Both Everton and Southampton became worse run after bumper investment

Before David Moyes was a failed Manchester United manager and the dour caricature he is today, he regularly worked wonders with his patchwork Everton team on a faintly ridiculous budget.

Having hauled the flailing Merseysiders away from the lower reaches of the Premier League table, the Scotsman relied on the intelligent recruitment of cheap, but hungry players to propel his side towards European qualification.

Season-in, season-out, the Toffees would not be pretty, they would likely make a slow start and lose key players but they would also be top-half fixtures despite having barely any money to spend.

Their fans longed for a big-money investor.

Southampton’s return to the top flight was powered by an outstanding crop of players; Adam Lallana, Rickie Lambert, Morgan Scheiderlin and Jose Fonte, to name a few.

Those players were so good that they were inevitably going to get picked off but the Saints were ready. Their extensive scouting network allowed them to sell high and buy low; with replacements picked out for every member of staff at the club, including the manager.

Being prepared for the big boys to come calling allowed them to regenerate their squad season after season, often making a profit and never being in any grave danger of the relegation zone.

As the two sides prepare to face off this weekend, the inescapable conclusion is that huge injections of cash meant both clubs moved away from their successful models and became worse off for it.

Farhad Moshiri finally provided Everton with the ability to compete on an even financial footing and the Toffees brought in Leicester City’s transfer guru Steve Walsh – the man behind N’Golo Kante and Riyad Mahrez – to ensure the money was spent wisely.

But, along with Ronald Koeman, Walsh and Moshiri went off like a kid in a sweet shop accumulating big-money signings the club could only dream of under Moyes, seemingly unaware that they were failing to recruit much in the way of pace or a goal threat to replace Romelu Lukaku.

The fans were excited – it was a new sensation after all; Everton were no longer begging, borrowing and stealing their players but procuring them from across Europe at great expense – but they are now restless.

Even Walsh, the man brought in to ensure the spending brought quality to the club, lost sight of his principles. Having been tasked with procuring hidden gems for a small outlay at Leicester, he was suddenly given millions to spend and the Director of Football appeared to take that as an invitation to do away with what had brought him success.

Out were due diligence and a reliance on statistical measures, because Everton could finally afford to shop at a higher level. The Merseysiders were a richer but worse run club as a result of Moshiri’s investment and the bumper Premier League television deal and it is all their own doing.

There will be Premier League football at Goodison Park next season but it is becoming increasingly likely that St Mary’s will be a second tier ground come August, although Southampton’s struggles are less self-inflicted but potentially more damaging as they stare down the barrel of relegation after years of top flight stability.

Southampton’s approach to Premier League survival has generally centred around the belief that every player has his price.

The Saints have made a habit of selling their top talent for an inflated fee, safe in the knowledge that they have already identified and extensively scouted a replacement, who can be procured for a fraction of the price.

However, when every Premier League club benefited from the huge windfall from the most recent television rights deal, clubs across Europe knew just how flush they had become.

That made it more difficult for Southampton to get value for money with their replacements and has resulted in expensive flops such as Guido Carrillo, while fellow record signings Mario Lemina and Manolo Gabbiadini have struggled for consistency.

Having more money theoretically should have made it easier for Southampton to keep their top talent, but once they had set the precedent of allowing their best players to leave, the likes of Virgil van Dijk expected it to continue when their time came.

As the pair prepare to meet after both enduring underwhelming seasons, it is clear that being rich has undermined Southampton and Everton’s history of shrewd, cut-price recruitment.

Everton have got away with it – they can sack Sam Allardyce in the summer and go again, having learned their lessons – but Southampton may not be so lucky.

Either way, both teams should serve as cautionary tales that having money to burn is not always the solution to a football club’s problems.

Revealed: Majority of Arsenal fans want club to sign Gareth Bale this summer

Real Madrid forward Gareth Bale scored the equaliser for his team in their 2-2 draw with Barcelona at the Camp Nou in the latest episode of El Clasico on Sunday, and his showing didn’t go unnoticed by Arsenal fans on Twitter, who urged their club to sign the Wales international.

The 28-year-old, who earns £350,000-a-week after tax according to The Guardian, has endured another injury-hit campaign, but he has been more of a regular in the XI in recent months and has scored 16 goals – as well as providing a further eight assists – in 36 appearances in all competitions.

The attacker still has four years remaining on his contract with the La Liga giants, but if Zinedine Zidane wants to shake-up his attack this summer Bale could be on his way.

We asked Arsenal fans to vote on our poll to see whether they would back a summer move for the Welshman, and 65% of those supporters would like to see him arrive at the Emirates Stadium alongside whoever their new manager is going to be.

It looks likely to be a busy summer transfer window for the Gunners, but it remains to be seen whether much work is done on the attack seeing as they already have Mesut Ozil, Henrikh Mkhitaryan, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Alexandre Lacazette.

If Gerrard can pull transfer off, Lucas Leiva would help sort out Rangers’ gutless midfield

As reported by The Scottish Sun, Rangers are interested in signing Lazio midfielder Lucas Leiva this summer.

What’s the story?

The upcoming transfer window is set to be an exciting one for Rangers supporters.

With the club having already signed Allan McGregor and Scott Arfield, new names linked with a move to Ibrox are arriving almost daily as incoming boss Steven Gerrard thinks about what kind of team he wants on the park next season.

One player the Anfield boss is interested in is former teammate Lucas Leiva, according to The Scottish Sun.

The paper say that Gerrard is looking to lure the Brazilian away from Lazio, who he signed for last summer.

The report states that while the Italian club wouldn’t be eager to sell, the player himself is keen on a chance to work with Gerrard.

The player is currently rated as worth £6.75m by Transfermarkt.

Is this a viable move for the Light Blues this summer?

Will this move come off?

There is absolutely no doubt that Lucas would improve a Rangers midfield which has again been a massive let down for supporters this season.

While there is hope in young talents like Ross McCrorie and Greg Docherty, the rest have left fans in uninspired and worried about the future direction of the team.

At times it’s a midfield that has simply not been committed enough to grinding out the results that Rangers need to compete with Celtic.

Lucas is an elite player and his game is built around hard work and determination. Gerrard’s interest in him highlights his desire and ambition for what he wants his team to be.

Sadly it’s not a move that seems likely any time soon. Rangers may have some resources this summer, but they don’t have the kind of cash to scoop up players that signed for major clubs in multi-million pound deals just a year ago.

Unless Gerrard can work some kind of magic with regards to his relationship with the player, the club should be looking at more realistic options.

The Verdict: Is Manuel Pellegrini a good appointment for West Ham?

Following the departure of David Moyes, West Ham confirmed on Tuesday the managerial appointment of Manuel Pellegrini, who has signed a three-year contract at the London Stadium.

The Chilean boasts an impressive CV, including a Premier League title win with Manchester City, a spell in the hot seat at Real Madrid and impressive stints at Malaga and Villarreal. For a club looking to disrupt the Premier League’s top seven, it seems like a solid appointment.

But is Pellegrini the right fit for perhaps the most idiosyncratic club in the English top flight? Football FanCast’s expert writers give their verdicts below…

James Beavis

“I think he is the best managerial appointment West Ham have made during the Premier League era. While he may appear quite withdrawn, Pellegrini is hugely experienced, knows the Premier League well and he can finally get this West Ham team sorted and organised from a defensive point of view. His appointment will certainly provide more of a pull factor for potential new signings, and the club should be fighting for a top 8 finish minimum under the Chilean, who has never finished lower than seventh while managing in Europe.”

Ben Goodwin

“Yes, quite simply because who could they get that’s better? Rafael Benitez is the only linked name with a better track record than Pellegrini, and fans would quickly turn against his tactical, defensive style if things went south. Fonseca brings the charisma and style, but without a proven record in a top league. Pellegrini is the best of both worlds, and with a few smart additions to the spine of the team he will have the Hammers comfortably in the top ten.”

Chris McMullan

“How can you not love the Charming One? More importantly this is a man with the pedigree and the CV befitting of a club with a 50,000+ seater stadium and who are looking onwards and upwards. His time at Manchester City, most importantly, shows that he can unite a squad which had been divided in the final year of the Roberto Mancini reign, going on to win the league and League Cup double in his first season. He even took Manchester City and Villarreal to Champions League semi-finals, showing he’s a cup manager as well as a league one, and a man who can have his teams punching above their weight.”

Sam Preston

“He’s pretty much as good as West Ham could get at this stage. His serene persona is the perfect antidote to the pressure cooker in east London and he plays the attacking football the fans crave. He has experience of managing elite players and also of getting teams to punch above their weight. I expect him to take West Ham into the top ten.”

James Jones

“I think it’s the appointment West Ham have owed their fans for some time now. It’s an ambitious appointment; Pellegrini has experience of working wonders with a limited budget at both Villarreal and Malaga and he plays attacking football, which Hammers fans have been crying out for under the likes of Sam Allardyce and David Moyes. If he’s backed in the transfer window then I can see this paying off well for West Ham. Exciting times.”

HYS: Should Newcastle swoop for Josh King this summer?

Newcastle are once again being linked to Bournemouth striker Josh King, so should the Magpies make a move for the Norwegian this summer?

Rafael Benitez is a long-term admirer of Bournemouth striker King, and the 26 year-old says he is open to leaving the Cherries this summer.

Newcastle are in desperate need of some more firepower up front, as Aleksandar Mitrovic seems destined to leave, Islam Slimani just wasn’t good enough, and Dwight Gayle has been unable to replicate his Championship form in the top tier.

“I do not like to blame anything, but I have to say that I was surprised that I returned in pre-season and was switched to a deeper position than I did so well in the year before,” the pacey striker said.

King had what seemed like a breakout season in 2016-17, grabbing 16 Premier League goals for the Cherries, but was used as more of a number ten this year, bagging just eight goals from the attacking midfield spot.

[ad_pod ]

“I started one match as the spearhead this year. I am 110 per cent unhappy with the change in position. I am not satisfied and my coach knows. I think most people know where I am the best.

“I have three years left on my contract and I am a Bournemouth player now, but in football you never know.”

King’s comments certainly sound like those of a man who is itching to prove his 16-goal haul wasn’t a one off, and Benitez’s vote of confidence could push him one step further to a 20-goal season.

So, Newcastle fans, do you think you should swoop for King? Is he any better than what you already have? Let us know by voting in the poll below…

Zidane’s resignation may see Perez reignite Real Madrid interest in De Gea

The departure of Zinedine Zidane, who did not want Real Madrid to push on with a bid for David de Gea, is a blow to Manchester United’s hopes of keeping hold of the Spanish goalkeeper, according to the Sun.

What’s the story, then?

The Sun report that Zidane’s resignation boiled down to transfer business; the Frenchman wanted to press forward with a bid for Eden Hazard; Florentino Perez didn’t, preferring to push ahead with a swoop for De Gea, but Zidane had faith in Keylor Navas.

They say that Zidane stepping down means that Perez will have the freedom to pursue De Gea aggressively this summer, as he sticks to his hands-on approach to signing world superstars to bolster the playing staff.

De Gea has been linked with a new contract at Old Trafford for a number of months, but as yet nothing has been finalised.

De Gea is indispensible

For all the big-name players that are already at Old Trafford and may well come in over the summer, De Gea is the most important by far.

He has saved United on countless occasions over the years, yet again being named the club’s Player of the Season and providing the ultimate safety blanket to a defence that still looks shaky, even using Mourinho’s conservative tactics.

He simply cannot be allowed to leave at any price; there are no better goalkeepers on the market and selling a man who is so clearly the club’s best player would be a major backwards step.

Tottenham fans say their goodbyes to Dembele

Tottenham fans are saying their goodbyes to a long time fan favourite, as reports claim the club have accepted a bid for Mousa Dembele.

According to French outlet RMC, Tottenham have accepted a £30m bid from an unnamed Chinese club for their midfield maestro.

Dembele only has 12 months left on his current deal, so getting such a big fee for the midfielder is fantastic business, but nonetheless fans are gutted to lose their Belgian beast.

The wiry midfielder has been the first name on the team sheet in recent years, and is the crucial cog in linking defence and attack for Pochettino’s side.

His style of play will be difficult to maintain in the Premier League as he enters his thirties though, prompting the decision from both player and club to cash in and say goodbye.

Spurs have been linked with a whole host of midfielders as they look to buff up their midfield options, and a £15m swoop for Jack Grealish seems the most likely move to happen in the immediate future.

While most fans would agree that £30m for an ageing player with 12 months on his contract is great business, it still hurts to say goodbye to such a popular player, and emotions are running high on Twitter.

You can find some of the best reactions down below, where some fans are fearing the worst about a Dembele-less future…

Newcastle fans desperate to keep Ritchie

According to The Sun, Newcastle United winger Matt Ritchie could return to Bournemouth this summer in a deal that would see Josh King move in the opposite direction.

[ad_pod ]

Ritchie, who scored three times and registered six assists in 35 Premier League appearances last season, moved to Newcastle from Bournemouth in the summer of 2016.

Cherries forward King has been linked with a move to Newcastle over the last few months, with the former Manchester United youngster scoring eight Premier League goals last term.

According to The Sun, a swap deal is in the offing this summer, with Ritchie returning to the Vitality Stadium, and King making the switch to Newcastle.

[brid autoplay=”true” video=”256266″ player=”12034″ title=”Watch Three reasons we love to hate… Spain”]

The Newcastle fans have been reacting to the speculation on social media, and it would be fair to say that they are desperate for Ritchie to remain at St James’ Park this summer.

Indeed, the attacker, who is valued at £10.8m by transfermarkt.co.uk, was one of the team’s most consistent performers during the 2017-18 Premier League season.

A selection of the Twitter reaction from the Newcastle supporters can be seen below:

Sunderland chasing Peterborough captain Jack Baldwin

According to Sky Sports, Sunderland have made an enquiry about defender Jack Baldwin, who is the skipper of League One rival Peterborough United.

What’s the Story?

Sunderland are making enquiries into the availability of the defender, after Chairman Stewart Donald revealed on Twitter that he was hoping to name four new signings for the Black Cats in the coming weeks.

The Wearside club do face competition if they want to sign the defender, with Bolton Wanderers thought to be trying to tie up a deal for Baldwin. Peterborough United, though, will likely try and fight off interest to keep hold of their man.

Would Jack Baldwin be the right fit for Sunderland?

Baldwin would come to the club with precious League One experience, and will understand the level well. He would also bring valuable versatility, able to play at centre-back, right-back and in midfield, and Transfermarkt value him at just £360k – although Peterborough could demand significantly more than that.

At 24 years of age, Baldwin would also join the club approaching his prime. However, the defender Baldwin spend a significant portion of last season out due to injury. With a long season ahead, Jack Ross will need all his players at his disposal if he is to achieve his objectives at Sunderland.

[ad_pod ]

A new approach

Signing Baldwin would be a shrewd move from Ross. It would signal a move away from the old Sunderland, bringing in rejects from Premier league clubs and unknown quantities from abroad, which has seen them make some awful moves in previous transfer windows. With John O’Shea on his way out of the club, Ross will need a leader at the back to replace the Irishman, and Baldwin looks a solid replacement.

Kenya gain comprehensive revenge

Kenya gained some revenge for back-to-back Twenty20 defeats earlier in the week with a comprehensive nine-wicket win over Uganda

Cricinfo staff18-Dec-2009Kenya 105 for 1 (Patel 57*) beat Uganda 104 (Obado 3-10, Oluoch 3-23) by nine wicketsKenya gained some revenge for back-to-back Twenty20 defeats earlier in the week with a comprehensive nine-wicket win over Uganda in the first ODI at Nairobi Gymkhana. The result also buys a little relief for Kenya’s under-fire selectors after recent poor results. In the two Twenty20 matches it was Kenya’s batsmen who let them down – this time it was the Ugandans whose inexperience was plain to see. None of them was able to play an innings of any substance or to take the attack to the bowlers, so much so that there were only eight boundaries in their innings. There was the briefest worry when David Obuya fell to the fourth ball of Kenya’s reply, but then Rakep Patel (57*) and Maurice Ouma (44*) chased down the target in 17.2 overs with no further alarms. Patel played with increasing confidence, cracking five fours and two sixes in his 59-ball innings.
