In an exclusive interview with Football FanCast, Kevin Phillips, who scored 191 goals during his career, believes Danny Ings would only leave Southampton if he was guaranteed first-team football at another club, like Everton.

Ings saw first-team opportunities limited at Liverpool due to injuries and the Reds signing other players, however, at Southampton he has been the main man and Phillips can’t see why, at Ings’ age, he would want to go and sit on the bench for another team.

The England international has had 51 goal involvements in 92 appearances for Saints, which has seen his reputation return to what it was before he made the switch from Turf Moor to Anfield.

Speaking on why he can’t see Ings leaving to be a back-up and how he’ll be secure in life now, Phillips spoke exclusively to FFC:

“He knows he’s going to play week in and week out at Southampton. So, why would you want to go? I don’t think it’ll be a money thing for him. I think he’ll be very secure in those terms.

“At this stage of his career, he just seems like he wants to play football. Now, for me, I’d be looking at a club and thinking ‘can I go and play week in and week out?’ If I can’t, then why would I want to leave Southampton?

“When you think of top teams that are looking for a striker, maybe a team like Everton where he could challenge Dominic Calvert-Lewin.”

Ings was injury-free for the majority of last season which allowed him to remind people that he is a top striker, with him managing to score 22 goals in 38 Premier League games.

The 28-year old is entering the peak years of his career and has been linked with moves to top clubs including Tottenham Hotspur as they continue to try and find the perfect back-up striker to Harry Kane.

To suggest Albian Ajeti has had a torrid few years would be putting it lightly. The Celtic striker was a hero in Switzerland but he has been nothing short of abject for nearly two years now.

After signing for West Ham from Basel, he played on just 12 occasions and failed to score a solitary goal.

For a forward who had managed 21 strikes in 43 outings during the 2018/19 season, it was rather remarkable that he’d failed so badly.

However, since a £5m move to Parkhead, he has also been pretty dismal. Ajeti initially hit the ground running with five goals in his first ten outings but he has only found the net once since September.

A mini-revival looked as though it may take place towards the back end of Neil Lennon’s tenure. He fielded the Swiss attacker against Kilmarnock and not only did he win a penalty, but he also scored a quite brilliant strike after turning and then firing past the goalkeeper.

Unfortunately, Ajeti hasn’t been able to capitalise on that moment. In fact, he’s not played a single minute of football since John Kennedy was placed in interim charge and then he was left out of the entire matchday squad for the Old Firm derby.

It would appear that the writing is on the wall for Ajeti, a player who Alan Hutton described as “anonymous” a few months ago.

If there was ever a word to describe the 24-year-old’s last few years, it would be that. He has been hung out to dry by a number of managers now and clearly isn’t good enough.

With his absence in mind, the £16k-per-week earner is now surely heading for the exit door. Lennon didn’t give him many opportunities and now he can’t even get in the squad.

We shouldn’t be too surprised though. After being an unused substitute against Aberdeen a few weeks ago, Noel Whelan claimed he could be leaving: “It is damning for Ajeti’s future”, he told Football Insider. “It seems as if he won’t be at the club next year,” Whelan concluded.

Ajeti has unfortunately been attracting criticism all season. Frank McAvennie suggested the striker doesn’t look as though he cares whether he plays after unleashing the following attack:

“I would love to have been in the room with whoever justified paying £5m for him. How can you justify spending £5m on a player like that, a player who strolled about at West Ham and is now doing the same at Celtic?”

Indeed, with just the six Celtic strikes to his name, he has nearly cost the Bhoys £1m per goal. On that evidence, you can certainly see why the hierarchy may look to cash in.

Ralph Hasenhuttl looks to have received a huge boost at Southampton during the international break, with Danny Ings pictured in training after recovering from his recent injury problems.

The former Liverpool man has been sidelined since the 2-0 win against Sheffield United earlier in March, missing the defeats against Manchester City and Brighton in the Premier League, as well as the 3-0 FA Cup win against Bournemouth before the international break.

Although the 28-year-old has failed to match his levels of last season, when he finished as joint-second top scorer in the top-flight with 22 goals, he has still managed nine goals and three assists in 25 appearances in all competitions this season.

His lack of goals in recent months, after an excellent start to the season, have perhaps been a key factor in the Saints’ poor form since the turn of the year, which has seen them dragged into a relegation battle as they sit just seven points clear of 18th-placed Fulham.

However, if Ings can stay fit for the rest of the season, you would imagine that any relegation fears will soon be quashed, as his quality up front should be enough to see Hasenhuttl’s side pick up more than enough points in their remaining fixtures.

Their first game after the international break sees Saints take on Ings’ old sign Burnley at St Mary’s and if the England international can make a goalscoring return to the side, then it will hopefully give his teammates a big confidence boost ahead of their remaining top-flight fixtures.

Although Ings, who reportedly earns £75k per week at Southampton, has been heavily linked with a move away from the South Coast ahead of the summer, he will have arguably have to rediscover his form if he wants to earn a move to a Champions League side, which could also prove to be a factor in Southampton turning their poor form around. He might want to get himself in the shop window.

Therefore, Hasenhuttl will surely be delighted to have Ings back fit and will be hoping that he can be a regular in his side for the rest of the season, as if he can rediscover his goalscoring touch then Southampton will quickly distance themselves from the chasing pack.

Many Wolves fans were not happy with the performance of right-back Ki-Jana Hoever during his side’s 4-1 defeat to Manchester City on Tuesday night.

The Black Country club put up a good fight at the Etihad against the league leaders and were level-pegging with 10 minutes to spare before the floodgates opened.

Hoever came off second best to his opposite number Riyad Mahrez, who made him look foolish on several occasions, although the young defender was often finding himself in situations where he had two Citizens’ attackers to deal with.

Per Sofascore, the 19-year-old lost 10 duels, was dribbled past five times, lost possession 16 times and accumulated a pass success rate of 79%.

Unsurprisingly, supporters were heavily critical towards the youngster with some suggesting that he should be dropped from Nuno Espirito Santo’s side altogether.

A novela envolvendo a renovação do zagueiro Digão teve um final feliz para a torcida tricolor. O atleta teve o vínculo renovado com o Fluminense e assinou contrato em definitivo até o fim de 2022. Aos 31 anos, o jogadortinha vínculo com o Cruzeiro até o meio do ano, mas conseguiu a rescisão amigável.

– É um momento de muita felicidade. Esse é o lugar onde me sinto bem, me sinto em casa. Estou muito feliz em assinar esse contrato com o clube. Espero poder corresponder ao máximo, vou dar minha vida como sempre fiz. Após deixar o Tricolor, passou pelo Al-Hilal-SAU, Al-Sharjah-EAU e Cruzeiro. Retornou ao Tricolor em junho de 2018. Vestindo a camisa do Time de Guerreiros, fez 159 jogos e marcou nove gols.

Apesar de ter recebido propostas de clubes da Arábia Saudita e do México, além de sondagem do Internacional, Digão preferiu permanecer no Tricolor. O zagueiro levou em consideração a sua identificação com o clube. Outro ponto que fez o jogador acertar com o Fluminense foi a confiança na gestão de Mário Bittencourt.

A comissão técnica espera poder contar com Digão o quanto antes e a tendência é de que ele se apresente até sexta-feira. Sem poder treinar no clube, o capitão manteve a forma física por conta própria. O desfecho da negociação aconteceu em boa hora já que o zagueiro Frazan lesionou gravemente o joelho direito e deve ser desfalque por até oito meses.
