Tickner stretchered off after shoulder injury

New Zealand fast bowler Blair Tickner, their standout performer on the opening day of the second Test in Wellington, suffered a suspected dislocation of his left shoulder and was taken off the field on a stretcher.Tickner had earlier torn through West Indies’ batting with a four-wicket haul, but injured himself in the 67th over while attempting to prevent a boundary at fine leg. Chasing a flick from Tevin Imlach, he dived full-length near the rope and stayed down immediately, prompting concern from his team-mates. The medical staff from the New Zealand camp and the venue attended to him on the boundary edge before he was stretchered off – sitting upright – to warm applause from the Basin Reserve crowd.”He [Tickner] left the field with a left shoulder injury and was transported to hospital shortly afterwards,” NZC said in a release. “Once the medical team and local doctors have done their work with him an update will be fed back.”Related

  • Henry, Santner, Nathan Smith ruled out of rest of WI Test series

Playing his first Test since early 2023, Tickner had been drafted into the XI for this match after injuries to Matt Henry and Nathan Smith in Christchurch. His 4 for 32 from 16 overs made him comfortably New Zealand’s best bowler on the day. His injury, however, adds to an already lengthy list of unavailable fast bowlers this series, which includes Ben Sears, Will O’Rourke and Matt Fisher.New Zealand are now facing the prospect of losing a third fast bowler mid-Test this series. They were similarly reduced in Christchurch, which had a knock-on effect and allowed West Indies to bat out for a draw. The setback also dampened the mood at the Basin Reserve among the fans and the New Zealand players, following what had been an upbeat second and third sessions for the hosts. Before being forced off, Tickner trapped Brandon King (33) and Kavem Hodge (0) lbw, used a sharp bouncer to dismiss Shai Hope for 48, and uprooted Roston Chase’s leg stump to put New Zealand firmly in control.Should Tickner be ruled out of the remainder of the match, it would be a major blow to an already inexperienced seam attack of Jacob Duffy, Zak Foulkes and debutant Michael Rae. Remarkably, New Zealand’s top two wicket-takers in the Test so far are part-timers Glenn Phillips (31 Test wickets) and Kane Williamson (30).This Test is also New Zealand’s first in 13 years where they have fielded a seam-bowling unit with fewer than 50 career Test wickets between them – the last instance coming in Kingston in 2012, the match in which Trent Boult, Tim Southee and Neil Wagner first played together.

Maphaka ruled out of Namibia T20I and Pakistan tour with hamstring injury

Ottneil Baartman will replace him for T20Is against Namibia and Pakistan, while Lizaad Williams has been included in the ODI squad for Pakistan

ESPNcricinfo staff09-Oct-2025Fast bowler Kwena Maphaka has been ruled out of South Africa’s one-off T20I against Namibia and the white-ball tour of Pakistan because of a hamstring strain.Ottneil Baartman has been named as replacement for the T20I, scheduled for October 11. He has also been included in the T20I squad for the three-match series against Pakistan later this month. Lizaad Williams, who is already part of the T20I squad, has been added to the ODI squad for the Pakistan series. As reported by ESPNcricinfo, Maphaka had an injury scare while playing for Lions against Western Province in a four-day domestic match at Newlands last week. He bowled 5.5 overs in the first innings but had to leave the field with hamstring discomfort. He was taken for a scan which revealed no major damage and returned to take the new ball in the second innings. His 3 for 26 in ten overs led Lions’ charge to victory by an innings and 134 runs. However, CSA later stated that “subsequent scans and medical assessments revealed a grade 1-2 injury, and he will undergo rehabilitation over the next four weeks”.South Africa’s long tour of Pakistan begins with two Tests from October 12, followed by three T20Is from October 28 and as many ODIs that will conclude on November 8.South Africa’s squad for Namibia T20IDonovan Ferreira (capt), Nandre Burger, Gerald Coetzee, Quinton de Kock, Bjorn Fortuin, Reeza Hendricks, Rubin Hermann, Rivaldo Moonsamy, Nqaba Peter, Lhuan-dre Pretorius, Andile Simelane, Jason Smith, Lizaad Williams, Ottneil BaartmanSouth Africa’s squad for Pakistan T20IsDavid Miller (capt), Corbin Bosch, Dewald Brevis, Nandre Burger, Gerald Coetzee, Quinton de Kock, Donovan Ferreira, Reeza Hendricks, George Linde, Lungi Ngidi, Nqaba Peter, Lhuan-dre Pretorius, Andile Simelane, Lizaad Williams, Ottneil BaartmanSouth Africa’s squad for Pakistan ODIsMatthew Breetzke (capt), Corbin Bosch, Dewald Brevis, Nandre Burger, Gerald Coetzee, Quinton de Kock, Tony de Zorzi, Donovan Ferreira, Bjorn Fortuin, George Linde, Lizaad Williams, Lungi Ngidi, Nqaba Peter, Lhuan-dre Pretorius, Sinethemba Qeshile

Bernard Julien, the former West Indies allrounder, died at the age of 75 on Saturday in Valsayn, a town in Northern Trinidad. He was part of the 1975 world champions and represented the region across 24 Tests and 12 ODIs.At the inaugural ODI World Cup, now 50 years ago, Julien produced a spell of 4 for 20 against Sri Lanka in the group stage and followed it up with 4 for 27 against New Zealand in the semi-final and a cameo of 26 off 37 balls against Australia in the final. The tournament encapsulated his reputation as a swashbuckling allrounder known for his left-arm seam bowling, his strokeplay and lively fielding.Clive Lloyd, the former West Indies captain, hailed Julien as a vital member of the 1975 champions. “He always gave you over 100 percent. He never shirked his duties, and I could always rely on him with bat and ball. He gave his all every time. What a fine cricketer,” Lloyd was quoted as saying by the Trinidad & Tobago Guardian.Julien enjoyed another high point at Lord’s, where he scored his first Test century, a match-winning 121 against England in 1973. He picked up a five-for against the same opposition the next year.”We all had total respect for him,” Lloyd said. “He enjoyed himself and was loved by everyone around. I remember we won the Test match at Lords and stood there and signed autographs for a long time, He was good for us and was held in high regard everywhere we went.”Julien also played for Kent between 1970 and 1977, but his career came to a halt when he joined a rebel West Indies side that toured South Africa during the apartheid era in 1982-83.”As we honour Bernard Julien, we also recognise the importance of reflection and inclusion. The time has come to view that chapter of our history not through exclusion but through understanding,” Dr Kishore Shallow, the President of Cricket West Indies, said in an official statement.”To the family, friends, and loved ones of Bernard Julien, we extend our deepest condolences. His passing reminds us that a life devoted to purpose never truly leaves us. Cricket West Indies stands with you in this moment of loss, and we hope Bernard knew he was valued and loved by the cricketing family he helped to shape, and that he found peace knowing his contribution will always endure.”

Kim Hellberg now in London as Swansea advance move to hire Hammarby manager

Hammarby manager Kim Hellberg has now travelled to the UK to hold talks with Swansea City about taking their vacant managerial role, with the Championship side advancing their move during the international break.

Since making the decision to sack Alan Sheehan, Swansea have been linked with moves for a number of names with Hellberg at the very top of their list. Alongside the 37-year-old, former Middlesbrough boss Michael Carrick has been linked with the job, whilst Russell Martin is reportedly open to making an unexpected return.

The former Swansea manager has endured a couple of years to forget in the dugout, having been sacked by Southampton in the Premier League and then by Rangers as one of their most unsuccessful managers of all time. Now, he desperately needs his next move to go well.

The Swans could also do with getting things right after sacking Sheehan. They currently sit 18th and seven points above the dropzone. Get things wrong and they face the risk of falling into a relegation battle this season.

With Middlesbrough and Norwich City also on the hunt for new managers, Swansea must also act fast if they are to secure their top managerial target. The last thing they want to do is miss their stop on the managerial merry-go-round in the Championship.

In an ideal world, those in Wales will have their top candidate through the door by the end of the international break and in time to face Bristol City on November 22. Whether that candidate will be Carrick, Martin or Hellberg is the big question.

Swansea advance Hellberg move

According to Sky Sports’ Anthony Joseph, Hellberg has now travelled to hold talks with Swansea and is now in London as the Wales-based side look to advance their move for the Hammarby boss.

All signs are pointing towards the 37-year-old becoming the next Swansea manager as things stand, although things could still change. And if it is to be the Swede, then those in Wales will be welcoming yet another young manager.

Hellberg has only ever managed two clubs, with his time in Hammarby particularly standing out as a success. It’s there that he has maintained a points per game record of 1.89 across 73 games in charge to take his side into the top two of the Allsvenskan.

The Championship is another challenge entirely, but it’s not the first time that Swansea have thought outside the box when it comes to hiring a manager. They, of course, hired a young Graham Potter in 2018 after he left Swedish club Ostersunds FK.

Crystal Palace identify Ezri Konsa as new target amid Marc Guehi uncertainty

Crystal Palace have now identified Aston Villa defender Ezri Konsa as a target, amid the uncertainty surrounding Marc Guehi’s future at Selhurst Park.

Guehi was expected to leave Palace in the summer transfer window, with the captain’s move to Liverpool falling through on deadline day, but he has remained a consummate professional, most recently putting in a stellar performance at Anfield.

Indeed, the centre-back was solid at the back as the Eagles progressed to the EFL Cup quarter-final with a 3-0 victory against Liverpool on Wednesday night, making five interceptions and two tackles to help his side pick up a clean sheet.

The south Londoners will have their work cut out in the next round, however, having been handed arguably the most difficult tie possible, with Oliver Glasner’s side set to travel to Premier League leaders Arsenal in the week commencing on the 15th of December.

Should Crystal Palace manage to defy the odds and add the EFL Cup to their trophy cabinet, there may be some feint hope that Guehi will pen a new deal, but his future remains very much in doubt, with Liverpool and Real Madrid eyeing moves.

Crystal Palace join race for Ezri Konsa

As such, Glasner is likely to be tasked with bringing in a replacement for the 25-year-old, and Crystal Palace have now joined the race for Aston Villa defender Konsa, who is attracting interest from a plethora of Premier League clubs.

Liverpool, Chelsea, Tottenham Hotspur and Newcastle United have also expressed an interest in the centre-back, as there is now a feeling that Villa may be forced to cash-in, given their need to comply with PSR regulations.

The Villans are extremely reluctant to sell the 28-year-old, as he is one of their key players, but if they have to sanction a departure, it is suggested they will look to hold out for between £40m – £45m.

The Englishman has started to establish himself at international level, having amassed 16 caps for the Three Lions, with teammate Luke Shaw being left very impressed by his performance in the Euro 2024 quarter-final against Switzerland.

No Palace fan will want to see Guehi leave, but if the 25-year-old does move on, it would make sense to bring in a replacement who is proven in the Premier League, and the Villa star fits the bill, having now made 205 top-flight appearances.

Last season, the former Brentford man also cut his teeth in the Champions League, scoring the Villans’ third goal as they nearly completed a dramatic comeback against Paris Saint-Germain.

Konsa’s top-level experience could make him the ideal heir to Guehi, but it could be difficult to win the race for his signature, amid interest from some top clubs.

Gerrit Cole Intentionally Walks Rafael Devers With Bases Empty in Yankees-Red Sox

New York Yankees starting pitcher Gerrit Cole showed Boston Red Sox slugger—and infamous foil—Rafael Devers the ultimate respect during Saturday's game at Yankee Stadium.

The first time Devers, who has historically enjoyed immense success against Cole in his career, stepped up to the plate, he was hit by Cole. With one out and nobody on in the top of the third inning, Devers stepped up to the plate for his second at-bat, and Cole had zero interest in pitching to him.

In the ultimate sign of respect, Cole signaled for an intentional walk of Devers, who seemed just as surprised as everyone else watching.

Devers ended up stealing second base and scoring on a double as Boston produced three runs in the inning.

As it turns out, Cole was probably correct to walk Devers in the situation. Up a third time with the bases loaded in the fifth inning, Devers laced a two-run single into right field, continuing his success against Cole.

In his career against Cole, Devers owns a 1.370 OPS with eight home runs, a double and 20 RBI. And Cole is certainly aware of the Red Sox third baseman's success against him.

On Hispanic Heritage Day on Tuesday, Cole was asked which Latin hitter has given him the most trouble in his career.

Cole exited the game after 4 1/3 innings pitched, surrendering seven earned runs to Boston.

Fisher, Clark share six to put Surrey on top in Worcester

Surrey’s bowlers dominated day one of the Rothesay County Championship clash against Worcestershire, as Matt Fisher’s 3 for 34 helped bundle the hosts out for 209.A middle-order collapse saw the bottom-side in Division One slip to 87 for 5, after both Jake Libby and Henry Nicholls made starts at Visit Worcestershire New Road. Jordan Clark impressed with three wickets of his own, as Matthew Waite dug in for a resilient 68 in an otherwise underwhelming batting display from the hosts.Dom Sibley and Ryan Patel batted through the remaining 15 overs of the day, as Surrey closed the day 47 for 0 and took charge of the contest. The visitors returned to four-day action in a hurry, as Fisher trapped Gareth Roderick lbw in the 10th over of the morning – the first of his three wickets on the day in an eye-catching bowling display.Stand-in Worcestershire captain Libby came together with Nicholls to add 47 for the second wicket, before Surrey struck twice in five balls to leave the home side 70 for 3 at lunch. Worcestershire’s batting unit continued to struggle early in the afternoon session, when Fisher removed Nicholls for 31, before the impressive Clark pinned Hose lbw, as Surrey took control of proceedings.Ethan Brookes and Waite joined forces, with their side in some peril at 87 for 5, but raised the 100 in the 43rd over of the day, shortly before Brookes was given a reprieve when he was dropped at gully still in single figures. The pair accumulated 31 for the sixth wicket, when former Worcestershire man Nathan Smith traded wickets with Mitchell Santner, as Surrey’s bowlers continued to press on. Signing a one-game extension to enable his participation in this fixture, Santner showed all his class, returning figures of 1 for 38 from 15 overs as he bowled with expert control throughout.Waite brought up a defiant fifty just after tea, facing 77 balls on the way to reaching his third half-century of the season, scoring six boundaries in his standalone innings.Fisher returned to remove Ben Allison cheaply, before Fateh Singh joined Waite, as the pair came together to add a valuable 45 for the ninth wicket, before Waite held out to Dan Lawrence at long-on.After wrapping up the Worcestershire innings for 209, Surrey openers Sibley and Patel made their way to the middle with 15 overs remaining in the day. Despite catching a nasty blow on the arm from a rising Jacob Duffy short ball late on, Patel batted with great temperament, as he and Sibley saw their side through to stumps unscathed, trailing by 162 runs with all ten wickets in hand heading into the second morning.

Alisha Lehmann claims she 'only drank non-alcoholic beer' at Oktoberfest after wild photos with Como team-mates go viral

Alisha Lehmann insists she "only drank non-alcoholic beer" when her and her Como team-mates headed to Oktoberfest in Germany. The entire squad were bedecked in traditional Bavarian clothing, and Lehmann was seen downing a huge stein, although she insists the liquid inside it was not liable to leave her tipsy.

Lehmann's wild night out

Lehmann headed with her Como team-mates to Oktoberfest in Munich, ahead of the start of the 2025/26 season. The former Aston Villa and Juventus star now plays for Como and she enjoyed some team bonding at the world-famous beer festival. She was even spotted downing a huge stein of amber liquid, although she has now insisted that it was not an alcoholic beverage.

AdvertisementGetty Images SportLehmann's explanation

Lehmann said at a press conference: "I only drank non-alcoholic beer! But it was really nice. I had never been to Oktoberfest."

Earlier this month, Lehmann's new employers played her former employers, Juventus, and won 1-0.

She added: “Como will grow again in the coming years. The win against my old club, Juve, was amazing and really did me good. I'll never say anything wrong. I had a good year. I am now a regular starter (editor’s note, three times in the league since the beginning of the exercise), and playing is the main reason why we play football. Como also has a really interesting project in women’s football.”

She added: “I feel good in Como. This is the perfect place for me and, certainly, the most beautiful place I have ever lived. I live right by the lake, and it's absolutely beautiful. I even met a few celebrities, because we go to the same restaurants. But it’s nice here, because everyone respects each other enormously.”

Lehmann's off-pitch fun

Como have allowed Lehmann to head out on multiple extracurricular activities and she even represented Como at Milan Fashion Week.

Como said in a social media post alongside images of Lehmann and Co modelling new threads: “F.C Como Women steps into Prada World at Milan Fashion Week. After a styling session at Nike’s headquarters, @alexckerr, @alishalehmann7, @ramona__ramirez stepped into the Prada event wearing pieces from our FC Como Women essentials line, our @art_of capsule collection and our 25/26 away jersey. We’d like to thank Prada and Nike for this incredible experience. A moment that highlighted women in football who feel free to express themselves on and off the pitch.”

100% dribbles & 100% duels: 8/10 Arsenal star just outshone Eze & Trossard

They’re through to the next round of the League Cup, but last night’s performance was hardly an impressive one from Arsenal.

Mikel Arteta’s side travelled to League One side Port Vale and would have been hoping for a hefty win to bolster morale.

However, the North Londoners had to settle for a goal in each half and not many clear-cut scoring chances.

That said, there were still a few players who put in some good performances, including one who outshone Eberechi Eze and Leandro Trossard.

Eze & Trossard's displays

With Gabriel Martinelli out on the left, Eze had the chance to start a game from the midfield for Arsenal last night, and he certainly made an impact.

It was the former Crystal Palace star who opened the scoring with a delicate finish in the middle of the penalty area in the eighth minute – his first goal since joining the club.

He should have really added a second in the closing stages of the first half, but it was a good stop from the Port Vale keeper that denied him a brace.

The Englishman had some more good moments here and there, but was eventually replaced by Declan Rice in the 81st minute.

However, it was the other change at that time which was far more consequential for the Gunners, as Trossard came on for Martinelli.

It didn’t take long for the Belgian star to make his mark, as in the 85th minute, he latched onto the end of a great long ball from William Saliba, drove across the box and drilled home a low shot to the keeper’s right.

In all, both Eze and Trossard were able to stamp their authority on the game through their goals, but there was another starter who was arguably even better.

The Arsenal star who outshone Eze & Trossard

So, while the overall performance left a lot to be desired, there were still a few players who looked decent, such as Saliba in defence or Max Dowman and Viktor Gyokeres when they came off the bench.

Chalkboard

Football FanCast’s Chalkboard series presents a tactical discussion from around the global game.

However, in this instance, we are referring to the exceptionally talented Myles Lewis-Skelly.

It was the Englishman’s first start of the season, and were Riccardo Calafiori not in such incredible form himself, we’d argue he’d deserve another start at the weekend off of last night.

The Hale Ender did practically everything right, and while he didn’t score a goal, he was involved in Eze’s opener, getting the faintest of touches on the ball from Martinelli.

On top of that attacking contribution, he seemed to have the better of Port Vale’s attackers whenever they came down his side, be it through his surprising strength or brilliant timing.

While this all might sound a little hyperbolic, we were not the only ones impressed, as the Metro’s Liam Grace awarded the teenager an 8/10 match rating at full-time, writing that it was a ‘really strong performance.’

Unsurprisingly, the Hale Ender’s statistics more than justify the praise.
