Marcus Rashford warned Barcelona could send him back to Man Utd by England legend with loanee's performances labelled 'not unbelievable'

Marcus Rashford has been sent a stern warning by England legend Chris Waddle that Barcelona could send him back to Manchester United despite his impressive statistics. The English forward, who joined Barca on loan after being exiled by United boss Ruben Amorim, has made an impressive start to life under Hansi Flick, yet Waddle insists the 27-year-old is still on trial.

  • Rashford shining at Barcelona

It’s been a rollercoaster year for Rashford. Once the poster boy of United’s revival under Erik ten Hag, he found himself out in the cold after a collapse in form. He had a fallout with Amorim and ended up being dumped into United’s so-called 'bomb squad' during pre-season. His loan to Barcelona has offered him a lifeline – in just 13 appearances, the Englishman has chalked up five goals and seven assists, including a brilliant brace in the 6-1 demolition of Olympiacos in the Champions League. The stats are promising, and the performances have been mostly solid. But Waddle believes that his current level might not be enough to convince a club that has made ruthless calls on bigger names.

    Waddle's ruthless warning to Rashford

Speaking to , who offer the best football odds, Waddle said: "This season will be crucial for Rashford. He cannot afford to be inconsistent; he must perform exceptionally in every game as if it's a cup final to secure a deal with Barcelona. This is complicated by the transfer fees involved and his current lucrative contract, which Barcelona may be unwilling to pay.

“The club might be thinking, ‘We're paying his wages, but we've saved a considerable amount on a transfer fee for a season.’ If he performs exceptionally, scoring 20 goals and consistently earning man of the match, Barcelona would have no choice but to sign him. However, his current performances are merely OK, not unbelievable. As the season progresses, it's essentially a trial period for him."

Barcelona, still recovering from years of financial turmoil, have spent the last two seasons cutting costs and offloading high earners. Rashford’s lucrative contract at United, which runs until 2028, remains one of the most substantial in the Premier League. And Waddle believes the financial side could become Rashford’s biggest stumbling block.

"A major hurdle in any potential signing could be the player's wages," he said. "Barcelona may not be willing to match Rashford’s current salary, creating a stumbling block as they typically don't pay that level of compensation. Barcelona is linked with many available players. It remains to be seen if they have another target for the left-wing or centre-forward positions, or someone else lined up for the summer. He's attempting to secure a contract from a club that is interested but not fully committed. They might send him back if they have another player in mind. Most top players will quickly move to clubs like Real Madrid or Barcelona, so Barcelona could have alternative plans.”

  • Rashford wants Barcelona stay

Despite the uncertainty, Rashford has made no secret of his affection for life in Catalonia. The forward, visibly more relaxed than during his final months in Manchester, spoke openly about his experience in a recent interview with Barcelona’s YouTube channel.

"I’m really enjoying my time in Spain," he began. "The weather is the best part. It’s a very big change. I’m learning every day, I’m really enjoying it. I hope to be here for a long time. I get along really well with Roony (Bardghji), as well as Jules (Kounde) and Frenkie (De Jong). It’s a team where we all blend together. We’re united. The team is fantastic. I just have to be in the right position. I’ll keep trying to do this. We have to keep going like this to be our best. We have a lot more to do this season."

He added: "I’m enjoying this football club and I think for anybody who loves football, Barcelona is one of the key clubs in the history of the game so to play here is an honour. I just believe that things happen when they’re supposed to happen. It’s not the first time I spoke with Barcelona about potentially coming here, but for whatever reasons it didn’t happen in the past, and now is my opportunity to make it happen. I feel like there’s no time like the present now.

"People forget this, but 23 years of my life was with Manchester United. So sometimes you just need a change. I think maybe this is the case with me and yeah, I’m enjoying everything. I don’t feel there is much change in me, I just feel it’s a new environment and culture and one I looked forward to coming here. It’s just about me adapting and fitting in as well as possible. I’m so hungry to keep improving."

Clash at the Bernabeu: Reality check for Rashford

Rashford’s newfound momentum met a stumbling block at the Bernabeu as he was unable to prevent Barcelona from slipping to a 2-1 defeat to Real Madrid, although the England international did provide the assist for his side's only goal. Next up for Rashford and Barca is a clash against Elche on November 2, where the forward will be desperate to prove that the Madrid setback was just a blip.

Newcastle have struck gold on “unplayable" star who's worth more than Wissa

It was a chaotic final few days of the transfer for Newcastle United. The summer window did not go to plan, with the club missing out on key targets and losing Alexander Isak late on, with the striker’s move to Liverpool finally going through after a saga that lasted several months.

Yet, they did manage to strengthen towards the back end of the window. German international striker Nick Woltemade made the move from Bundesliga side Stuttgart. His switch to St James’ Park cost the Magpies a club record fee of £69m, including add-ons.

The German forward was not the only last-minute attacking reinforcement, with Brentford striker Yoane Wissa finally forcing his move to Newcastle through.

Wissa’s move to Newcastle

DR Congo star Wissa finally got his move from West London to the North East on deadline day after forcing the transfer through. Like Isak did at Newcastle, the Brentford attacker did not train and released social media statements to make his desire to join the Magpies clear.

In the end, his move was completed, with the 29-year-old joining Eddie Howe’s side for a fee of £55m, which includes add-ons. Wissa will don the famous number nine shirt, previously worn by the great Alan Shearer.

Perhaps this piles the pressure onto the experienced attacker, but his numbers from the last few Premier League seasons suggest he is good enough to cope.

He’s bagged 45 Premier League goals so far in his career, reaching double figures the last two seasons and finding the back of the net on 19 occasions in 2024/25, his most prolific campaign.

That being said, the Magpies already have an attacker they can rely on. One who cost less than Wissa did, and is now worth even more than their new number nine.

How Gordon's market value compares to Wissa

There are quite a few highly valued Newcastle players, including the midfield pairing of Bruno Guimaraes and Sandro Tonali – the former having reportedly been the subject of a £120m offer from Saudi Arabia.

Yet, there is one name that really sticks out and that is another Howe-signed player, Anthony Gordon. The England international has become a key player at St James’ Park, and in light of Isak’s departure, is arguably their key forward. Statman Dave even said he can be “unplayable” at times.

The former Everton player, who is a graduate of their academy, has played 108 times for the Magpies.

In that time, he’s bagged 22 goals and assisted 23. His best season came in 2023/24, where he scored and assisted 26 Premier League goals in just 35 games.

Some of his numbers from the last two seasons show exactly why Gordon is so important to Newcastle.

For example, in 2023/24, he averaged 1.8 key passes and 1.7 successful dribbles per 90 minutes, and last term, those stats read 1.9 key passes and 1.4 successful dribbles.

With that in mind, it might not be a surprise to learn that h/e is so highly valued and is worth far more than Wissa. The Merseysider is valued at £56.2m, as per Transfermarkt, over double that of Wissa’s current market value of £27.6m, and more than what they paid for the DR Congo star.

It is worth noting that Gordon also cost less than Wissa, with Newcastle paying just £45m including add-ons. Not only is he worth more than his new teammate’s market value and transfer fee, but he was a cheaper deal.

There is no doubting Gordon’s importance to this Newcastle side. The 24-year-old is a key component of Howe’s outfit, and that is reflected in his current market value, which is so high it’s double that of Wissa’s.

Harry Brook confirmed as England's new white-ball captain

England batter will take over from Jos Buttler across both T20I and ODI formats

Andrew Miller07-Apr-2025Harry Brook has been confirmed as England’s new white-ball captain, across both T20I and ODI formats, after Jos Buttler’s decision to stand down following his team’s early exit from the ICC Champions Trophy in March.Brook, 26, has been England’s vice-captain in white-ball cricket for the past year, and led the side in Buttler’s absence for five ODIs against Australia last September. His first outing as the official captain will come in three home T20Is and three ODIs against West Indies at the end of May.”It’s a real honour to be named England’s white-ball captain,” Brook said. “Ever since I was a kid playing cricket at Burley in Wharfedale, I dreamed of representing Yorkshire, playing for England, and maybe one day leading the team. To now be given that chance means a great deal to me.”Brook had been the outstanding candidate for the role after emerging as a key player across formats since his debut in 2022, including Test cricket, for which he is currently ranked as the No.2 batter behind his England team-mate Joe Root, having made a career-best 317 against Pakistan in Multan last year.Speculation had mounted about Brook’s impending appointment when, on the eve of this year’s IPL, he pulled out of his deal with Delhi Capitals for the second year running, citing the need for England to remain his “priority and focus” ahead of a busy 12 months across formats, including key Test series against India and Australia, and the next T20 World Cup in February 2026.”I want to thank my family and coaches who’ve supported me every step of the way,” Brook said. “Their belief in me has made all the difference and I wouldn’t be in this position without them.Related

“There’s so much talent in this country, and I’m looking forward to getting started, moving us forward, and working towards winning series, World Cups and major events. I’m excited to get going and give it everything I’ve got.”Though still relatively inexperienced as a leader, Brook impressed with his tactical nous in the 3-2 series loss to Australia in September, having also led the Under-19 team at the 2018 World Cup. He has also captained Northern Superchargers in the Men’s Hundred, when available.Though there were no realistic alternatives to Brook as T20I captain, there had been some thought as to whether Ben Stokes should take on the role in ODI cricket, given his existing relationship with Brendon McCullum, and the extent to which the 50-over and Test squads have overlapped in recent months.Speaking in March, Rob Key, England men’s managing director, acknowledged it would be “stupid” not to consider Stokes’ credentials. However, with Stokes still recuperating from hamstring surgery, and given that he had previously retired from the format in 2022 citing his workload, this option was not pursued.Key said: “I’m delighted that Harry Brook has accepted the role as England’s white-ball captain across both formats. He’s been part of our succession planning for some time, albeit this opportunity has come slightly earlier than expected.”Harry is not only an outstanding cricketer, but also has an excellent cricketing brain and a clear vision for both teams that will help drive us towards winning more series, World Cups and major global tournaments.”To date, Brook has played 26 ODIs for England, scoring 816 runs at 34.00, including a match-winning century as captain against Australia last summer. In T20Is, he has played 44 games, averaging 28.50 with a top score of 81 not out, and was part of the team that won the T20 World Cup in Australia in 2022.

Rayudu: Sai Kishore 'as good as anybody' in the Indian team

Ian Bishop says Sai Kishore has a chance to lead GT’s spin attack this season

ESPNcricinfo staff07-Apr-20252:14

Amabti Rayudu recalls his time with Sai Kishore

Former India batter Ambati Rayudu thinks Gujarat Titans (GT) left-arm spinner R Sai Kishore is “as good as anybody” who is part of the India team at the moment. Sai Kishore is currently GT’s second-highest wicket-taker and also the second-highest wicket-taker among all spinners in IPL 2025, with eight strikes in four matches at an economy rate of 7.06. His overall T20 economy rate of 5.98 after 74 matches is even more impressive.”This guy has always improved day in and day out. He used to work much harder than many people in the nets,” Rayudu said on ESPNcricinfo’s TimeOut show, having spent time with Sai Kishore when they were part of Chennai Super Kings (CSK) during IPL 2020 and 2021. Sai Kishore didn’t get a game for CSK and then moved to GT in 2022, when he made his IPL debut. Ahead of the IPL 2025 mega auction, GT used their RTM (Right to Match) card on Sai Kishore and bought him back.”He used to be the first to start, and the last to go out,” Rayudu said. “And he used to bowl to every batsman, [and] ask them for feedback [regarding] what his lengths were. He was constantly learning. That’s the greatest aspect, and now you see his control in terms of length. And he also bowls differently to each batsman. He doesn’t bowl the same ball. A lot of bowlers that we see are so comfortable bowling one length or one line. He is not that kind of bowler; he can adjust accordingly.”Related

Against Sunrisers Hyderabad on Sunday, Sai Kishore bagged 2 for 24 in four overs. That included the wickets of spin-hitters Heinrich Klaasen and Nitish Kumar. Rayudu was particularly impressed with how Sai Kishore outsmarted Klaasen.”The way he celebrated Klaasen’s wicket today; he rarely celebrates. I know why he celebrated – because he planned for that,” Rayudu said. “He bowled over the stumps to Klaasen so that he could take the ball away from his arc. And then he came around, and he knew Klaasen would go for his pick-up shot. So he bowled that quicker one. So I think he planned for it; he plans a lot.”Sai Kishore has played three T20Is for India, as part of a second-string side, at the Asian Games in October 2023. Since then, he hasn’t represented India in any format.”He is quite the guy not to get into the Indian side,” Rayudu said. “I think, going forward, it will be great if he gets into the Indian side because he is as good as anybody who is playing in the Indian team now.”Ian Bishop, meanwhile, recalled an interview with Sai Kishore, where the spinner spoke of the adjustments he had to make when GT were playing Mumbai Indians earlier this season.”SKY [Suryakumar Yadav] was sweeping it. I asked, ‘What did you do differently today?’ And he said, ‘Today, I had to bowl more defensively because the ball wasn’t gripping as much’,” Bishop said. “So he was around the wicket to the left-hand batters, [angling] across.”The guy has played only ten [14] games [in the IPL], and this is the first year that he’s going to be one of the leaders of the spin-bowling attack because it’s always been Jaddu and those guys at CSK, and Noor Ahmad and Rashid [Khan] at GT. But now, he has a chance to be a leader.”

Ireland go 2-0 up despite Harshitha Samarawickrama century

Half-centuries from Amy Hunter, Leah Paul and Rebecca Stokell laid the foundations for a 15-run victory

ESPNcricinfo staff18-Aug-2024Half-centuries from Amy Hunter, Leah Paul and Rebecca Stokell laid the foundations and Arlene Kelly applied the finishing touches with a three-wicket haul as Ireland took an unassailable 2-0 lead over Sri Lanka with a 15-run win in the second ODI in Belfast. As in Friday’s first ODI, however, Sri Lanka made the hosts earn their win. An impressive all-round display from Kavisha Dilhari and a maiden ODI century from the in-form Harshitha Samarawickrama put Sri Lanka in a position of some control in their chase of 256. A 126-run stand between these two left them needing 84 in 98 balls, with eight wickets in hand, but Ireland hit back thereafter, with Kelly, Jane Maguire and run-outs combining to derail the visitors’ chase.Leah Paul innovates on her way to 81•Cricket IrelandWith her 124-ball 105, Samarawickrama became the third member of Sri Lanka’s ODI centurions club, one match after Vishmi Gunaratne had ended Chamari Athapaththu’s long spell as its sole representative.Having pulled off their record ODI chase to win the first ODI, Ireland put up another impressive batting display after being sent in. Achini Kulasuriya removed both their openers in her new-ball spell, and when Dilhari took out Orla Prendergast, their centurion from Friday, they were 77 for 3. Hunter and Paul got them moving with a 57-run fourth-wicket stand, before Athapaththu struck to send Hunter back for a 71-ball 66.Then came the partnership that set Ireland up for their victory push, with Paul and Stokell adding 114 off 112 balls for the fifth wicket. Paul was out in the final over for 81 off 101 balls, while Stokell finished unbeaten on 53 off 61.

"Deal agreed": Journalist says Liverpool have completed "statement signing"

Liverpool won hearts and minds with their Premier League title victory and could now be on the verge of ratifying one of the summer’s most exciting deals.

Liverpool make an instant impact in the summer window

The dust has started to settle on Liverpool claiming a second top-flight title of the modern era. Still, there have already been significant developments at Anfield in the early part of the summer window.

Jeremie Frimpong arrived to replace Trent Alexander-Arnold on Merseyside, and that only appears to be the tip of the iceberg when it comes to potential movement in both directions.

Finance expert Kieran Maguire has confirmed that Liverpool have £250 million to spend if they so wish without any threat of FFP involvement, which has paved the way for some exciting deals to occur over the next few months.

“Liverpool are in an excellent financial position. They didn’t spend very much in the 24-25 season, and they have the benefits of Champions League football next season. If they spent £250m, that would not be a problem.”

Arne Slot made minimal changes last summer, but he has now identified Newcastle United’s Anthony Gordon as a top target at Anfield, even if he will cost around £80 million to lure from the North East.

Why the summer transfer window will close for six days and re-open again

Premier League clubs have recently voted for the transfer window to open early this summer – here’s how it will work and why it’s happening.

Finding themselves in the perfect position to kick on, Liverpool will be aware that their rivals are also tooling up with some intriguing signings, setting the scene for a brilliant Premier League title fight next term.

Now, Fabrizio Romano has confirmed the Reds are on the verge of completing a landmark deal ahead of the new campaign coming into focus.

Romano: Liverpool agree deal to sign Florian Wirtz

Taking to social media platform X, Romano revealed that Liverpool have now agreed a deal in principle to sign Florian Wirtz from Bayer Leverkusen and he will now head to England for his medical.

With personal terms and other formalities already agreed, it is understood that the Germany international will join for a fee of around £127 million, inclusive of add-ons.

Compared to Lionel Messi by Gerhard Struber, Wirtz registered 16 goals and 15 assists across 46 appearances in all competitions last term, and Reds journalist Paul Gorst said he will be a “statement signing”.

Notably, he earns around £73,300 at Bayer Leverkusen, a figure that will be expected to increase exponentially once his switch to Anfield is officially confirmed.

Weeks of overwhelming speculation surrounding Wirtz have become the early story of the window. Nevertheless, he now appears set to link up with Slot in a deal that will reverberate around the world.
