Manchester United rock Harry Maguire posts rallying message ahead of midweek clash

Harry Maguire has posted a message to fans after Manchester United’s draw against Liverpool at the weekend. We saw a side of United that we haven’t witnessed for some time now; they were resilient, hardworking, passionate, quick and decisive, and generally looked like they were capable of denting the league leaders with their first defeat of the season. The draw, albeit disappointing after such a solid display, was enough to deny Liverpool from equalling Manchester City’s consecutive Premier League wins record. Small petty victories.Watch Manchester United Live Streams With StreamFootball.tv Below

Maguire, who signed for United at the beginning of the season for a world record fee for a defender, was arguably helped by Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s decision to utilise a three-man defence – the very system that Gareth Southgate favoured during England’s World Cup run in 2018, where the big centre back boosted his global profile and began his journey to stardom.

Despite registering a point against Liverpool, we mustn’t forget that United have won just three games in all competitions. So, with Partizan Belgrade in the Europa League fast approaching, Maguire took to Twitter rally the troops ahead of the chaos that lays in front of them…

Impressive picture from a born leader.

Aston Villa fans are against Alfredo Morelos joining in January

Aston Villa will be looking to pick up just their second win of the Premier League season on Saturday as they head to Carrow Road to face Norwich City.

Dean Smith’s men have found life hard in the top-flight since gaining promotion via the playoffs back in May.

Their one victory came against Everton towards the end of August, though, they have been picking up results in the Carabao Cup after advancing into the fourth round.

A big issue for the west Midlands club has been the conversion of chances as club-record summer signing Wesley Moraes has scored just two goals in seven appearances, meaning central midfielder John McGinn tops the scoring charts with his three.

In light of their slow start, reports have suggested that Smith will have £20m to spend in January to bolster his frontline.

And just this week, Football Insider have linked the club with a move for Rangers forward Alfredo Morelos, who is more known for his feisty temperament rather than his prolific exploits.

The 23-year-old has picked up five red cards in his Ibrox career and this season has seen him net 13 goals in 17 appearances, per Transfermarkt.

Several of the claret and blue faithful have taken to social media following the latest reports.

It’s fair to say they aren’t too keen on the Colombian as he was labelled a ‘loose cannon’ and a ‘liability.’

One supporter even said he wouldn’t touch the striker with a bargepole with another claiming his sort of attitude isn’t needed in the changing room.

Here’s the best of the reaction:

Manchester United are "staring into an abyss," according to Jason Cundy

Manchester United are in trouble. The fact that Thursday night’s miserable goalless draw against AZ Alkmaar felt so utterly normal, as did the following unfounded praise heaped on the hapless players by the equally estranged Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, is a worrying indication of how far the 20-time champions of England have fallen.Success and silverware have been exchanged for mediocrity and money, at Old Trafford. While Ed Woodward announces revenues of almost £630m, the United we have grown to know, and respect, shrivel and squirm in the shadows, shrinking smaller and smaller by the week. But, money, money, money.Watch Manchester United Live Streams With StreamFootball.tv Below

The football is embarrassing to watch at times and results show. United have won just five times in their previous 22 outings and since defeating Paris Saint-Germain have seen the likes of Rochdale, West Ham United, Southampton, Crystal Palace, Cardiff City, Huddersfield Town, Everton, Wolves and Arsenal hammer home their misery.

It’s unsurprising, then, that such damning verdicts are passed on the current state of the club and their place on the footballing ladder. Jason Cundy was the latest pundit to criticise United’s fall from grace…

To put things into context, Everton haven’t been crowned English champions since their reign on dominance in the 1980s that saw them lift the trophy in ’85 and ’87.

Sheffield United’s Oliver Norwood posts on Instagram after international retirement

The snap may have annoyed the Northern Ireland fanbase, but the Sheffield United supporters should feel buoyed by the fact Norwood is enjoying some time off.

He’s been instrumental to the Blades’ good start to the campaign as he’s played every minute in the Premier League so far as the Yorkshire outfit have lost just once in their opening four fixtures.

Norwood will be vital if Chris Wilder’s side are to stay up this term, and seeing him relaxing and recovering rather than battling against Germany will certainly alleviate a number of United supporters’ concerns about keeping him fit for the whole season.

Leeds’ Kiko Casilla has transformed the defence after remarkable turnaround

[ad_pod ]

Casting your mind back to last season’s playoffs presumably won’t be a happy thought for those involved at Leeds, but it’s crucial in telling the tale of Kiko Casilla.

The Spaniard, arguably playing his biggest game for the club yet, made a calamitous mistake.

He came rushing out of his goal before failing to claim the ball and then allowing Derby to score. It summed up the end to Leeds’ season but also his career at Elland Road.

After arriving in west Yorkshire, he found life difficult and achieved an abysmal match rating of 6.30 on average last term according to WhoScored.

This was a man who looked a shadow of someone who had arrived from a club of Real Madrid’s stature. He struggled with the league and ultimately, Leeds came a cropper when it mattered.

In a crucial game against Sheffield United, he was shown a red card as his time at the club became more about the mistakes he made rather than the shots he denied.

On that evidence, was it really a surprise that, come the summer transfer window, a potential move away was on the cards? For a once-calamitous goalkeeper on £40k-a-week, it was not.

If you’re on those wages, you should be expected to perform – especially when you’re the joint-highest earner.

After all, Kalvin Phillips has recently been handed a new deal that matches the Spaniard’s, and the academy graduate is arguably Leeds’ best player – the club themselves wrote of how “integral” he was after rejecting bids in excess of £20m for him.

Casilla, however, was not performing – it could be argued that he was the reason Leeds didn’t go up, after they missed out on the top two by one place and failed to navigate the playoffs.

This summer Marcelo Bielsa had a choice to make. Stick with Kiko Casilla or bring back Bailey Peacock-Farrell.

The Northern Irishman started last season before being ousted at the end of January, and ultimately, he was the one who walked out of the door in the summer.

He now resides at Burnley and Casilla is beginning to show exactly why he was once a Real Madrid player, and indeed why Sevilla were linked with him during the window.

His performance against Barnsley at the weekend was arguably one of his best in a Leeds shirt, certainly this season anyway.

This was a display untypical of the 32-year-old but it demonstrated why he is one of the top earners at Leeds.

He made six saves and parried away the danger once as he looked resolute between the sticks. There was one save in particular that stood out, as he dived to his left to make an excellent stop.

Faith in Casilla, so it would seem, has been entirely vindicated.

This term it’s looked as though he’s become more used to the league, thus enabling a calmer and sturdier defence.

Casilla has only conceded three times in the Championship, keeping four clean sheets. Considering Pontus Jansson left over the summer, this must come as a welcome relief.

He has transformed how Leeds look as a backline and he deserves a huge amount of credit for that, as does Bielsa for trusting in him for so long.

No longer is he proving to be an erratic and misguided figure. Instead, he now looks an experienced professional, and that has rubbed off on Liam Cooper and Ben White.

It’s with the ball at his feet where Leeds’ number 13 has also become a presence.

For someone who lacked a calming nature, Casilla has been assured and there have even been occasions where he’s managed more accurate passes of the ball than any of the opposition’s outfield players.

That’s remarkably happened five times, including against Barnsley last weekend.

Throughout the summer it could have been easy for Bielsa to have a different preference. The once faltering Casilla might have been out the door under another manager but his turnaround has been rather impressive.

Of course, there is still a long way in the season to go but with Leeds top of the league, the goalkeeper has more than earned his pay packet.

Keeping his side in the game against Barnsley proved that confidence is building, and after making clangers last season, Casilla has become a rejuvenated figure.

He may now even become key to promotion.

Newcastle eye double loan deal to kick-start January dealings

[ad_pod ]

Newcastle United are interested in signing Benfica midfielder Andreas Samaris and Monaco left-back Antonio Barreca, according to The Daily Mail.

The Magpies have thus far failed to sign a new player in January, but manager Rafael Benitez is keen to reinforce the club’s squad before the transfer deadline.

What’s the word?

The Magpies are just one place above the relegation zone, two points clear of 18th-placed Cardiff City.

And Benitez is desperate to bring in new blood before the transfer deadline at the end of the week in his side’s bid to avoid relegation, as per The Daily Mail.

According to the aforementioned report, Newcastle have enquired about the availability of Samaris, as they look to strengthen their midfield.

Former Wigan & Fulham man, Jimmy Bullard recently showed that he’s still got it! Check out the video below…

However, they face competition from Portuguese giants Porto, with Samaris in demand, as per The Daily Mail.

A defensive midfielder, the 29-year-old has struggled for minutes thus far this season, playing just three games in the top-flight, per Transfermarkt.

Barreca, meanwhile, has played seven times for Monaco in Ligue 1, but he has been left out of the club’s squad for their last nine French top-flight games, also according to Transfermarkt.

Easy pickings?

Newcastle have already failed with two recent mooted deals, meaning they are still yet to sign a new player this month.

A loan deal for full-back Jordan Lukaku from Lazio fell through, per BBC, while a mooted move for Gelson Martins never even got to the point of negotiations, as Chronicle Live report that he instead wanted to move to AS Monaco, ironically becoming Barreca’s teammate.

Though they face competition for Samaris, bringing in two players before the deadline may placate Benitez, who is reportedly growing frustrated.

The Telegraph claimed last week that Benitez will quit the club at the end of the season if he is not given two signings between now and the end of the window.

It remains to be seen if whether these deals, even if they’re completed, will be enough to keep the former Liverpool boss around.

Sheffield United forward Oli McBurnie’s Scotland comments discussed by Pat Nevin

[ad_pod ]Footballers have to be careful nowadays, they really do.There’s a reason why we see our favourite stars covering up their mouths when they want to whisper something to a teammate or opponent at the end of a game.Words can so easily be misconstrued, and even if you’re talking about what you’re going to have for dinner that night, a player will often find themselves on the back pages of certain outlets accused of threatening to kill X or Y’s dog.Watch Sheffield United Live Streams With StreamFootball.tv Below

Sheffield United forward Oli McBurnie’s recent comments may not have been as innocent as trivially quoting his designated grub for the evening, nor as sinister as calling a hit on an opponent’s pooch, but they weren’t particularly smart either.

For those unaware, the Blades’ £20m record-signing was essentially caught out saying he didn’t particularly want to join up with the Scotland national team, using some very choice words.

McBurnie has since faced criticism, but BBC 5 Live Sport’s Pat Nevin believes the whole thing could be a misunderstanding…

Newcastle interested in Christian Eriksen

Newcastle United are showing interest in former Tottenham midfielder Christian Eriksen, according to The Times (via The Chronicle).

The lowdown

The 29-year-old hasn’t played since he suffered a cardiac arrest during Denmark’s Euro 2020 opener against Finland last June.

In December, Inter Milan terminated his contract by mutual consent, in the knowledge that Eriksen would not be able to play in Serie A because he has an implantable cardioverter-defibrillator fitted. However, he can feature in another league where the rules are different.

The midfielder racked up 226 Premier League appearances during his seven-year stint at Spurs from 2013 to 2020.

The latest

According to The Times, Newcastle are said to be among three Premier League clubs keen on signing Eriksen, alongside Brentford and Leicester City.

Brentford’s interest is the most advanced, with the Bees offering the Dane a contract until the end of the season. Therefore, Newcastle may quickly have to present a rival offer to ensure that they don’t lose out.

The verdict

Eriksen was excellent for Spurs, recording 159 direct goal contributions (69 goals, 90 assists) in his 305 appearances.

His overall career tallies stand at an impressive 114 goals and 158 assists, and his individual accolades include a PFA Team of the Year nod, the Premier League Goal of the Month for April 2018 and a FIFPro World XI nomination. Newcastle fans may also remember that he netted a direct free-kick against them in a 3-1 win for Spurs in 2015.

Given that he hasn’t played in so long and is coming back from such a serious medical episode, this would have to be have regarded as a risky move. On the other hand, he would be arriving on a free transfer and, if Newcastle match Brentford’s proposal, on a short-term contract.

Perhaps it’s worth a go.

In other news, Newcastle are plotting an £18m raid on this Premier League club.

Leeds plotting moves after Aaronson blow

Leeds United are still looking to bolster Marcelo Bielsa’s playing squad before Monday’s transfer deadline despite suffering a blow to top target Brenden Aaronson…

What’s the word?

Indeed, the American midfielder has been subject to intense interest from the Yorkshire giants this January transfer window but RB Salzburg have rebuffed all of their advances so far, including a £15m bid last week.

However, according to reliable Express journalist Ryan Taylor, those at Elland Road are working hard to bring in alternative options.

“We haven’t really heard much on specific names, but from some of the people I’ve spoken to, it seems like there is other stuff going on [than the Aaronson pursuit ]behind the scenes,” he revealed to GIVEMESPORT.

Exciting news

Now, this is surely going to alleviate some of the fears from the Whites’ faithful.

It’s no secret that manager Marcelo Bielsa desperately needs reinforcements to his depleted squad, having had to deal with a major injury crisis at Thorp Arch throughout the season.

Earlier this month, he was left with eight academy prospects on a bench of nine players for a Premier League clash against West Ham United and is still missing several key stars, including skipper Liam Cooper and defensive midfielder Kalvin Phillips.

[snack-amp-story url = “https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/latest-leeds-united-lufc-transfer-rumours-gossip-bielsa-orta-radrizzani-elland-road-updates” title=”Read the latest Leeds news, transfer updates and much, much more!”]

That’s why Leeds have seemingly targeted an engine room addition in Aaronson, a role they have been looking to strengthen for several windows now but with a lack of options available, that has become a priority.

However, they will struggle to convince the Austrian champions into a sale before Monday, leaving that deal likely to happen in the summer instead.

But it still leaves Bielsa in a tricky situation, so it’s got to be hugely encouraging to see this latest update from Taylor, who is usually on the money with Premier League transfers.

United have been linked to other midfield names in recent times, including Derby County gem Jason Knight, Marseille powerhouse Boubacar Kamara and long-time target Nahitan Nandez.

Either way, the fact that Victor Orta and co aren’t resting on their laurels after missing out on Aaronson is hugely exciting news and many supporters should be thrilled.

It could be a busy few days in west Yorkshire.

Palace fans hail Hughes vs Norwich

Many Crystal Palace fans were delighted with Will Hughes’ performance in their Premier League meeting with Norwich.

Palace entered the game in the midst of a tricky run, having one only won one of their seven games since the November international break.

Norwich, meanwhile, were looking to halt a run of four straight defeats that’s left them bottom of the Premier League table.

There were four changes to The Eagles side that lost 3-0 against Tottenham Hotspur on Boxing Day. Wilfried Zaha was suspended, Conor Gallagher dropped out of the matchday squad entirely and Jack Butland and James Tomkins were benched.

Jean-Phillipe Mateta, Jeffrey Schlupp, Vicente Guaita and Marc Guehi replaced them.

Recapping Hughes’ performance vs Norwich

Hughes kept his place in midfield, lining up alongside Kouyate and Schlupp.

It was just his fourth start for Patrick Vieira’s side since his summer move from Watford.

And the 26-year-old shone, earning a superb match rating of 8.1 from SofaScore.

Hughes won a penalty in the early stages, with Odsonne Edouard stepping up to convert.

He also created three chances, made a game-high five tackles and won six out of eight ground duels overall.
