Celtic need to consider Paulo Fonseca again

If there was one word to summarise the last 12 months for Celtic, it would be drama.

Parkhead has witnessed some remarkable events since May 2020, from basking in a ninth league title in a row to enduring hapless protests against the Bhoys ownership.

Then, just when you thought their devastatingly bad season was coming to an end, Eddie Howe kicked the Hoops where it hurts.

For so long it looked as though the 43-year-old was going to be announced as the new Celtic manager. However, due to complications involving his preferred backroom staff, a move for him collapsed on Friday.

The Glaswegian side have moved on quickly, though. They are already in advanced talks with Australian manager Ange Postecoglou, who wants to join the Hoops, and Celtic could announce him at some point next week.

It’s thought that the hierarchy have been tracking Postecoglou for a number of months, but we think they should be focusing on someone else now.

Their failure to get Howe through the door has opened up a wonderful avenue to bring Paulo Fonseca to the club. They’ve already seen Celtic-linked Enzo Maresca head to Parma and they cannot afford to miss out on a third managerial target.

Fonseca is leaving Roma this summer and has reportedly been offered to Dermot Desmond and co.

What they’ve done with that information is unknown but they’d be foolish to pass on the opportunity. After all, the self-professed “brave” manager plays a brand of football for which Celtic should be pining.

His Roma and Shakhtar Donetsk teams were known for playing at breakneck speed, moving the ball around with short passing in an incisive manner.

Considering how much possession Celtic often enjoy, finding a manager who knows how to utilise it in the desired way will be key.

The Bhoys averaged one of the highest possession rates in the whole of Europe this term, amassing 61.9% of the ball. Those are incredibly high numbers but it provides evidence for why Desmond needs to hire a man comfortable at passing the ball around.

Postecoglou’s Yokohama F Marinos average 64.7% of the ball this season but, crucially, Fonseca has the experience of managing in Europe to a successful level. The 48-year-old took Roma to the Europa League semi-finals this year, thriving in an area where Celtic have been off the pace for a while.

They were the dominant force domestically for so long but have struggled to go beyond the group stages of the Champions League or the last 32 of the Europa League.

Therefore, Fonseca could revive their fortunes in this area. At the same time, he would likely introduce more attractive football and a never-say-die attitude, and Desmond should relish the thought of him taking over at Paradise.

Newcastle transfer news on Awoniyi

Newcastle United are reportedly now ‘interested’ in signing Taiwo Awoniyi in the summer.

The Lowdown: Standout season

Awoniyi is enjoying a standout season for Union Berlin, where he has scored 18 goals and made a further four assists in 39 games in total over all competitions so far (Transfermarkt).

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/newcastle-news-5/” title=”Newcastle news!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

He became a record-breaker earlier this week when he became the first Union Berlin player to score 13 times in a single Bundesliga campaign, and football journalist Kevin Hatchard even went as far as to call him ‘outstanding’ after recently netting against Frankfurt.

The Latest: Newcastle interest

As per transfer expert Christian Falk, the St. James’ Park faithful are now ‘interested’ in bringing Awoniyi to the North East, but face competition from fellow Premier League rivals West Ham United and Southampton for his signature.

The striker has a release clause of €20m (£16.7m), which if activated means that the Tynesiders can then talk about a potential move.

The Verdict: Do it

Awoniyi’s market value is on the rise, and so being able to sign him for a mere £16.7m would seem to be a real bargain.

The Nigeria international is just 24 years of age, and so will only get better as he enters his prime.

Nonetheless, given the season that he has had, the competition for his signature is likely to increase in the summer, and so the Magpies need to act fast if they are to bring him to the Toon.

Exclusive: Spurs legend calls for Bale run

Former Tottenham Hotspur captain Graham Roberts has told The Transfer Tavern that interim coach Ryan Mason must give Gareth Bale more chances in the Spurs starting XI.

The Wales international was used sparingly at best by ex-manager Jose Mourinho, who was sacked on Monday.

Indeed, Bale made just six starts under Mourinho in the Premier League, with his seventh of the campaign coming against Southampton on Wednesday.

He was in exceptional form as he came off the bench against West Ham United in February, a game Spurs still lost 2-1, and was then given a run of games, as he started against Burnley, Fulham, Crystal Palace and Arsenal.

He scored four goals in those games, laying on one assist, but he struggled against the Gunners and was substituted after 57 minutes, and has played a mere 10 minutes since.

And Roberts says that he wasn’t given enough of a chance by Mourinho, while hoping that can be rectified between now and the end of the season – starting on Sunday after it was reported that Harry Kane is a doubt having failed to train on Friday.

Speaking exclusively to TT, the former UEFA Cup winner said: “No, give him a chance now. Look what happened when we played West Ham.

“He came on and totally changed the game at half-time and then he played well for the next three or four games. We played Arsenal, everybody was garbage, because of his tactics, and we haven’t seen him since.

“He’s been on that bench again, warming the bench.”

Newcastle interested in Christian Eriksen

Newcastle United are showing interest in former Tottenham midfielder Christian Eriksen, according to The Times (via The Chronicle).

The lowdown

The 29-year-old hasn’t played since he suffered a cardiac arrest during Denmark’s Euro 2020 opener against Finland last June.

In December, Inter Milan terminated his contract by mutual consent, in the knowledge that Eriksen would not be able to play in Serie A because he has an implantable cardioverter-defibrillator fitted. However, he can feature in another league where the rules are different.

The midfielder racked up 226 Premier League appearances during his seven-year stint at Spurs from 2013 to 2020.

The latest

According to The Times, Newcastle are said to be among three Premier League clubs keen on signing Eriksen, alongside Brentford and Leicester City.

Brentford’s interest is the most advanced, with the Bees offering the Dane a contract until the end of the season. Therefore, Newcastle may quickly have to present a rival offer to ensure that they don’t lose out.

The verdict

Eriksen was excellent for Spurs, recording 159 direct goal contributions (69 goals, 90 assists) in his 305 appearances.

His overall career tallies stand at an impressive 114 goals and 158 assists, and his individual accolades include a PFA Team of the Year nod, the Premier League Goal of the Month for April 2018 and a FIFPro World XI nomination. Newcastle fans may also remember that he netted a direct free-kick against them in a 3-1 win for Spurs in 2015.

Given that he hasn’t played in so long and is coming back from such a serious medical episode, this would have to be have regarded as a risky move. On the other hand, he would be arriving on a free transfer and, if Newcastle match Brentford’s proposal, on a short-term contract.

Perhaps it’s worth a go.

In other news, Newcastle are plotting an £18m raid on this Premier League club.

Gers urged to sign Veerman

Scott Calderwood has urged Glasgow Rangers to bring Joey Veerman to Ibrox as soon as possible before his price tag goes up.

The Lowdown: Gers eye Veerman

The Gers have been heavily linked with a move for Dutch ace Veerman during this transfer window, with the 22-year-old currently playing for Heerenveen (Glasgow Live).

Atalanta are also said to be in pursuit, while it has even been reported Hellas Verona had a bid rejected for the midfielder (Sander de Vries).

The Latest: Calderwood urges Gers move

Speaking to The Daily Record, Calderwood, who is currently part of the backroom staff at Den Bosch, has urged the Gers to move for the midfielder before it is too late. He said:

“Joey is a very talented player – very talented.

“I first came across him when I was working for Go Ahead Eagles and he was at his first club Volendam and he immediately stood out even though he was only 16 or 17.

“He made the move to Heerenveen at the right time because when he was playing in the Dutch Championship, it was too easy for him but he wasn’t developing as much as he should have been at that stage.

“But he chose a great club in Heerenveen to move to and he’s done an absolutely great job for them.

“However, he’s now back in a similar kind of situation to when he was at Volendam in that he needs something new to come along so he can take the next step of his development again because you can again see it’s getting too easy.

“But Joey’s technical ability is clear to see. I saw Rangers play against Real Madrid over the weekend and I definitely think he could fit in there.

“He’s not the typical Scottish midfielder who goes from box to box but Joey could thrive under Steven Gerrard and the way his team play.

“His next move is important. He’s ready to become an international player for Holland. If he keeps developing the way he is, his value is only going to go up.

“If you look back to where he’s come from over the last four, five years then you can see his value has shot up.

“Holland have already got some good players in the middle of the pitch but I think if he had been playing for a bigger club he’d have had a call-up by now. Then the money being discussed becomes a lot for any club.”

The Verdict: No waiting around

Calderwood is spot on here with his assessment – the Gers must move soon if they want to capture Veerman. With nine goals and 11 assists in all competitions last term (Transfermarkt), he has already started to show his ability, which is why he is already attracting such interest.

Heerenveen are said to be looking for £8.5m for their asset – already a substantial fee – but if he were to represent the Netherlands, his price would surely go up further.

If Ross Wilson and co fail to capture Veerman this summer, they may have already missed their chance.

In other news, Rangers fans were livid at these comments on Alfredo Morelos.

Man City handed Sander Berge boost

Manchester City’s hopes of signing Sheffield United midfielder Sander Berge this summer look to have been handed a boost after reports suggested that he sees his future away from Bramall Lane and that his release clause has also dropped to £35m, which should surely put Pep Guardiola and his staff on high alert as they consider transfer options ahead of the 2021/22 campaign.

The Norway international was linked with a move to City recently, with Voetbal24 claiming that the 23-year-old is top of Guardiola’s list to replace Fernandinho at the Etihad this summer, with the Brazilian’s future in doubt as his contract is set to expire at the end of the season.

Berge was only signed by the Blades in January 2020 and established himself as a key fixture at Bramall Lane as the South Yorkshire side enjoyed a superb campaign back in the top-flight following their promotion.

However, things have not gone to plan for United or Berge this season, as long-standing manager Chris Wilder was sacked earlier this year with the Blades bottom of the league, and they have since been relegated back to the Championship.

Injuries have certainly played their part in Sheffield United’s demise, with Berge missing a significant portion of the season after requiring surgery, which saw him sidelined between December and March.

As a result, he has managed just 15 appearances in the Premier League, averaging a less than impressive 6.43 rating, which is a stark contrast to the solid 6.81 rating he managed in the second half of the 2019/20 campaign.

This suggests that when he’s fully fit, and perhaps playing in a better team, Berge can still be an excellent player in the Premier League, and given that he is only 23, he still has plenty of time to develop.

Former manager Wilder has previously tipped the youngster for a move to a Champions League club, and was full of praise for him earlier in the season, saying:

“He’s a positive boy with a brilliant attitude, I love him to bits and would love him to stay regardless of what happens.”

Therefore, following the news about Berge’s release clause and the reports suggesting that he wants to leave Sheffield United, City sporting director Txiki Begiristain should definitely work hard on bringing him to the Etihad this summer, as he could prove to be an excellent addition to Guardiola’s squad.

And, in other news… Guardiola could be set for huge boost over “very special” Man City star after major development

Leeds linked with move for Andre Ayew

Leeds United are reportedly interested in signing free agent Andre Ayew in the summer transfer window, as Marcelo Bielsa looks to bolster his squad.

The Lowdown: Ayew set to become a free agent

Following Swansea’s defeat to Brentford in the Championship playoff final, the Ghanaian is set to become a free agent, running down his £83,000-a-week contract at the Liberty Stadium which expires next week, .

Ayew enjoyed an impressive campaign for the Swans, scoring 17 league goals and proving to be one of their most important players as they narrowly missed out on a return to the Premier League.

[freshpress-quiz id=“359346″]

The Latest: Leeds in the race to sign striker

With the 31-year-old now on the lookout for a new club, the Sunderland Echo claimed that Leeds are among a number of teams monitoring his situation.

The striker is thought to be ‘attracting interest’ from the Whites, with Bielsa potentially looking to sign a solid backup to Patrick Bamford.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/latest-leeds-united-news-copy-2/” title=”Latest Leeds United news!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=“none”]

The Verdict: Past his best?

It is a surprise transfer story in some ways, considering that Ayew turns 32 later this year and is arguably beyond the peak years of his career.

That being said, his vast experience in English football could make him a shrewd deputy to Bamford – he has scored 21 Premier League goals – filling in on occasions and potentially proving to be a “big player”, in the words of Swansea manager Steve Cooper.

His possible arrival on a free transfer means he wouldn’t be much of a risk either, so if he failed to shine at Elland Road, it would be no great disaster from a financial perspective.

Arsenal for Everyone – A new must-read Arsenal book

Written by: @Mike_Mmcdonald for gunnerstown.com, 13th Oct 2021.

When I was asked to review ‘Arsenal for Everyone’ I was a little nervous as it’s probably the 7th book I’ve ever read and I’m not 6 years old. I read articles, tweets and such all the time but even after reading The Miracle of Castel Di Sangro (brilliant), I always find myself too energized to sit and read books. I didn’t know how I was going to do this and do it justice.

I opened ‘Arsenal for Everyone’ and sat there for 3 hours getting through 2/3rds before my daughter’s constant text request for Dunkin Donuts got the best of me. I’m not sure you understand the achievement that I feel in sitting still for 3 hours. The book was gripping.

On my way to Dunkin Donuts, I listened to the author, Dave Seager, talking to Arseblog about the book. I couldn’t stop thinking about the contrast to my life problems and those I’d read about and was now hearing Dave and Andrew chat about.

I had an overwhelming feeling of gratefulness.

This aligns with how I’ve been feeling lately. My family and I talk about what we are grateful for on a daily basis around the supper table. I recommend this as it adds true perspective.

So, my first thought about ‘Arsenal for Everyone’ is that it’s not really just a book about Arsenal or football. You could comfortably glean a life changing perspective from it even if you’d never watched football. Although ‘Arsenal for Everyone’ is a book about the stories of multiple disabled Arsenal fans and their ‘Arsenal story,’ it truly is more. So much more. There are so many highlights.

My first observation was that those in the book have similar experiences to me, but their memory is often more vivid as their senses are heightened by their unfortunate lack of having all the senses that I’m blessed with.

I loved the story of Redmond tiptoeing downstairs and checking Ceefax and swapping stickers in the playground. I resonated with Thomas Clements and how he felt when he entered the stadium for the first time yet was taken with how again, his senses are more alert than mine, therefore his memory is more intense. I can still smell the hamburgers on Avenell Rd if I close my eyes and let my mind wander but I’m jealous that Thomas has a keener sense for those onions, but probably also for the police horse deposits too!

At the same time that I could relate to much I read in this book I was captivated by many stories that I can’t relate to.

One in particular where Michael Watkinson describes what it’s like being a deaf fan at the Emirates. “During the game, it gives me goosebumps as there is no sound, yet I feel the vibrations in the stadium from the fans singing, the chanting, the jumping up and down. It is an amazing feeling which is so difficult to understand and is perhaps unexplainable.” Wrap your head around that!

There are so, so many great stories like…

How Wayne Busbridge became addicted to Arsenal, as he was treated like everyone else for one of the first times in his life. He talked about Arsenal fans on the train arguing with him and saying, “Well you wouldn’t know anyway, you’re blind!” That was refreshing to hear that type of banter as 2021 gets too offended as it tiptoes around not hurting feelings. The banter made him feel part of something and we all have similar stories.

Personally, I loved the story of Danny from ‘A Bergkamp Wonderland.’ I enjoyed finding out more about his disability as I have much admiration for what he’s achieved for the fan base.

I was fascinated at how Lyn Clarke grew up as a Spurs fan in a Spurs family but switched to Arsenal talking about the class of ‘The Arsenal.’ Such admiration too for a lady with no balance, diabetes, fibromyalgia, neuropathy and terminal cancer and living in a world where catching Covid would kill her. Puts whatever we deal with into sharp perspective, right? The class that attracted Lyn you will find in so many stories in this book. That Arsenal choose to go above and beyond the Premier League requirements for disabled fans. It made me feel so proud to know that we are still this club.

This is epitomized by the Arsenal Sensory Room which is designed for our autistic fans. A room that makes the game day experience manageable for them as much of it is too overwhelming otherwise. We are a club that spends considerably more money than they will ever take in, inviting only five or six families per game into the sensory room, shows that class and desire to care for a group that others largely ignore. To add to this, I learned that we are the first club to partner with SignVideo to enhance experience for the deaf. All these ‘above and beyond’ features are embodied by this quote….

“Market forces may prevent us always having the best team, but I am in no doubt that we are a club with the best values traditions and class in the country”

There is so much more from the story of kissing Vieira to the rage I felt from the stories of bullying disabled fans. I loved finding out how blind soccer actually works too. Not what I thought.

If you simply want to love your club with a fresh love then you need to buy this book for no other reason than to understand the role of Alun Francis, Arsenal’s Disability Access Officer and the quite unbelievable story of Allan and his personal commentator. We use the word ‘inspiring’ to describe a performance in a game, the time we met a famous person or a movie. It’s not that these moments aren’t inspiring it’s when you stumble across an entire life that inspires, how can you use the same word to describe meeting Emile Smith Rowe after a game as you would use to describe Nicole Evans-Dear and her drive to complete the London Marathon even though it took her 4 days. Would you do that? If you started and were in the level of pain, she was in then realized that the Marathon was officially over, would you continue?  Meeting Smith Rowe is exciting. Nicole Evans-Dear is inspiring.

This book is inspiring because the stories are inspiring. Truly inspiring. The real thing. Dave Seager needs huge credit for this being so well laid out. He also needs credit for taking the time to do this in the first place. A few minutes of spotlight for a group that often get treated as ‘the least of us’ shows his goodness. Liam would be proud because his Dad is a difference maker.

The star however is the people in the stories. This is Dave’s wish. We get one shot at life and spend too much of it complaining about whatever has rubbed us the wrong way. Read ‘Arsenal for Everyone.’ You might be changed. Even for just 30 minutes as you ponder and compare your Arsenal experience to theirs. My guess is you will have a fresh admiration for disabled people and a fresh appreciation for your own life too. How can you not reflect with great admiration at Keryn Seal having accepted being blind yet playing for England 120 times. How can you not be inspired by Nicole Evans Dear whose husband Phil states,” We don’t need easy, just possible, and together we make everything possible “

This book will humble you.

To quote Dave Seager, “In all honesty, at times, it made me feel quite inadequate.”

That’s enough from me. I could honestly wax longer but this is a flavour of an important book. I loved it and feel it is a book that every Arsenal fan can enjoy and any non-Arsenal fan struggling with gratefulness would find inspiration from.

Fulham handed boost in Kean Bryan pursuit

Fulham have been handed a boost in their bid to bring Kean Bryan to Craven Cottage this summer.

What’s the talk?

That’s according to a report by Yorkshire Live, who relayed the comments of Sheffield United manager Slavisa Jokanovic regarding the centre-back’s future at Bramall Lane.

The 52-year-old revealed that the defender is yet to sign a new deal with the Blades, nor has he given any indication that he will be putting pen to paper on the club’s offer, with his previous deal in Sheffield having expired at the end of last month.

It has been reported that Fulham, along with a host of other clubs, are interested in a move for the 24-year-old in the summer transfer window, with the former England U20 international’s indecision over his future appearing to open to door on a potential switch.

Silva will be buzzing

Considering just how impressive Bryan was towards the back end of last season, the fact that the defender appears very much available to sign on a free transfer this summer is sure to have left Marco Silva buzzing.

Indeed, over his 13 Premier League appearances for Sheffield United last term, the £1.8m-rated man helped his side keep two clean sheets, as well as making an average of one interception, 1.5 tackles, 2.7 clearances and winning 4.3 duels per game.

The £3k-per-week centre-back also helped out in an attacking capacity, scoring one goal and creating one big chance for his teammates, as well as making an average of 0.3 key passes per league fixture.

These returns saw the 24-year-old Chris Wilder dubbed a “talented” player earn a seasonal SofaScore match rating of 6.74, ranking him as the Blades’ 10th-best player in the top flight of English football last season.

As such, it would very much appear as if Bryan would make a fantastic addition to Silva’s options in the heart of the Fulham defence in the Cottagers’ upcoming Championship campaign, especially when taking into account the fact he wouldn’t cost Shahid Khan a penny in transfer fees.

In other news: Silva plotting Fulham swoop for “dangerous” £3.06m-rated gem, fans should be buzzing

Wolves eye move for Lille’s Sven Botman

When Wolves hired Bruno Lage, there were eyebrows raised about his capabilities in English football.

Indeed, those who were sceptical are arguably being proven right after consecutive defeats for the Old Gold. Yet, that doesn’t tell the entire story.

What’s the word?

Despite not scoring a goal in the Premier League yet, Wolves have been one of the most free-flowing sides in the top-flight this season.

They’ve accumulated 42 shots in their opening two matches before the floodgates opened in the Carabao Cup, beating Nottingham Forest 4-0.

With that in mind, they should focus their efforts on more defensive recruits in the remaining weeks of the window.

They are interested in signing Marseille defender Duje Caleta-Car but another centre-half based in France is catching their eye.

That happens to be Lille’s Sven Botman. Fabrizio Romano revealed the news on Wednesday evening before Tim Spiers delivered the following three-word claim on Thursday.

Responding to a fan, he said: “Definite interest there.”

Brilliant signing

At just 21 years of age, Botman fits the profile of Wolves signing perfectly.

Under the stewardship of Nuno Santo and Fosun, they’ve made direct attempts to sign players who they can develop and make a potential profit on.

Diogo Jota is the prime example of a player they crafted before making big money on, while the same eventuality could befall Adama Traore and Pedro Neto.

However, we want to focus on what Botman would bring to Wolves now, rather than in the future.

A gifted ball-playing centre-half, the young Dutchman is also supreme when the ball is off the air. As Lille beat PSG to the Ligue 1 crown last season, he won 3.2 aerial duels per match which was more than anyone else at Wolves.

Furthermore, he completed 86.5% of his passes, remaining calm and composed at the back.

At 6 foot 3, he is cut from a similar cloth as Willy Boly, a player who has used his big frame to a great deal of success at Molineux. Once described as a “leader” by former head coach Christophe Galtier, he looks like he has all of the attributes to thrive in the Premier League.

Wolves don’t have too many leaders beyond Ruben Neves and Conor Coady so that’s another plus point for Lage.

With all of that in mind, supporters should be excited about their hopes for the remaining weeks of the window.

AND in other news, Wolves make offer to sign £17m “phenomenon” before deadline day, Lage needs him…
