Spencer Johnson, Josh Brown lead Brisbane Heat to second BBL title

Heat ended their 11-year title drought to earn redemption with an upset victory over Sixers

Tristan Lavalette24-Jan-2024In-form opener Josh Brown provided the spark before fast bowler Spencer Johnson claimed four wickets as Brisbane Heat earned redemption with an upset victory over Sydney Sixers to capture their second BBL title.Defying a 43,153 crowd at the SCG, where Sixers had won 12 of their last 14 matches, Heat ended their 11-year title drought in dominant fashion.Heat made an imposing 166 for 8 with Brown backing up from his record century against Adelaide Strikers in the Challenger by blasting 53 off 38 balls on a tricky surface. He threatened another outrageous knock before falling in veteran spinner Steve O’Keefe’s last over of his professional career.Heat had been unable to defend 175 in last season’s epic final against Perth Scorchers, but their attack was unstoppable with Johnson finishing with 4 for 26 in the best figures recorded in a BBL final. It was sweet redemption for Heat, who all season have been spurred by the heartbreaking loss to Scorchers. They were the form team through the season and finished on top of the ladder before exacting revenge over Sixers, who had easily won the Qualifier on the Gold Coast. It was a bitter disappointment for powerhouse Sixers, who were hoping to provide O’Keefe with a fairy-tale finish. But their hot late-season form came to a screeching halt as they fell well short of winning a fourth title. After four straight victories, Sixers had entered as favourites and they surprisingly elected to bowl given their expertise at defending on the slow and low SCG surface. But batting proved difficult in overcast and humid conditions with Heat restricted to just 16 runs in the powerplay.Seamer Sean Abbott, named in Australia’s white-ball squads against West Indies, produced menacing late swing and nicked off elevated opener Jimmy Peirson in the first over. All eyes were on Brown, who became the talk of the cricket world after his extraordinary 140 off 57 balls against Adelaide Strikers in the Challenger. It was the third-highest score in BBL history marked by a record 12 sixes. But he was forced to be watchful against the seaming new ball and scored just three runs off his first 10 deliveries.Josh Brown made 53 off 38•Cricket Australia/Getty ImagesIt was only a matter of time before Brown went for broke and just before the powerplay ended he was fortunate when Ben Dwarshuis missed a tough chance diving forward at deep square. Brown made them pay by smashing the first ball after the powerplay for six and he combined well with close mate and skipper Nathan McSweeney, who pounced on uncharacteristically wayward Sixers bowlingBrown took a liking to Hayden Kerr’s modest pace and clubbed him for consecutive sixes before bringing up his half-century with a gorgeous cover drive. Heat moved into a strong position at 90 for 1 before the reliable Dwarshuis had McSweeney hitting to deep fine leg then O’Keefe trapped Brown lbw in a decision overturned on review.O’Keefe received a standing ovation from the Sixers’ crowd after finishing his typically miserly spell as Heat slowed down considerably after Brown’s dismissal. But they reignited with Max Bryant and Matt Renshaw clubbing 31 runs in the power surge across the 17th and 18th overs as Heat finished strongly. Heat’s momentum continued with the ball when spearhead Michael Neser had opener Daniel Hughes caught at slip in the first over.Johnson was expensive before bowling Jack Edwards off the inside edge on the last ball of the powerplay. Sixers slowed to a crawl as Johnson returned in the ninth over to dismiss opener Josh Phillipe as the home team slumped to 56 for 3.Heat remained wary with memories of last year’s final still fresh with Scorchers 54 for 3 before storming home. But Heat were not to be denied with recalled legspinner Mitchell Swepson producing a fizzing legbreak that befuddled Jordan Silk and he was superbly stumped by Peirson.Sixers’ faint hopes rested with skipper Moises Henriques, who tested positive for Covid-19 earlier in the week but played amid protocols. He had produced remarkable clutch batting just eight days ago against Scorchers in Perth, but his dismissal on the third ball of the power surge effectively ended the contest. It wasn’t long before Heat celebrated with gusto to banish the ghosts of Optus Stadium.

Villiers spins Sunrisers to resounding win over The Blaze

Mady Villiers’ beguiling spin proved too much for an under-strength and out of form The Blaze as Sunrisers raced to a seven-wicket win in a rain-shortened encounter at Chelmsford. The former England white-ball international returned 3 for 18 from nine overs as the visitors, missing the likes of Tammy Beaumont, Bryce siblings Kathryn and Sarah and the injured Georgie Boyce were routed for 87 in a game reduced to 42 overs a-side.England U19 Jodi Grewcock wheeled away at the opposite end from Villiers to take 1 for 7 from eight overs, meaning the Blaze lost four wickets for four runs, collapsing from 48 for 2 to 52 for 6 before Australian seamer Nicola Hancock mopped up the tail with 3 for 20.Sunrisers suffered a couple of early setbacks, but skipper Grace Scrivens’ unbeaten 46 saw Sunrisers home in the 21st over, Villiers fittingly making the winning runs.Overnight and morning rain delayed the start until noon and under leaden skies and on a pitch with a generous covering of grass it was no surprise when Scrivens invited The Blaze, a side dismissed for 135 and 126 in their opening two defeats to bat first.Marie Kelly, out for a duck last time was given an early life when Cordelia Griffith spilt a regulation catch at slip, Hancock the unlucky bowler. Kelly, though, wouldn’t make the most of the reprieve, bowled in Hancock’s next over by one which came back through the gate.Fellow opener Teresa Graves was similarly castled by Kate Coppack eight balls later to leave The Blaze 18 for 2.Daisy Mullan and Nadine de Klerk briefly threatened a fightback, the former driving Hancock straight for four before striking another boundary over the top of mid-off.However, the introduction of spinners Villiers and Grewcock proved decisive. Villiers trapped de Klerk in front before bowling Mullan who had become frustrated, the runs having completely dried up.Grewcock chipped in by piercing wicketkeeper-batter Ella Claridge’s defences and Villiers took her figures to 3 for 3 when fellow England spinner Sarah Glenn tickled one into the gloves of Amara Carr. There would be no recovery from 52 for 6 as Hancock and Coppack returned to clean up the tail, Blaze skipper Kirstie Gordon their only other player to reach double figures.Sunrisers, themselves bowled out for 150 in a heavy defeat to Thunder three days earlier, initially made hard work of the chase.Ariana Dowse was undone by one from Grace Ballinger which kept low, but their next wound was self-inflicted, Griffith setting off for a run which was never there and being run out having been sent back by her skipper.Scrivens and Grewcock calmed any nerves with an increasingly belligerent stand of 40 and though the latter departed before the end Sunrisers romped home.

Lancashire hope CA show 'common sense' on Lyon decision

Star overseas signing only bowls two overs as rain curtails debut

ESPNcricinfo staff and ECB Reporters Network08-Apr-2024Lancashire are hoping that “common sense prevails” in their discussions with Cricket Australia over Nathan Lyon’s availability, after his debut for the county against Surrey was heavily curtailed by the Manchester weather.Lyon initially signed for the whole season but was only made available for seven out of Lancashire’s first nine County Championship fixtures by CA. He was selected as one of two spinners, alongside Tom Hartley, for the opening match but his involvement was restricted to a first-ball duck and two wicketless overs.Asked if Lyon’s cameo would count as one of his seven permitted appearances, Lancashire coach Dale Benkenstein said: “I hope not. We have asked the question and hope common sense prevails. Two overs doesn’t constitute a match. But we are waiting to hear back from Cricket Australia.”Related

Only 81.1 overs were possible across the four days at Emirates Old Trafford. The water table on the ground is very high and heavy overnight rain made the prospects of play on the final day slim even before a further morning shower. Umpires Peter Hartley and Paul Pollard carried out three inspections before finally pulling the plug at 2.15 pm.”It wasn’t ideal but there’s a few grounds [around the country] where it has been worse,” Benkenstein said. “At least we got some play. We got some positives out of it and there were a few areas in which we can do better.”Although there wasn’t a lot of cricket out in the middle, the nets have been great. Everybody’s managed to get a good bowl outside, and there has been a lot of batting in the nets on grass which helps us top up and get ready for the Hampshire game.”Surrey’s coach Gareth Batty praised the performances of Cameron Steel and Dan Lawrence, who took nine first-innings wickets between them. “I think both Cam and Dan are very skilled spinners but because we have a very good seam attack, the spinners don’t always get a go,” Batty said. “They got a go here and they were both quite magnificent.”Having bowled out Lancashire for 202 on Saturday , Surrey took 11 points from the game while Lancashire took eight points. Rory Burns’ team now return home to play Somerset at The Oval in a game starting on Friday while Lancashire’s next match is away at Hampshire, also on Friday.

Man Utd to 'show evidence' to Benjamin Sesko over summer transfer plans as Red Devils ramp up striker pursuit

Manchester United are set to present their long-term striker plans to Benjamin Sesko as they prepare a formal offer for the RB Leipzig star. Sesko is expected to make a final decision in the coming days between the Red Devils and the Magpies.

Transfer guru Fabrizio Romano has reported that Manchester United have informed RB Leipzig of their intention to submit a formal bid for Sesko. The Red Devils are also preparing to present a detailed plan to the player outlining how he fits into their future. Sesko is weighing up proposals from both Manchester United and Newcastle, with the Old Trafford outfit currently in pole position.

The move for Sesko is reportedly being pushed by Manchester United’s head of recruitment, Christopher Vivell, despite manager Ruben Amorim preferring other options. The £64m-rated striker has become the Red Devils' top target following internal disagreements over striker priorities. INEOS sees Sesko as a key piece in their rebuild, and believes he could thrive alongside Rasmus Hojlund.

Sesko is believed to favour a move to Manchester United, with Newcastle still hopeful of swaying the decision. Despite speculation, Hojlund is not expected to leave, and Amorim sees Sesko’s arrival as healthy competition for the Dane, who scored in United's 4-1 win over Bournemouth in a recent friendly and reaffirmed his commitment to the club.

WHAT NEXT FOR SESKO?

Manchester United are expected to submit their official bid in the coming days and present their project directly to Sesko. The striker will then make a final decision between the two Premier League suitors. RB Leipzig are open to selling if the valuation is met, paving the way for a potential transfer before mid-August.

New Zealand have called up batters Georgia Plimmer and Mikaela Greig* into the squad as replacement. While Plimmer has played 12 ODIs and 21 T20Is for New Zealand, Greig is yet to make her international debut. Both Plimmer and Greig will remain in Dunedin after the first T20I and reassemble with the New Zealand A one-day squad ahead of the first 50-over match against England A on Saturday. With Devine and Kerr unavailable, Suzie Bates will lead New Zealand in the opening T20I.”It’s obviously disappointing not to have Melie [Kerr] or Sophie with us for the series opener,” New Zealand head coach Ben Sawyer said. “We’ve known that this could be the case for some time now, so we’ve made plans for all scenarios and the positive is that it gives other players an opportunity to test themselves against a strong England side.”Sawyer also threw his weight behind Plimmer and Greig. “Georgia has been a regular part of our group for some time now and she’ll be involved in the ODIs – so we have full confidence she can come in and contribute in the opening T20I,” he said.”Mikaela has been impressive for the Central Hinds all summer and deserves an opportunity to join the group for the first time. She’s shown this season that she possesses power and hitting ability which are important qualities in T20 cricket and we believe she has the ability to contribute if selected in the XI tomorrow.”England also have four players unavailable for the first three (of five) T20Is because of their WPL commitments. Alice Capsey (Delhi Capitals), Sophie Ecclestone (UP Warriorz), Nat Sciver-Brunt (Mumbai Indians) and Danni Wyatt (Warriorz) will only link up with the squad ahead of the fourth T20I. Kate Cross (RCB) has been named only for the ODI series while Issy Wong (Mumbai Indians) did not find a place in either squad.Lauren Bell (Warriorz) and Heather Knight (RCB) had earlier pulled out of their WPL deals to make themselves available for the entire New Zealand white-ball series since the ECB had told the players involved in the WPL that staying in India until the tournament is complete would mean non-selection for the first three T20Is in New Zealand.New Zealand squad for first T20I vs EnglandSuzie Bates (capt), Bernadine Bezuidenhout (wk), Izzy Gaze (wk), Eden Carson, Maddy Green, Mikaela Greig, Brooke Halliday, Fran Jonas, Jess Kerr, Rosemary Mair, Georgia Plimmer, Hannah Rowe, Lea Tahuhu

Borussia Dortmund target new loan deal for Chelsea's Carney Chukwuemeka amid injury concerns and eye Brighton youngster as Niko Kovac seeks Jamie Gittens replacement

Borussia Dortmund have reignited plans to sign Carney Chukwuemeka on loan from Chelsea this summer as they search for Jamie Gittens' replacement.

According to a report from , Dortmund are keen on signing Chukwuemeka on a loan deal for another season, despite Chelsea's preference to sell the player. Having lost Gittens to the Blues earlier this summer, the Bundesliga giants have also shortlisted Brighton youngster Facundo Buonanotte as another top transfer target ahead of the upcoming season, as they aim to strengthen their attack.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Dortmund are not ready to head into the upcoming season with just Jobe Bellingham and Patrick Drewes as reinforcements. They have examined the market for the best opportunities, and were even close to signing one player, but the club has reached the conclusion that Chukwuemeka stands out as the best option, both from a sporting and a financial perspective. Chelsea value the player at £40 million (€46.5m/$54m), but Dortmund are not willing to match the fee. They will propose a loan deal with an option to sign him permanently next summer due to concerns about his fitness. Head coach Kovac, as well as the club hierarchy, remain confident in the young midfielder's abilities after having him on loan for half a season in 2024-25. Interestingly, BVB could be tempted into purchasing the player rather than bringing him on loan, with the report claiming that the Club World Cup champions could consider offloading the 20-year-old for a cut-price €25m (£21.5m/$29m).

On the other hand, Dortmund have intensified their pursuit of young Argentinian attacking midfielder and winger Buonanotte, who has been impressive for Brighton in the Premier League. French side Lyon have also entered the race to sign Buonanotte, but suggest that the 20-year-old has signalled his intention to opt for a move to Signal Iduna Park.

    WHAT NEXT FOR BORUSSIA DORTMUND?

Their attempts to lure Arsenal wonderkid Ethan Nwaneri failed, with the teenager now close to securing a new deal at the Emirates Stadium. Die Schwarzgelben have been linked with a reunion with Jadon Sancho, but the Manchester United outcast's future remains a mystery. It remains to be seen if they can get deals for both Chukwuemeka and Buonanotte over the line, with the former also finding himself on the radar of Bundesliga rivals RB Leipzig.
