Pep Guardiola can end a three-year nightmare at Manchester City by signing David Alaba

Manchester City are one of the European sides reportedly taking an interest in signing Bayern Munich centre-back David Alaba in the summer when his contract expires, and signing him could end Pep Guardiola’s three-year nightmare with Benjamin Mendy.

The Austrian international is set to leave the current Champions League holders in the summer and will be available on a free transfer, with non-German sides able to begin negotiations with the defender from January onwards.

According to Fussball Transfers (via Sport Witness), the Citizens have entered the race to sign Alaba, and could have a bargaining chip up their sleeve in the form of Guardiola, who managed the 28-year-old during his time at Bayern Munich.

Whilst the Bayern Munich man has earned plaudits for his performances at centre-back in recent seasons, the versatile Austrian can also play as a left-back, and as a defensive midfielder, so he would give City a lot of options in their side.

The £58.5 million rated man could play in a similar role to Nathan Ake, filling in as a left-back to give City more defensive security, whilst allowing either Kyle Walker or Joao Cancelo to burst forward on the right-hand side.

Like Ake, Alaba could then potentially drop into a back three alongside two other City centre-backs when they are in possession.

This could therefore bring an end to Benjamin Mendy’s time with the club, as we have already seen the likes of Ake and Cancelo feature ahead of the Frenchman at times this season.

After a barnstorming start to his City career following his arrival in 2017, the former Monaco man has struggled with a plethora of injury issues, that have clearly had an impact on his confidence, as his performances from both an attacking and defensive point of view, have declined since that debut season.

Guardiola is certainly a fan of Alaba, having heavily praised him during his time with Die Roten, saying:

“He’s an unbelievable talent. He can play anywhere. He’s quick, is good in the build-up and is always 100 per cent focused. Without doubt he can be one of the best centre-backs in the world. He’s a huge gift for Bayern.”

Therefore, it seems clear that should Alaba join City in the summer he would be a regular in City’s first-team, potentially as a centre-back or defensive-minded left-back, which could prove to be the final nail in the coffin for Mendy with the Citizens.

And, in other news… Man City man with “incredible quality” is quickly becoming Pep’s most important player, and it’s not KDB

Southampton missed out when failing to sign James Maddison

Southampton were extremely close to signing midfielder James Maddison from Norwich in 2018 before his move to Leicester City and considering his superb performances since then with the Foxes, it seems clear that the Saints massively missed out on him.

According to The Athletic, Maddison was at Staplewood training ground with the Saints having agreed a fee of more than £20 million with Norwich City for his signing, before Leicester City’s representatives swooped in for his signature.

During his time with the King Power Stadium outfit, he has made 96 appearances for the club, contributing 21 goals and 16 assists.

He also made his debut for England back in 2019 but is yet to make another appearance since the 7-0 win against Montenegro in November of that year.

However, it doesn’t seem as if it will be long until he is a regular in Gareth Southgate’s side, when you consider the superb way he has started the season for Leicester this season.

In 14 appearances in the Premier League, Maddison has contributed three goals and two assists, resulting in a very solid average rating of 6.96, whilst he has two goals and one assist in the Europa League, where he has averaged a superb 7.52 rating.

He has also seen his value soar during his time with the Foxes, with Transfermarkt currently valuing the 24-year-old at £49.5 million, suggesting the deal Southampton agreed in 2018 would’ve proved to be a bargain.

Brendan Rodgers was full of praise for the midfielder after his assist in a win against Sheffield United last season, saying:

“There’s not too many players who can play the pass he (Maddison) made for the first goal.

“His touch and his through ball were sensational. Jamie doesn’t even need a touch, it comes right into his path and he does what he does best, it was a wonderful finish.

“Everyone sees the chances he creates. He finds space and can manipulate the ball and create chances for other players.”

Certainly, with Ralph Hasenhuttl’s side having failed to score in their last three fixtures in the Premier League, it could be argued they are missing a creative midfielder of Maddison’s ilk, and therefore they will obviously regret that Leicester were able to steal the march on them for the former Coventry City man back in 2018.

And, in other news… Hasenhuttl will be over the moon with summer decision on 23 y/o who has “really stood out”

Thierry Small: Everton confident of keeping Bayern Munich and Juventus target

Marcel Brands can save Everton millions by nurturing the development of Thierry Small amid glowing praise for the rumoured Bayern Munich and Juventus target.

What’s the word?

Small’s career is just beginning in royal blue, but the route to the top is already on offer after youth boss David Unsworth told the Liverpool Echo that a Premier League future is entirely within the 16-year-old’s reach.

Unsworth has seen Small take leaps and bounds in his development this season, with the teen prodigy now training with the first-team after Carlo Ancelotti lost Lucas Digne for up to three months following surgery on an ankle injury.

It was a decision Ancelotti took despite Small only making his first Under 23s start at the end of November as Everton drew 1-1 at Blackburn Rovers, in the same week Arsenal, Bayern Munich and Juventus are said to have shown an interest in the defender’s services.

Unsworth, though, is confident Small is in the right place and will be sticking around at Finch Farm for many more years to come, after netting his first U23s goal in Monday’s 2-1 win over West Ham United.

“The one thing that we can give Thierry is a clear pathway,” Unsworth said. “He only has to look at Niels Nkounkou. He spent a week with the U23s [after joining in the summer] and then he was in the first-team squad.

“There’s always a clear pathway at Everton for all the youngsters so he’s in no better place to have a career as a Premier League footballer.

“Thierry is a fantastic boy. He’s been in the academy system a while and is an attacking left-back with great pace and power. The pace, the power, how he gets forward – he’s a smashing lad.

“I love working with him, he’s a great boy. He’s very coachable, very approachable, honest and has all the attributes of what I like to see in young Everton players. He has great desire too. I’m delighted with him.”

Heir to Digne’s throne

Everton are blessed with promising young left-backs at present in Small and Nkounkou, but it may well be the former rather than the latter who has rightful possession to the claim of being Digne’s heir at Goodison Park.

Small, who former England defender Danny Mills lauds as a “powerful, athletic left-back”, is in the right place at the right time to leave a positive impression on Ancelotti, and will be using his chance to train with the first-team to learn as much as possible while excelling in the U23s.

Having the wise head of Leighton Baines to learn from will afford Small the perfect opportunity to learn everything there is to being a top-class Premier League full-back, and prove to Ancelotti that he can be called on should the need arise.

Ancelotti has been reluctant to offer Nkounkou the chance to prove himself in the first-team since joining from Olympique de Marseille, having played just 69 minutes in the top-flight despite the Everton coach stating he would feature at Burnley.

Yet Nkounkou did not even make the 18-man squad at Turf Moor in the end, where Fabian Delph opened the action before being replaced by Ben Godfrey who remained in the role for Saturday’s 1-0 win over Chelsea.

Godfrey would now appear to be Ancelotti’s favoured candidate on the left of the defence while without Digne, having fared excellently against Frank Lampard’s Blues as Everton continued to come to terms with losing their £27million-rated French star.

Esse é o lugar onde me sinto bem, me sinto em casa.

Vestindo a camisa do Time de Guerreiros, fez 159 jogos e marcou nove gols.

New Powerplay conditions 'tricky' – Dhoni

MS Dhoni, the India captain, has said that adjusting to the ICC’s revised playing conditions regarding Powerplays will be “tricky” during the ODI series against England

MS Dhoni, the India captain, has said that adjusting to the ICC’s revised playing conditions regarding Powerplays will be “tricky” during the ODI series against England, which begins in Hyderabad on October 14. The changes to the playing conditions took effect on October 1, and India and England will be using them for the first time in this series.Teams will have to start the batting and bowling Powerplays at the beginning of any over between the 16th and the 36th over for a full game. Under the previous playing conditions, teams could begin the Powerplays from the start of the 11th over to the start of the 46th over.”It’s a bit tricky as we have not yet played any match under this new Powerplay,” Dhoni told . “It would certainly need a different approach as the second and third Powerplay will now be taken within the 16th and the 40th over.”Earlier, while chasing, teams would be happy to keep the batting Powerplay for the last five overs. But now we have to make few changes in tactics. It will have different results till we get used to it.”The other major change to the playing conditions is the use of two new balls – one from either end – during an innings. The mandatory change of ball that took place at the end of the 34th over has been done away with. Dhoni said this amendment could reduce the amount of reverse swing because each ball will be only 25-overs-old.”A bit of swing will definitely be there but there may not be as much reverse swing as we expect in the subcontinent,” he said. “Now the reverse swing also depends a lot on the nature of outfield and how you make the ball, but of course legally.”The home ODIs against England are India’s first international matches since the poor summer in England, where they lost the Test series 0-4 and the ODIs 0-3. It was primarily the inability of India’s bowlers to contain that led to the defeats in the ODIs.”During the tour of England, performance of the batsmen was impressive. Here we have a different bowling department and it’s an opportunity for them to do well in home conditions,” Dhoni said. “They have played a lot of IPL but this will be a different ball game.”We have had a few youngsters who did well in England. Also the wickets were very different out there. For us what matters most is good performance in all three departments.”

All communication between on-field and TV umpires during referrals, consultations and DRS player reviews during all the knockout games of the 2015 World Cup will be made available to host broadcaster Star Sports to put on air, the ICC has announced. The ICC held a successful trial of a similar broadcast during the ODI series between Australia and South Africa in November 2014.This World Cup has had some controversial umpiring decisions – the boundary catch that dismissed Zimbabwe’s Sean Williams in their match against Ireland, Chris Jordan’s run out against Bangladesh and also James Anderson’s run out in their match against Australia, has drawn criticism from fans and experts.

Charlton: Addicks fans react as Bowyer joins in training

Charlton take on Middlesbrough this weekend in what is a huge game for both sides at the bottom of the Sky Bet Championship table.

Neither side won last time out, though Boro had a much better time of things compared to the Addicks.

Whilst the men from Teesside were unlucky to not win against Nottingham Forest last night, Charlton were beaten comfortably by Huddersfield in a result that has really hit Addicks fans.

Even so, a raucous Valley could well put things right for the run in and fans will be hoping that the players help them generate such an atmosphere.

They’ll be working hard this week in training, then, and it seems as though Lee Bowyer is getting as hands on as possible with him taking part in yesterday’s session:

The former Leeds midfielder played at the highest level and probably still has a bit in the locker with Addicks fans reacting to it on Twitter.

Let’s take a look at the best of what has been said:

Legspinner Samar Quadri’s six-wicket haul set up Jharkhand’s nine-wicket win against Services in Jamshedpur. Facing a deficit of 157, Services failed to gather any momentum in their second innings, as Quadri collected 6 for 102 to wreck the team’s top and lower order. Yashpal Singh (51) and Saurabh Kumar (65) briefly resisted with a 71-run stand for the eighth wicket, but Services struggled to string together any other meaningful partnership, as they folded for 235 inside 65 overs. It meant that Jharkhand needed just 79 for victory, and despite losing Ishan Khan early, they overhauled that target in 12.1 overs, thanks to an unbroken 66-run partnership between Sumit Kumar (42) and Shiv Gautam (34).
ScorecardAndhra Pradesh secured seven points in their final game of the group stage after beating Goa by an innings and 136 runs in Ongole.Goa could add only 11 runs to their overnight 187 for 8 and were asked to follow on. Still 350 behind, they began their second innings knowing a win was out of question, and it wasn’t long before Andhra seamer D Siva Kumar struck. He removed opener Swapnil Asnodkar in the 13th over when Goa had only 16 runs on the board.Siva Kumar then ran through Goa’s middle order, picking up five wickets and finishing with match figures of 8 for 38. Thereafter, Goa showed little resistance and were bowled out for 214 handing Andhra the win they were after. They ended the group stage with 29 points, but that will not be enough if Himachal Pradesh manage to pick up three or more points against Hyderabad.
Scorecard Hanuma Vihari and Tanmay Agarwal put on a 217-run second-wicket partnership to buoy Hyderabad to 297 for 1 at the end of day three against Himachal Pradesh. At stumps, Vihari and Tanmay were still in the middle with Hyderabad trailing by 214 runs.Replying to HP’s 511, the home team started the day 36 for 0, and lost their first wicket in the 35th over when Vikramjeet Malik had Akshath Reddy caught by Rashmi Parida. That was the only success HP tasted, as Tanmay and Vihari kept their bowlers out for the next 71.2 overs, while scoring at just over three runs an over. Over the course of their partnership, both Vihari and Tanmay brought up their third hundreds of the season. Vihari was the dominant partner, his unbeaten 138 coming off 229 balls with 19 fours and a six, while Tanmay faced 303 balls to end the day batting on 105.
ScorecardAssam ended their third day with a healthy 104-run lead over Kerala in Tellichery. Amit Verma made his 10th first-class century but ran out of partners as Kerala folded for 266 and conceded a 78-run first-innings lead. Left with 10 overs to bat out, Assam ended the day 26 for 0, with openers Pallavkumar Das and Kunal Saikia batting on 15 and 11 respectively.Kerala, 52 for 4 overnight, began the morning steadily as Verma and Sachin Baby extended their partnership to 89. Wickets fell steadily after Baby was run out for 32, with none of the batsmen providing Verma substantial support, but the left-hander fought on and was last out for 142, having struck 19 fours and four sixes in his 263-ball innings. For Assam, seamer Pritam Das picked up four wickets and left-arm spinner Syed Mohammad bagged three including that of Verma.
