Newcastle fans back forward to hit goal trail

Newcastle United supporters have tipped Spanish forward Joselu to hit the goal trail for the club after opening his Magpies account against West Ham United before the international break.

Joselu capped his first Newcastle start with a goal as Rafael Benitez’s side recorded a 3-2 victory over West Ham on August 26.

Many were unsure of whether the 27-year-old could contribute to Newcastle after a fairly disappointing spell at Stoke City, but the forward was bright on his debut last time out.

Dwight Gayle struggled to lead the line for Newcastle in the opening two matches, but Joselu’s size and strength makes him the ideal player to operate in that area of the field.

Newcastle will look to make it back-to-back Premier League wins when they travel to Swansea City this weekend, and the club’s supporters are backing Joselu to continue his impressive start at the Liberty Stadium.

It would be fair to say that Newcastle’s business in the summer transfer market left a lot to be desired, but Joselu could well turn out to be a very smart signing for the Magpies.

In Focus: In demand Dele Alli will show his intentions when he appoints new adviser

According to reports in The Times, Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Dele Alli is wanted by two of the most powerful agents in world football as he looks for a new adviser to see over the next steps in his promising career.

What’s the word, then?

Well, The Times says that the England international split with long-term agent Rob Segal – who he had been with since he was 15 years old – last month, with the world’s leading sports management companies now scrambling for his signature.

The Times says that Jorge Mendes, whose client list includes Jose Mourinho, Cristiano Ronaldo and Bernardo Silva, and Mino Raiola, who has the likes of Manchester United trio Paul Pogba, Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Romelu Lukaku on his books, are both said to be interested despite previously not being interested in recruiting English players.

The report adds that considering both agents have good links with Real Madrid and Barcelona, if Alli does sign up with either it could suggest that he is aiming to join one of the La Liga giants in the future.

Why does everyone want to sign Alli up?

The 21-year-old is a regular for England and has established himself as one of the best players in the Premier League during his time with Tottenham, helping them challenge for the Premier League title in the last two seasons.

Ahead of Saturday’s clash against Swansea City at Wembley, the former MK Dons man has scored 30 goals in 74 English top flight appearances – including 18 in 37 last term – and he has scored some brilliant goals.

The tall attacking midfielder certainly has huge potential and the technical abilities to go on and play for one of the best clubs in the world – something which has obviously been recognised by Mendes and Raiola.

Would it be bad news for Tottenham?

It certainly could be.

While The Times says that Spurs will likely offer Alli a new deal this season even though he has five years left on his current contract, their wage cap and Alli’s potential desire to play for Real Madrid or Barcelona could mean they struggle to keep hold of him – as when Gareth Bale made the move to the Bernabeu previously.

Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy may certainly have a lot to think about in the next 12 months in that regard.

West Ham fans want more from Andy Carroll despite Saturday’s win

West Ham United picked up an absolutely vital three points on Saturday at home to Swansea City, snatching victory right at the death through a Diafra Sakho strike.

The winner broke through a tension at the London Stadium, with the home supporters largely unhappy with the performance of Slaven Bilic’s side.

Against a disciplined and resolute Swansea defence, the Hammers struggled and fans were resigned to a point before Sakho got on the end of Arthur Masauku’s cross.

Both players had been substituted on just 12 minutes prior, with supporters not happy to see Javier Hernandez exit the field and Andy Carroll stay on.

Fans are hoping to see Bilic invest time into Hernandez after his big summer move but the manager has thus far preferred the qualities Carroll brings to the Irons starting eleven. Some are now calling for the English striker to be benched and used as an impact sub rather than start matches.

In Focus: Cenk Tosun has the scoring pedigree to be a hit for Magpies

As reported by The Northern Echo, Newcastle United face a battle if they’re to land one of their top striking targets this January.

What’s the story?

Despite not recruiting heavily in the summer transfer window, the Magpies have competed well in the English Premier League this season. After a poor start they’ve rallied to pick up some impressive results, most recently a draw at home to top-four contenders Liverpool.

Still, they could do with a personnel boost in January and it seems Rafa Benitez has set his sights on one man in particular.

The Northern Echo report that Newcastle are showing heavy interest in signing Besiktas striker Cenk Tosun, having scouted him as recently as the latest international break when he was in action for Turkey.

The paper say that they’ve been tracking the striker for 12 months now.

Despite that, they face strong competition from the likes of Tottenham Hotspur and Crystal Palace if they want to do a deal in January, who both also scouted the striker recently, according to the report.

Is he the man that can become their striking talisman?

[ad_pod id=’leo-vegas’]

Good enough?

Tosun had an excellent season last term, netting 24 goals in all competitions for the Turkish side, including four in UEFA Competition.

This season he’s started in similar good form, scoring five times already, one of which came in the group stages of the Champions League in a shock win away to Portuguese side Porto. He also scored twice for Turkey in a recent World Cup Qualifier.

That demonstrates he has the ability to be a success in the Premier League, especially for a team who are crying out for freshness in attack.

Reported by The Echo to be valued at £16m, he wouldn’t come cheap but with the market more expensive than ever, that could prove to be a bargain for a player who has shown he can perform at the highest level.

Republic of Ireland’s O’Neill plays down talk of revenge for Coleman

Everton right-back Seamus Coleman has been a large part of the Republic of Ireland’s World Cup qualification campaign, but he will be unable to help the nation in this evening’s crucial clash.

The 28-year-old remains on the sidelines with a broken leg, which he suffered against Wales in March.

Neil Taylor was the man to fracture his opponent’s leg in two places during a challenge in Dublin, and the Aston Villa left-back is expected to be in the squad when Wales welcome the Republic of Ireland to Cardiff.

This evening’s game is huge as both teams need to win in order to have a chance of reaching the finals in Russia next year.

Ireland boss Martin O’Neill has played down suggestions that his team will be out for revenge when they line up against Chris Coleman’s men tonight, but he Coleman will not be far from the players’ minds.

The Telegraph quotes the ex-Villa boss as saying:

“I don’t know about talk of revenge, but certainly, the view among the players, is that if Russia is available to us, then he would very much be in the forefront of our thoughts. He has been a class player, a world class player and he has been essential for us.”

Everton fans left fuming at Ashley Williams after Leicester performance

Ronald Koeman may be gone but Everton fans were offered no respite from poor results on Sunday as their fell to a 2-0 defeat away to Leicester City.

David Unsworth has been charged with bringing stability to the club while decision makers consider who should be appointed permanently but he couldn’t inspire his side to a result despite a spirited second half performance.

By half-time though Leicester had already surged to a two-goal lead thanks to Jamie Vardy and Demarai Gray and Everton’s under fire defence have come in for more criticism as a result.

Fans are particularly unhappy with 33-year-old Ashley Williams, who failed to cope with the pace and threat of Leicester’s attack.

The Toffees defence is now seen as a big priority heading into the January transfer window, with the next permanent manager at Goodison Park having to stem the tide of goals conceded. Only Crystal Palace have conceded more in the league this season so far.

In Focus: Arsenal midfielder Wilshere heading for La Liga

According to The Sun, Real Betis are confident that they have won the race to sign Arsenal midfielder Jack Wilshere on a free transfer at the end of the season.

What’s the story?

Wilshere will see his Arsenal deal expire at the end of June, and with no breakthrough in contract talks, the future of the 25-year-old is up for discussion.

The Englishman has worked his way back into the first-team picture at Arsenal, although he has not started a single Premier League match this term, and was also left out of the latest England squad despite a number of withdrawals.

It is thought that the midfielder will leave Arsenal following the expiration of his contract, and according to The Sun, Betis are confident that they will bring Wilshere to La Liga.

The report claims that 34-time England international is open to a move to Spain, with a deal set to be agreed when the January transfer window opens for business.

Will he really leave on a free?

Wilshere, who is valued at £13.5m by tranfermarkt.co.uk, will be free to discuss terms with foreign clubs at the start of 2018 as he enters the final six months of his contract with Arsenal.

There is a situation where Betis could look to agree a cut-price deal with Arsenal in January in order to secure the midfielder’s signature for the second half of the season.

However, the La Liga outfit are said to be keen to tie Wilshere to a pre-contract agreement, which would see the midfielder move to Spain once his Arsenal deal expires on June 30.

Wilshere has made over 150 appearances for Arsenal, but he was sent on loan to Bournemouth last term, and is said to favour a move abroad in order to boost his England chances ahead of the 2018 World Cup.

It would be some sign of intent from Betis, who have made a solid start to their domestic campaign.

Arsenal fans slate "useless" Jack Wilshere following Europa League defeat

Just weeks after praising Jack Wilshere for his impressive performances in the Europa League, Arsenal fans have changed their minds and condemned the Englishman following Arsenal’s defeat to Koln in the Europa League.

Despite clinching top spot in their Europa league group thanks to BATE Borisov holding Red Star Belgrade to a draw, it was a hugely disappointing night in Germany.

Arsene Wenger’s team failed to establish a rhythm and were undone by a Koln side who sit bottom of the Bundesliga with just two points from 12 games.

One player in particular who underperformed on the night was Jack Wilshere, who is slowly making his way back into the Arsenal team following injury troubles.

Despite previous positive performances in the Europa League, the 25-year-old was very poor on the night and his performance summed up the entire lacklustre performance from the Gunners.

After the game, Arsenal fans were quick to condemn the midfielder, who is valued at £13.5million by Transfermarkt, and insist he may not be good enough for the club…

Three Rangers selection dilemmas Graeme Murty must get right to make it three-in-a-row

After a dramatic week behind-the-scenes at Ibrox, Saturday’s encounter is an important one for Rangers. A win over Ross County would be just the thing to put the Derek McInnes saga behind them and concentrate on what is an exceptionally busy December.

Graeme Murty at least knows he will be in charge until the new year at the earliest and that allows him to plan in advance for six matches that will go a long way to determining just what the Light Blues can hope to achieve in the Scottish Premiership this season.

After picking up two exceptional wins over Aberdeen over the past couple of weeks, the club find themselves second in the table and on the brink of reaching an important milestone that has plagued them throughout 2017. Rangers haven’t won three matches in a row since last December, a record that fans believe has become a psychological block stopping them from winning consistently.

To pick up this vital win though, Murty must get things right and he has some important questions to consider when selecting Saturday’s team. These are the THREE dilemmas facing the interim boss…

Risking Bruno Alves or trusting David Bates?

Bruno Alves has had a frustrating time of it recently at Rangers. After serving a suspension and being benched in the wake of Pedro Caixinha’s departure, he had back issues that kept him out of action in the following two matches.

He returned for the Light Blues’ phenomenal 3-0 victory over Aberdeen at Ibrox but then suffered a knee injury in the build-up to the next encounter at Pittodrie.

Graeme Murty confirmed he returned to training this week, but selecting him for the match against Ross County could be seen as a risk when he’s picking up a number of niggling injuries.

The positives of course is that he’s a much more dependable and composed option than the alternatives. With Ross McCrorie moving into midfield, Murty would likely have to call upon David Bates to fill in for the Portuguese, a player who doesn’t have extensive first team experience. The 21-year-old was impressive away to the Dons, but can he cope with the pressure of playing at Ibrox in a game that they simply need to win?

Who should replace Ryan Jack?

Ryan Jack will serve a three-match suspension this month after picking up a red card in Sunday’s away win against Aberdeen and Graeme Murty must get his replacement in the starting eleven spot on.

The interim manager has opted to field a diamond midfield recently and changing that shape seems unnecessary despite Ryan Jack’s injury. But with Graeme Dorrans still sitting on the sidelines through injury, who should he turn to?

The outstanding candidate to replace Jack is Jamie Barjonas, a player who has started just one match this season and hasn’t featured at all since October. Despite a lack of opportunities, the 18-year-old has bags of potential and has impressed supporters with his energetic displays when he has featured.

With Jack out, Saturday presents a great opportunity for the youngster on Saturday and if he performs well, he’ll know that the prospect of getting starts in the coming weeks is on the cards due to the three-match suspension.

That motivation could be crucial in what will be a tough match against the Highlanders and Murty must place his faith in him.

Is it time to re-introduce Alfredo Morelos?

After a free-scoring start to his Rangers career, Alfredo Morelos’ impact on Scottish football hasn’t been quite as explosive as many predicted. He hasn’t managed to find the net since way back in September and increasingly poor performances led to many fans calling for him to be dropped for the games against Aberdeen.

The stars aligned with their hopes and although he wasn’t dropped outright, he did miss the first match against the Dons with a hip injury and failed to prove his fitness to start at Pittodrie, spending the entire game on the bench. That time out of the team may have served him well and he’ll have a point to prove if he returns to Saturday’s starting eleven.

It’s not a formality he’ll play;Josh Windass has added a fresh look to the Rangers attack and Kenny Miller is reliable and always a leader on the pitch. The time appears to be right though for the Colombian to come back and show just why everyone was so excited about him in the early stages of the season.
