations being cancelled next year could mean no new attacking signings for the Reds this summer.

As things stand, Jurgen Klopp will be well aware that he will lose both Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane midway through next season due to AFCON taking place in Cameroon. That will clearly be a blow and would surely heighten the need for new signings to come in, ensuring Liverpool’s that attack doesn’t fall apart without them to call upon.

According to African Insider on Twitter, though, the tournament is now in serious doubt because of the virus currently affecting the world. Should that happen, it would act as an undoubted boost for the Reds, ensuring that two of their most prized assets remain at Anfield for the for the full campaign.

Allott propels Canterbury to victory with top order demolition

Steve McMorran01-Dec-2000Geoff Allott showed tonight that while his bowling has become a limited resource, something to be rationed, it is the more precious for it as he took 4-23 to propel Canterbury to a four-wicket win over Wellington in a Shell Cup match at the WestpacTrust Stadium.Allott operated in three short spells in the heart of Wellington’s innings, taking the wickets of internationals Chris Nevin and Roger Twose, those of Stephen Mather and Richard Petrie to restrict Wellington to 184 as they batted first after winning the toss.Though Canterbury’s chase for victory seemed leg-weary at times – their middle order perhaps lulled by the diminutive nature of the target – they finally struck off the winning runs with four wickets standing and a handy 10 balls to spare.Allott’s opening spell of five overs was his most destructive and most influential on the game’s outcome. Though his first over cost nine runs and his second six, he returned with vigour to claim Mather for nine, Nevin for 50 and Twose for the eight – all in the space of 15 runs – to set Wellington on a downward spiral. He rested briefly the returned to bowl two consecutive maidens and to snare Petrie’s wicket with a screaming yorker, leaving Wellington 91-6 at the start of the 26th over. By the end of his seventh over, Allott had 4-17 and he ended with an analysis of 4-23 from 10 overs – his best in 25 Cup matches.Wellington’s innings was once again brightest at its beginning, with Nevin imposing a galloping tempo. He was only eight when his opening partner, Richard Jones, was out for 2 but he was 43 when Allott provoked a self-destructive shot from Mather which cost his wicket and had Wellington 58-2.Nevin went on to 50 from 52 balls but couldn’t add to that score before he was out, caught in the gully while driving at Allott, eight balls later in the 16th over. Then Twose followed for eight when only one more run had been added and Wellington were 73-4, their innings showing signs of a rapid decay. There followed wickets at 89, 91, 108 and finally 120 and Wellington had lost sight of any kind of substantial, demanding total. Matthew Bell, their captain, tried to hold together the fraying ends of the innings and found an unusual partner in that enterprise in No 10 Carl Bulfin, who joined hin in a 57 run stand for the ninth wicket.Bulfin didn’t react to Wellington’s batting crisis as he might have done, with circumspection. Instead, he took the attack to Canterbury, hitting four sixes – two in succession from Mark Hastings in the 45th – to reach 44 from only 37 balls before being run out. His defiant stand with Bell occupied only 40 minutes and he provided all but 13 of those runs.Bell ran out of partners – he batted from the 16th till the 49th overs – when Jeetan Patel was out for four with an over and a ball remaining.Canterbury’s chase progressed at a pace very similar to Wellington’s though they were shaken by the loss of three wickets in the first 10 overs and while they had only 50 runs to their name. They were 53-3 after 10 overs, where Wellington had been 48-1, and 71-3 after 15 overs, where Wellington had been 71-2.But their innings meandered through the middle stages as they fell prey to a contagious lack of urgency. Gary Stead faced 43 balls for 26 runs, Chris Harris 82 balls for 39 and Michael Papps 38 balls for 12 runs. They slumped to 138-6.Canterbury’s mindset was understandable – they believed if they kept wickets in hand the runs would come but that policy, like any policy taken to extremes, almost became as reckless as its opposite course. Finally Warren Wisneski and Aaron Redmond saw them to their winning target , achieved when Wisneski struck Mark Jefferson for four from the second ball of the 49th over. They had needed 40 from the last 10 overs and there may have been alarms when Matthew Walker discharged his 10 overs for only 24 runs, bowling three consecutive maidens, between the 18th and 40th overs, but eventually Wellington’s total was shown to be as flimsy as it had first seemed. This did not at its outset seem likely to be a match of milestones, of ringing achievements but it was eventually Allott’s performance, completed before the floodlights took effect, that rose above the commonplace. He may never play again unburdened by injury but he showed tonight that, treated with sense and delicacy, he can still be a potent force.
