Cummins, Bhuvneshwar help SRH snatch thriller by one run

Cummins bowled a superb 19th over followed by Bhuvneshwar successfully defending 12 in the final over

Sidharth Monga02-May-20242:30

Rapid Fire Review: Rating Nitish Kumar Reddy’s innings

Till the 19th over of the chase, the highest Rajasthan Royals let the asking rate rise to in a 202 chase was 10.88, which was at the end of the first over. And yet, Sunrisers Hyderabad won by one run. Pat Cummins bowled a superb 19th over followed by Bhuvneshwar Kumar successfully defending 12 in the final over despite the over-rate penalty giving them one fewer boundary rider.Even until the last ball, RR remained the favourites, needing two to win, but Rovman Powell missed a calf-high full toss to be out lbw. It was Bhuvneshwar who got their defence to a great start, removing Jos Buttler and Sanju Samson in the first over, but Yashasvi Jaiswal and Riyan Parag made the chase look easy with their fifties. When Jaiswal fell, they needed 67 off 39; when Parag left, they needed 43 off 25. Shimron Hetmyer and Powell looked like cruising it, and then two hits went straight to the fielders, and Cummins swooped in.This was SRH’s fifth score of 200 or more this IPL, but they took the scenic route to get there after choosing to bat. By all accounts, it was a decision informed by their ordinary chasing record and not the conditions. They found themselves having to start off on a sluggish track, which got better as the evening wore off. In fact they themselves scored 153 in their last 12 overs. For the 18 overs of the RR chase, it seemed those first eight overs had cost SRH the game, who now sit among the top four on the points table.RR spot on with the new ballTwo left-hand batters as openers was the ideal match-up for RR. Trent Boult is anyway a new-ball ace, but now they could bowl R Ashwin too. Boult was denied a wicket first ball as Parag dropped Travis Head at backward point, but the two combined to bowl four overs for just 25 runs. After CSK had shut the SRH openers down with a sweeper on the off side in the powerplay, Boult went the other way, placing two men deep on the leg side and denying them any room. Ashwin was particularly unlucky he didn’t have a wicket as he kept beating the bat.Avesh Khan and Sandeep Sharma reaped the harvest as they got Abhishek Sharma and Anmolpreet Singh with the first ball each of them bowled, resulting in the slowest powerplay for SRH this year: 37 runs.Head leads, Reddy followsAfter the first time-out, SRH seemed to have decided the pitch had improved. The intent changed visibly. Yuzvendra Chahal was at the receiving end of it as Head pulled and drove him for sixes. He went from 27 off 27 to get to his fifty in 37 balls. Nitish Kumar Reddy followed suit, converting his 5 off 10 into a 30-ball fifty. Even he was ruthless against Chahal, resulting in the second-worst analysis for a spinner in the IPL and also Chahal’s second-worst figures in all T20 cricket: 4-0-62-0.Reddy, Klaasen close things offNitish Kumar Reddy mixed the orthodox with the unorthodox in an unbeaten 76 off 42•BCCI

Head again hit a bit of a rut after reaching his fifty, which ended with him playing on while trying to ramp a wide yorker. Not before he was reprieved again, this time by the third umpire when his bat was clearly in the air when the wicket was broken. However, the real damage to RR came from Reddy and Heinrich Klaasen. Reddy ruined Ashwin’s neat figures by taking two sixes off his final over. Then Klaasen got stuck into Chahal in the 17th over. The RR bowlers were on point with their plans and execution, and it took improvisation and exceptional hitting from Klaasen to take SRH past 200.Vintage BhuvneshwarBhuvneshwar got the new ball moving, drawing the outside edge from Buttler first ball and going past Samson’s inside edge in the same over. These were his 45th and 46th wickets in the first over in T20 cricket, now only one behind Shaheen Shah Afridi’s 47 and level on joint-top at the IPL with 27.What seemed the perfect chaseBhuvneshwar found swing in the second over too, but it met the broad swinging bat of Parag, who hit him for two fours and a six. This was nonchalant, disdainful hitting. Jaiswal was more respectful but just as powerful. His shot at the start of the fourth over went straight into Cummins’ midriff at mid-off, but the SRH captain dropped it. Then Cummins brought himself on to be hit for two fours and monstrous six over long leg. In the next over, Abhishek Sharma dropped Parag at extra cover. It speaks to the consistency in their hitting that the highest the asking rate hovered around 10.The chaosLike Head, Jaiswal played on a low full toss as he tried to ramp it. Parag pulled the momentum back by hitting a six two balls later. Small things happened in the 16th over that look huge in hindsight. Parag hit a full toss from Cummins straight to short fine leg. Then he got too close to a half-volley, and holed out to long-on. SRH had a wicket and a rare over without a boundary.Powell, though, settled RR’s nerves with 15 off the 17th, bowled by Marco Jansen. Hetmyer started the 18th with a huge six. Two dot balls later, he mis-hit a full toss and the game was refusing to die. Dhruv Jurel nailed a leg-side half-volley from Cummins straight down the throat of deep square leg following which Cummins bowled three straight dots at Powell, who hit the last ball for six to tilt the balance again. After Ashwin handed over the strike to Powell, he used the fielding penalty to take a boundary through the vacant fine-leg region. Poor throws from the outfield allowed Powell take three couples. One more, and it would be over. Perhaps Powell was expecting something close to a yorker because Bhuvneshwar had been nailing them. The full toss took him by surprise, handing RR their first defeat this IPL while chasing.

Tom Banton, James Rew drive Somerset with twin centuries

Aggressive centuries from Tom Banton and James Rew helped Somerset pile up 440 for seven after losing the toss on the opening day of the Vitality County Championship First Division match with Kent at Taunton.Banton contributed a career-best 133, off 174 balls, with 19 fours and two sixes, while Rew stroked his way to 114, off 145 deliveries, with 12 fours and three sixes in a reminder of the form that made him one of the most talked about players in Championship cricket last season. The pair added 205 for the fifth wicket in 42.4 overs. Earlier, Tom Lammonby hit 69 as Kent’s seamers found it tough going on a belting batting surface at the Cooper Associates County Ground. An entertaining morning session ended with Somerset 133 for three from 32 overs. Their innings got off to a poor start when Sean Dickson slashed at a wide ball from Beyers Swanepoel and edged through to wicketkeeper Harry Finch for a fourth-ball duck.Soon Matt Renshaw and Lammonby were making batting look comfortable in warm sunshine, Lammonby striking three fours in a Swanepoel over, two of them to a very short boundary on the motorway side of the ground. The pair brought the fifty up in the 12th over and Renshaw celebrated by pulling a six off George Garrett before, with the total on 75, he fell for 40, caught at mid-on mistiming a drive off the same bowler.Andy Umeed looked in good touch, a glorious straight-driven boundary off Garrett helping to bring the hundred up before Lammonby went to his fifth Championship half-century of the season off 72 balls, with 10 fours. It came as a surprise when, with the total on 116, Umeed edged a defensive shot off Swanepoel straight to Marcus O’Riordan at first slip and departed for 25. Lammonby was unbeaten on 54 at lunch, having been joined by Banton. Both played positively at the start of the afternoon session, taking the score to 172 before Lammonby got a bottom edge onto his stumps, attempting to pull a boundary off Grant Stewart. It proved the only success for the visitors before tea as Rew launched his innings with three fours in quick succession off Garrett, who had to leave the field after two balls of his 11th over, which was completed by Joey Evison.By then Somerset were 209 for four and Kent, without Jack Leaning because of a hand injury, were about to turn to the off-spin of O’Riordan. Rew greeted him with a six over mid-wicket before Banton moved to his third half-century of the summer with his tenth four, off Evison, having faced 79 balls.Rew followed to his second fifty of the season, a fluent effort off 61 balls, and celebrated with a six over long-on off O’Riordan as he overtook his batting partner. Banton responded by clearing the ropes off the same bowler and at tea he was unbeaten on 66, while Rew had contributed 63 to Somerset’s 265 for four. The final session saw Banton survive a sharp chance to backward point off Stewart just after his stand with Rew went to three figures. It was all the good fortune he required to reach a 150-ball ton that meant a huge amount, having worked hard to try and match his early success as a one-day player in red ball cricket.Banton’s only other Championship hundred came as a concussion substitute against Essex at Chelmsford in 2022 and last season he played just one innings in the competition. After celebrating with arms outstretched, he raced past his previous top score of 126. Rew followed him to a hundred with his 12th four, clipped over mid-wicket off Stewart after Kent had taken the second new ball at 349 for four. The left-hander had faced 128 balls, timing the ball sweetly. Banton departed shortly afterwards, caught behind attempting to uppercut a short ball from Stewart.Rew also fell to the new ball, lbw to Evison, falling across his stumps to give Kent a second bowling point. Craig Overton was dismissed for a rapid 23, but Somerset skipper Lewis Gregory was unbeaten on 26 at stumps, having passed 4,000 first class runs.

Yates lays Bears platform before spinners tie Notts in knots

Briggs, Lintott and Mousley share seven wickets as visitors lose all 10 for 73

ECB Reporters Network01-Jun-2024Buoyant Birmingham Bears made it two wins from two in the Vitality Blast after beating Notts Outlaws by 22 runs in front of a 13,784 at Edgbaston.Having trounced Durham in their opening game the previous evening, Bears chose to bat but were bowled out for 149 in 19.3 overs. Rob Yates struck a majestic 68 from 48 balls but nobody else passed 16 as Olly Stone took 3 for 30 and Luke Fletcher harvested an excellent 4-0-20-2.Outlaws then charged to 54 without loss in 35 balls but collapsed to 127 all out against a vastly experienced Bears attack led by Dan Mousley, Hasan Ali, Danny Briggs and Jake Lintott.Heavily beaten by Northants Steelbacks in their first game, Outlaws have more wounds to lick ahead of next Thursday’s home game with Worcestershire Rapids. It was Yates who delivered the match-winning contribution. He lifted his first ball for six and batted regally despite losing partners regularly.Alex Davies and Chris Benjamin flailed briefly, each clearing the ropes with one hit then finding a fielder with another as Tom Moores and Calvin Harrison took smart catches. Sam Hain went to the crease with a Blast average of 97.28 against Outlaws but managed only 16 before chipping a return catch to Matt Montgomery. Mousley drove Lyndon James low to cover.Jake Bethell skied Stone to mid-off. George Garton’s first runs for the Bears were a reverse-lapped six but he added just another single before edging a huge drive at Stone.Among all the frantic bit parts, Yates took centre stage with a measured 37-ball 50 which grew to 68 before he was slickly caught by a diving Jack Haynes at fine leg off Fletcher. The last three wickets – two run outs and an lbw from a failed reverse-sweep – summed up a bitty batting effort. The Outlaws bowlers had earned their batters the luxury of easing through the powerplay without risk and Joe Clarke and Alex Hales exploited the situation to add 50 in the first five overs. Notts were in total command but the departure of Clarke for 28 off 18, who lifted Mousley to extra cover, reversed the flow of the match. Four wickets fell in 21 balls as Haynes drove a return catch to Briggs, Will Young missed a cut at the spinner and was bowled and Hales hoisted Lintott to long-off.A flash of fielding brilliance followed when Bethell took an exceptional diving catch at the extra cover boundary to oust Moores. From 54 without loss and comfortable, Outlaws were 95 for 5 and, much to the delight of the man in the crowd dressed as a carrot, under serious pressure.Montgomery offered some resistance with 33 off 31 but when he edged a reverse sweep at Hasan Ali, the collapsed turned terminal. The Outlaws tail needed to find 26 from the last two overs and didn’t come close. The last word fittingly fell to Yates who took a superb catch at extra cover to bring the crowd, including the man dressed as a carrot, to its feet.

Why Bruno Fernandes labelled his Man Utd team-mates 'lazy' in pre-season draw with Everton

Bruno Fernandes has accused his Manchester United team-mates of being "lazy" during their 2-2 pre-season draw against Everton.

United twice surrendered the lead against Everton on Sunday, and despite winning the Premier League Summer Series, captain Fernandes was unhappy with certain aspects of his side's performance. The Portugal star said his team-mates were too "lazy" off the ball and that nearly cost them.

The former Sporting CP midfielder told NBC, via : "Our performance wasn’t the best off the ball, we were a little bit lazy, and we have to avoid that because the laziness you can pay at any moment."

THE BIGGER PICTURE

Although United beat Bournemouth and West Ham to win the pre-season tournament in the United States, head coach Ruben Amorim echoed some of Fernandes' concerns.

He said: "I think I’m happy for the players to have that feeling. It’s saying that they understand the situation. So it’s a good feeling. I think the momentum of the tour was perfect. We had the weeks to work with a good environment, good feeling and then we go back to Carrington and we are near to start the season. We are going with the feeling that we need to do a lot of things [better]."

As the 40-year-old hinted, the Red Devils will still need to improve if they want to enjoy a successful season after a torrid 2024-25 campaign.

According to , Milan are considering a move for Leicester centre-back Okoli as part of their defensive rebuild. The Serie A giants recently sold Thiaw to Newcastle for €35 million (£30m/$38m) and replaced him with Belgian defender Koni De Winter from Genoa. However, Allegri has decided to switch to a three-man defence, but with just four central defenders – Fikayo Tomori, Matteo Gabbia, Strahinja Pavlovic and De Winter – the club are exploring another signing.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

While Milan’s main transfer focus remains on landing Rasmus Hojlund, the need for defensive depth has grown urgent. Allegri’s tactical shift has increased the demand for rotation options, particularly with a long season ahead. The 23-year-old Italian has impressed in his first year at Leicester following his €14m (£12m/$15m) move from Atalanta, offering experience and physical presence without the hefty price tag of other targets such as Parma’s Giovanni Leoni or Fiorentina’s Pietro Comuzzo, both valued at around €40m (£34m/$43m).

  • TELL ME MORE…

Okoli made 24 appearances for Leicester in the 2024-25 season, finding the net with a header in a 2-2 Premier League draw against Brighton in April. His current contract runs until June 2029, and his interests are represented by the same agency that manages Milan midfielder Samuele Ricci, who joined from Torino this summer. Seen as a realistic and affordable signing, Okoli is being monitored closely as the Rossoneri prepare for their opening fixture.

    WHAT NEXT FOR AC MILAN?

The Rossoneri will kick off their 2025-26 campaign this weekend against Bari in the Coppa Italia first round, and the club are expected to intensify their defensive search before the transfer window closes. If talks progress, Okoli could arrive in time to provide crucial depth for Allegri’s new-look backline.
