Bracey 96 trumps Handscomb century as Gloucestershire hold on

Rookie batter Tommy Boorman compiles match-winning 38 as hosts hold their nerve

ECB Reporters Network supported by Rothesay10-Aug-2025Rookie batter Tommy Boorman compiled a superb match-winning innings of 38 not out under intense pressure to carry Gloucestershire to an impressive three-wicket victory over Leicestershire in the Metro Bank One Day Cup at the Seat Unique Stadium, Bristol.Making only his third List-A appearance, Boorman struck two fours and two sixes and staged an unbroken eighth-wicket stand of 35 in 18 balls with Craig Miles, who helped himself to a brace of sixes in making 18 not out as Gloucestershire reached their victory target of 286 with nine balls to spare.Gloucestershire appeared to be cruising when James Bracey compiled an eye-catching 96 from 106 balls and staged an opening stand of 105 with Cameron Bancroft, who contributed 40. But seamer Alex Green turned the tide back in Leicestershire’s favour, taking 5-52, dismissing both openers and dangermen Ben Charlesworth and Jack Taylor to set up a tense finale.Peter Handscomb could count himself unlucky to finish on the losing side, Leicestershire’s skipper raising a brilliant 107 from 125 balls with nine fours and a six and sharing in a substantial partnership of 115 for the fifth wicket with Ben Cox, who contributed a run-a-ball 61, as the Foxes recovered from 76 for 4 to post 285 for 7.Liam Trevaskis produced a hard-hitting 30 not out as the visitors added 61 runs in the final five overs, but Gloucestershire seamer Josh Shaw excelled with the new ball, returning figures of 3 for 40 to keep last season’s beaten semi-finalists in check.Gloucestershire’s decision to bowl first was justified when Shaw claimed 3 for 20 with the new ball to reduce the Foxes to 22 for 3. The Yorkshireman bowled Rishi Patel between bat and pad without scoring, had Sol Budinger held at deep third via a top-edged cut and then had Lewis Hill caught at the wicket in the act of cutting, at which point he had dismantled Leicestershire’s top order in the space of 15 deliveries from the Ashley Down Road end.Having mustered just three boundaries in the powerplay, the visitors were under duress in the face of variable bounce on a slow pitch. But Shan Masood and Handscomb effected a partial recovery, staging an important alliance of 54 in 13.3 overs. The fourth-wicket partnership was beginning to flourish when Ben Charlesworth made a breakthrough with his first ball, persuading Pakistan Test captain Masood to top-edge a pull shot to deep fine leg and depart for 35 with the score 76 for 4 in the 19th.That was as good as it got for Gloucestershire. New batter Cox looked to disrupt the home side’s smooth progress from the outset, clearing the rope behind square for the first six of the innings when Matt Taylor dropped short as the Foxes reached halfway on 113 for 4.The batters managed to get on top for the first time against spinners Ollie Price and Jack Taylor, Handscomb and Cox combining excellent running between the wickets and clever placement in raising a 50 partnership from 57 balls. Averaging a half-century every four innings in List-A cricket, Handscomb went to his 42nd fifty from 76 balls, while Cox attained the same landmark via 45 deliveries with five fours and a six.Gloucestershire needed a wicket and Akhter obliged, bowling Cox to terminate a partnership that had revitalised Leicestershire. Cox had scored a run-a-ball 61 and helped establish a platform from which the visitors could launch a late assault.Matt Taylor removed Ian Holland cheaply, but there was no shifting Handscomb, the Australian going to his ninth List-A hundred by launching Akhter over long-off for six. He received staunch support from Liam Trevaskis with a quickfire unbeaten 30 from 22 deliveries in a valuable seventh-wicket alliance of 51 in 35 balls as the Foxes smashed 61 runs in the final five overs.Gloucestershire openers Bracey and Bancroft were initially circumspect in the face of the new-ball threat. But Bracey soon warmed to his task, greeting Tom Scriven with a pick-up for six over midwicket and a pull for four next ball as the home side advanced to 47 without loss at the end of 10 overs. So dominant was Bracey, that Bancroft contributed just seven runs to the 50 partnership.Bracey went to an authoritative half-century from 58 deliveries, reaching that landmark with his ninth four, causing Handscomb to turn to spin. The opening partnership had realised three figures before the Foxes made the breakthrough they so desperately needed, Bancroft edging a catch behind off Chris Wright in the 20th over.Ollie Price proved adept at rotating the strike thereafter and Gloucestershire were well-placed on 134 for 1 at the halfway stage, requiring a further 152 at 6.1 an over. These two posted a 50 partnership from 65 balls, but Price fell for 29, hitting Green straight to Handscomb at midwicket.Green then struck a telling blow, having Bracey held at deep square leg, at which point Gloucestershire still needed 108 to win with two new batters at the crease. Charlesworth hit a quickfire 19, only to succumb to a leg-side strangle as Green made another important intervention.Sensing an opportunity, Leicestershire kept up the pressure and Trevaskis dismissed Joe Phillips for 14 to further reduce the home side, still 61 short of their target with nine overs remaining.Boorman helped himself to a six and a four off Holland, but Gloucestershire’s task was made harder when Green accounted for Jack Taylor and Akhter with successive deliveries in the 46th over.Miles hit a straight six off Green and Boorman repeated the feat off Trevaskis as the eighth wicket pair held their nerve. Miles hit the winning six in the penultimate over.

Leeds paid ex-star more than £1m as a teenager, he's now made Thorp Arch return

A Leeds United player who the club made a millionaire at a young age has returned to the club.

Leeds’ youngest ever players

The Whites have had some brilliant teenagers come through their Thorp Arch academy in recent years, with Harry Gray the latest youth product who looks destined for a regular first-team role.

The forward, younger brother of Archie, made his senior debut for Leeds on the day they sealed their return to the Premier League in a 6-0 win over Stoke City.

At the age of 16 years, 6 months and 13 days, Gray is in the top five of Leeds’ youngest ever players, with club legend Peter Lorimer top of the charts after debuting as a 15-year-old.

Talking about Gray earlier in 2025, Daniel Farke said the teenage forward has the “confidence” and the “skills” to make it as a Leeds player.

“So he definitely has this confidence that you need but it’s also important to channel this a little bit and not to raise expectations too high. He is doing right now his first steps in senior level.

“He has many skills and we like his potential and professionalism. And how humble he behaves – with a few exceptions.

“But that’s totally OK, it would be a pity if your young players were not self confident. But we have to make sure he is not overdoing this. There is a long way to go, he has many things where he needs to improve.”

Another former Leeds youngster, Aaron Lennon, is a previous success story of the Whites academy, and he has made a return to the club.

Aaron Lennon back at Leeds after becoming teen millionaire

Lennon, a teenage winger at Leeds between 2003 and 2005, made 43 appearances for the first-team prior to joining Tottenham Hotspur for a reduced fee following the financial troubles at Elland Road.

Lennon, who actually made approximately £1.37m in his time at Elland Road from wages and bonuses, admitted his Leeds contract was “silly”, with “crazy numbers” that ultimately impacted his playing time.

“My contract was silly looking back. It was crazy numbers, and they were thinking he won’t play. But then I started playing. I was on the bench, and they couldn’t put me on because I was going to hit one of those appearances.”

“I remember Gary Kelly going mad and saying our best player is on the bench now. Our most in-form winger is on the bench. I was just sat there, and Leeds fans were singing my name.

“At the end of the season, Ken Bates told me ‘you are done at this club’ because of the money. It wasn’t even in a nice way. And I was like, ‘this is my hometown’. I was upset, and I remember going away and got the call saying they have accepted a bid, ‘you are going Tottenham’.”

It emerged last month that Lennon, now 38, has made a return to Leeds in a coaching role for the U18s, working with Rob Etherington and Alex Purver.

Jonny Howson also made the move back to Leeds after leaving Middlesbrough over the summer, helping the U21 in both a playing and coaching capacity.

Trophy-laden manager open to Nottingham Forest talks after being spotted with Marinakis

Nottingham Forest owner Evangelos Marinakis was spotted close to a trophy-laden manager recently, and the tactician is now reportedly open to talks over replacing Ange Postecoglou at the City Ground.

Nottingham Forest consider Ange Postecoglou replacements after poor start

Postecoglou’s tenure at Forest has been nothing short of a nightmare so far, putting the Australian’s future at the club under intense scrutiny.

Appointed with the aim of instilling a vibrant, attacking style, Postecoglou instead finds himself navigating a storm of poor results, mounting criticism, and growing fan unrest just weeks into his reign.

Since taking charge, Postecoglou has become the first permanent Forest manager in over a century to go six games without a win. His side have struggled to translate his high-intensity, possession-based philosophy into results, often appearing disjointed and lacking cohesion on the pitch.

Defensive frailties have been brutally exposed, and the team has conceded goals at an alarming rate, compounding the pressure on a manager desperate to turn things around.

Fans openly chanted for his dismissal when Forest fell to a shock 3-2 defeat at home to FC Midtjylland in the Europa League, with many questioning the club’s decision to appoint him.

Postecoglou, if he is sacked inside the next 10 days, could become the shortest-reigning manager in Premier League history — breaking former Charlton Athletic boss Les Reed’s record — who was shown his P45 after just 41 days in the 2006/2007 season.

It may not be during this international break after all, according to reliable media sources like Fabrizio Romano, but Sky Sports have reported that Marinakis isn’t afraid to be ruthless and pull the trigger if Postecoglou doesn’t turn things around quickly.

Should the club decide to part ways with Postecoglou, a shortlist of replacement candidates is already emerging in the media.

Fulham managerMarcoSilvabefore the match

Leading the pack among rumored successors is Fulham’s Marco Silva. The Portuguese is respected for his experience navigating the Premier League with limited resources, and Silva also boasts a good relationship with Marinakis following their successful period at Olympiacos together.

Silva is a long-term target for Forest, so this is apparently one to keep an eye on, while Crystal Palace boss Oliver Glasner is also a “prime candidate” to replace Postecoglou, according to TEAMtalk.

There is another option too — former Liverpool boss Rafael Benitez.

Rafael Benitez open to Nottingham Forest managerial talks

The Spaniard, who guided Liverpool to a Champions League title in 2005, also won La Liga twice at Valencia and led Chelsea to a Europa League triumph 12 years ago.

Benitez also boasts a Coppa Italia, Italian Super Cup, FA Cup, UEFA Cup, Club World Cup, Community Shield and UEFA Super Cup on his illustrious CV, with the 65-year-old’s last job in management coming at Celta Vigo in 2024.

He hasn’t coached in England since leaving his lacklustre spell at Everton in 2022, but the tactician’s undoubted experience could be appealing to the Tricky Trees.

Benitez was spotted in “close proximity” to Marinakis during Arsenal’s 2-0 win over Olympiacos in the Champions League last week, and a report from GiveMeSport has now shared an update on the prospect of his potential move to Forest.

GMS report that Benitez would entertain an approach to manage Forest, as he’s keen to manage in the Premier League again, and the former Newcastle boss is under genuine consideration as an option.

Known for his tactical discipline and ability to organize teams defensively, Benitez could help to stabilize a struggling Forest side. His proven track record of guiding teams through relegation battles and achieving promotion — like he did during his spell at Newcastle — shows that he can thrive under pressure.

However, his inactivity lately is perhaps a cause for concern, especially given the increasing demands and pressure on managers to succeed.

Forget Pedro: Chelsea sealed an even better signing than Isak this summer

The international break is often met with groans across the Premier League, and for Chelsea, who are still grinning after their last-minute win against Liverpool last weekend, they might have wished to carry that form right over to the coming weeks.

However, the injury update on the Cole Palmer front has only added to the frustration, with the Blues talisman’s injury set to rule him out for another month, carrying into November. It’s worth we are merely 28 days away from the final international sojourn of the 2025 calendar.

But Enzo Maresca is fashioning a team of many parts, and Chelsea are no longer a one-trick pony. Signings have been made, and many have shown promising signs over the past several months.

Among them, Joao Pedro, who looks like a real star in the final third for the Londoners.

Joao Pedro's start to life at Chelsea

Pedro looked set for a move to Newcastle United this summer, but then Chelsea swept in and signed the Brazilian for £60m, ending his two-year stay on the south coast with Brighton & Hove Albion.

The 24-year-old is a versatile and hard-working forward who has been praised in the past as an “insane dribbler” by analyst Ben Mattinson. Sofascore note that he’s yet to miss a big chance in the Premier League, so everything’s there to suggest BlueCo have made a fine signing with this one.

With two goals and three assists from nine matches in all competitions this season, Pedro is settling nicely into Maresca’s system; though he will be eager to return to prolific form, having blanked across his past five games in all competitions.

Still, he’s playing well, and considering some of the figures thrown about this summer, with Liverpool breaking the British transfer record to sign Alexander Isak for £125m, this is actually a shrewd piece of business.

However, the Stamford Bridge side sealed a signature this summer who might be shrewder still.

Chelsea's jackpot signing

Many signings have been made at Chelsea since Todd Boehly first took a seat in the boardroom, but the initial £29m paid for Estevao Willian might be the pick of the big bunch.

He tapped home Chelsea’s winner against Liverpool on Sunday, and he oozes confidence and style when on the ball, 18 years old but at peace with the rigours and scrutiny of the Premier League.

Already at this nascent stage of his career, Estevao has cultivated a wealth of experience on the senior stage, and there’s a prolificness to his play that tells of a successful future at the highest level.

After all, the aforementioned Mattinson has provided his take, saying the Brazil international might even be a “future Ballon d’Or winner”, such is his quality.

For Brazil, he is performing at a prodigious rate. Only yesterday across the globe did he bag twice as Carlo Ancelotti’s Seleção side thrashed South Korea 5-0.

Given the potential growth both financially and on the field, Chelsea chiefs must be delighted that they won the race, especially since Chelsea beat off vested competition from Barcelona and Real Madrid to seal the youth’s signature in 2024, ahead of his arrival from Palmeiras several months ago.

Is the sky the limit? It might just be. Estevao is the real deal; he has scored and assisted in the Premier League already.

In hindsight, this might prove to be the signing of the summer. Liverpool landed a world-class striker in Isak, but they paid a staggering sum. Isak, 26, has yet to get going at Anfield, one goal and one assist across six games.

Estevao matches that, and he’s playing with verve and gusto. He’s playing like the superstar in the making that Chelsea know they have landed.

Estevao 2.0: Chelsea let one of "the best young wingers in Europe" leave for £0

The incredible former Chelsea talent could end up being as good as Estevao.

Gous cuts loose to help Islamabad United maintain unbeaten PSL run

There was a heated exchange between Colin Munro and Iftikhar Ahmed over the latter’s action during the chase

Andries Gous led United’s strong chase•PCB

Islamabad United continued their scintillating run in PSL 2025, romping to a fifth victory on the trot after Andries Gous produced a powerful display to lead their comfortable chase of 169.Opting to bat first, Multan Sultans were unscathed through the powerplay, amassing 48 without loss, but more runs were needed on a slow surface with the fielding restrictions in place. From there on, the United spinners applied a stranglehold with their variations.Mohammad Nawaz broke the opening stand when he had Yasir Khan taken at long-on. Usman Khan was able to keep the score moving in his characteristic agricultural ways but Mohammad Rizwan found it tough to shift gears and his struggles came to an end with a soft dismissal off Shadab Khan.Usman continued to make good progress and brought up his fifty in 29 deliveries, but Michael Bracewell fell to Riley Meredith when he miscued a pull. Iftikhar Ahmed gloved Jason Holder to the keeper, the West Indian continuing to impress in his maiden PSL stint, making life tough with his cunning cutters and steep bounce.Usman was short of his crease when he tried to hustle for the second run in the penultimate over and Kamran Ghulam produced a useful hand as Sultans huffed and puffed their way to 168 for 5.United’s spinners dominated the proceedings and helped keep a lid on the score, which ultimately made the difference as Sultans’ spin attack struggled to stall momentum after the powerplay and couldn’t exert pressure to create opportunities for wickets.Riley Meredith celebrates a wicket with Jason Holder•PCB

Chasing a modest total with dew coming down, the reliable Sahibzada Farhan cashed in on his rich vein of form. He provided another brisk start with 22 off 13 balls before getting ruffled by a short delivery from Ubaid Shah that cramped him for room.Gous was joined by Colin Munro and together they piled misery on Sultans in a stand of 81 off 48 balls. Munro was involved in a heated exchanged with Iftikhar in the tenth over when he appeared to question the bowler’s action, which led to a brief delay as the umpires stepped in.Munro fell shortly after, picking out Iftikhar at long-on, but Nawaz joined Gous in another brisk partnership of 55 off 39 balls to ensure the result was never in doubt. Gous repaid the team management’s faith and conjured a chanceless performance, growing in confidence as the innings progressed. For Sultans, Josh Little couldn’t make early inroads, Usama Mir was inconsistent with his length as he was taken for 41 off his four overs, and Chris Jordan didn’t look threatening as his two overs cost 24.In contrast, all engines are firing at full throttle for United who further solidified their position at the top. Sultans find themselves languishing down at the bottom of the table and it’s becoming imperative to win for them to stay in contention.

PIF must regret selling Newcastle star who's like "Keane, Scholes & Zidane"

Newcastle United fans would surely have been glad to see 7pm on Monday, 1st of September roll around. It signalled the end of what was a torrid transfer window for the Magpies, despite late additions. Not only did they miss out on several key signings, including Hugo Ekitike and Bryan Mbuemo, but they also lost a key player.

That player, of course, was Alexander Isak. His transfer saga was the talk of the summer, and things went right until the final day of the window, when his drawn-out departure to Liverpool was finally confirmed.

Over the past couple of years, the Magpies have had to sell players to keep up with PSR regulations, meaning they have got rid of some important figures.

Newcastle’s most recent big sales

There is no doubt that losing Isak this summer will be tough for Newcastle to recover from on the pitch. He is now the player who holds the British transfer record of £125m after his deadline day move to Anfield.

For the Magpies, replacing his record of 62 goals and 11 assists in 109 appearances at St James’ Park will not be easy. In his last two seasons at the club, he’s bagged over 20 goals, with last season’s tally of 23 his best.

However, it is not just Isak who has been a major sale over the years. Losing Allan-Saint Maximin to Al-Ahli back in 2023 saw them lose attacking flair on the wing. He made 124 appearances for the club, scoring 13 goals and assisting a further 21.

Another player who recently left the club under the PIF regime, who could have become an important part of Eddie Howe’s squad, was Yankuba Minteh.

Since leaving the North East for the South Coast and Brighton, he has seven goals and five assists in 40 games.

There is one sale that really sticks out in recent seasons, however, who has gone on to do great things since leaving St James’ Park.

Elliot Anderson is Newcastle’s most frustrating sale

The summer of 2024 was one of the key time periods during which Newcastle had to make sales to comply with PSR. That was the summer Minteh departed, although looking back, he was not the most frustrating sale.

Instead, most Newcastle fans would surely agree that Whitley Bay-born midfielder Elliot Anderson was the one who got away that summer. He joined Nottingham Forest for a fee of £35m, which represented pure profit as he is an academy graduate.

The boyhood Newcastle fan made 55 appearances at St James’ Park before his departure to the East Midlands. He has gone from strength to strength across his 45 appearances in Garibaldi Red, scoring twice and assisting seven goals.

That was summed up with a sensational player of the match performance on England debut last week at Villa Park. He ran the show for Thomas Tuchel’s side, and talkSPORT pundit Max Scott later said that he plays like he’s “Roy Keane, Paul Scholes and Zinedine Zidane” combined.

Based on his statistics from the last couple of seasons at Forest, it is easy to see where the praise has come from.

For example, last term, he averaged 1.2 key passes and 4 tackles and interceptions per 90 minutes, and in three Premier League games in 2025/26, he has already averaged 1.7 key passes and 4.3 tackles and interceptions per game.

Newcastle fans must surely look at their academy star as one that got away. A midfield of Anderson, Bruno Guimaraes and Sandro Tonali would have been a sight to behold at St James’ Park.

Even though Anderson was sold to help boost PSR, this is surely a move that PIF and Howe regret, considering how well he is performing for club and country.

NSWE to make January move for "amazing" £40m CF with 6 goals vs Aston Villa

Aston Villa are now set to make a move for an “amazing” striker, who has been identified as a priority target for the January transfer window.

Villa eyeing striker after Watkins' slow start

Ollie Watkins has been one of the driving forces behind Villa’s resurgence under the helm of Unai Emery, with the striker maintaining a fantastic goal and assist record across the past five Premier League seasons.

However, it would be fair to say the striker has made a slow start to the new campaign, having failed to register a single goal contribution despite featuring for 90 minutes in each of the Villans’ opening three games.

Of course, it is still very early days, and the 29-year-old still has plenty of time to get back on track, but it now appears as though Emery wants to bring in another striker during the January transfer window.

Indeed, according to a report from Caught Offside, Aston Villa and NSWE are now set to make a move for Crystal Palace striker Jean Philippe-Mateta, with the Europa League side planning to maintain pressure on the Eagles throughout the January window.

With Villa aiming to secure qualification for the Champions League once again, they are keen to bring in more depth in attacking areas, and Mateta has been identified as a priority target, but there is set to be competition for his signature.

Leeds United and Newcastle United have also pinpointed the striker as a priority target, given the level of his performances last season, but any deal may be relatively expensive, given that Palace are set to hold out for a fee of around £40m.

"Amazing" Mateta would provide Emery with great depth

Given that Emery implements a 4-2-3-1 system, it is difficult to see how the 28-year-old would fit into the side, although Emery has been willing to drop Watkins in the past, with the England international hitting out after not starting against Paris Saint-Germain last season.

The striker said: “I was fuming I wasn’t playing. I let him (Emery) know that. He’s the manager at the end of the day. I respect his decision. But I’m not one of the players happy to sit on the bench.

Aston Villa's most expensive signings of all time

NSWE have splashed the cash in recent years.

ByCharlie Smith Sep 5, 2025

“It’s something I haven’t experienced before, missing out on the biggest stage. You always want to play, especially in the Champions League.

Given that Mateta is the main man at Palace, scoring 17 goals in all competitions last season, he is also unlikely to be willing to sit on the bench, but the signing of the Frenchman would provide Emery with great depth in attack. He has also loved playing against Villa in the past, scoring six goals in 10 appearances.

Lauded as “amazing in the box” by manager Oliver Glasner, Mateta is a proven Premier League striker in the prime of his career, but Emery would be a real selection dilemma in attack if Villa were to win the race for his signature.

As the New Zealand Test squad reconvened at the Hagley Oval, three weeks on from a remarkable 3-0 win in India, they welcomed a familiar face back in their ranks.Kane Williamson, now shorn of the groin injury that kept him out of that historic tour, was donning BlackCaps training gear once more on Monday, as the hosts trained in the afternoon in a sun-kissed Christchurch. A three-hour-long 60 for Northern Districts against Auckland marked a tidy return to action after two months out. By all accounts, he is good to go for the first Test, which begins here on Thursday.New Zealand head coach Gary Stead confirmed the 34-year-old will slot back in. However he admitted the necessary reshuffle will require some consideration.Related

Will Young’s stellar turn as Williamson’s understudy in India – Player of the Series with 244 runs – has presented a conundrum. One which, on the face of it, has an easy if cold-hearted solution. Nevertheless, Stead wants time to talk things through with skipper Tom Latham.”Obvious Kane will come back into the side,” Stead said. “He’s a superb player as we know and that creates some selection headaches for Tom and I to get our heads around in the next day or so.”Kane is one of the best in the world, so he will be playing somewhere in that line-up. It’s just how we manage to shape the rest of the team around that.”Stead ceded the rest of the team is a formality given the pitch is expected to play to type. “Going on traditional Hagley wickets, I imagine there’ll be four seamers out there.” The identity of the fourth remains up in the air, with Nathan Smith and Jacob Duffy battling it out to join Matt Henry, Will O’Rourke and the retiring Tim Southee.Indeed Southee’s farewell tour adds a little extra on this three-match series. The 1-1 draw at the start of 2023 between these two culminated in a one-run thriller in Wellington that fell the way of the hosts. Now with an extra match – and for World Test Championship points this time – there is scope for this to be a thriller.New Zealand are identifiable favourites to take this series – with the onus on winning 3-0 to make their second WTC final in three cycles. And following their success in India, a second title could well be on the cards.”No doubt it gives you confidence as a group but it shows the ebbs and flows of international cricket,” Stead said. “You can see what’s happening in Perth [in the first Test between Australia and India], I’m not sure anyone would have written that script either. The WTC has made teams extremely competitive, teams try and get somewhat of a home advantage to pick up your points there.”[I am] Sure it’s going to be a cracker of a Test series. We’re going to see some fireworks I would suggest.”

Shan Masood gets PCB contract 'subject to captaincy', Babar and Rizwan alone in top category

The revised central contracts for the Pakistan men’s cricket team have been announced, nearly four months after they were due.Shan Masood, who captained Pakistan’s Test side to their first series win since July 2023 this week, keeps his spot in Category B. Whether he lasts the full year in that position, though, is uncertain, with a media release from the PCB stating his retention in the category was “subject to captaincy”. There has been fevered speculation over how long he would keep the Test reins when Pakistan lost his first six Tests in charge. But the PCB going public in spelling out the contingency in his central contract a day after Pakistan’s comeback series win over England is unlikely to have a stabilising effect.Babar Azam retains his position in the highest category despite missing the last two Test matches against England after a run of poor form, while Shaheen Afridi drops down to the second tier, leaving Mohammad Rizwan as the only other A category player.Fakhar Zaman, meanwhile, misses out on a central contract for the first time in eight years. There were reported to be concerns over his fitness, though his relationship with the PCB has deteriorated of late.ESPNcricinfo Ltd

The board issued him a show-cause notice after a tweet he put out two weeks ago where he criticised the decision to drop Babar Azam. The post remains up, and Fakhar has not apologised, with the matter understood to be with his legal team. Last month, when chairman Mohsin Naqvi organised a “connection camp” to speak to get senior players to air their views, Fakhar was among the most outspoken, singling out a senior official for particularly trenchant criticism. His long-time ODI opening partner Imam-ul-Haq also misses out on a central contract while there’s been category deflation across the board. Just five players of 25 are in the A or B categories as opposed to 11 last year. Sajid Khan and Noman Ali, who didn’t feature last year, have made a comeback off the back of their recent heroics against England, both placed in the C category, with Noman’s inclusion subject to fitness. Khurram Shahzad, Mohammad Ali, Mohammad Hurraira, Usman Khan and Irfan Khan have all been given their maiden central contracts, all finding a spot in the D category.Last year the PCB agreed landmark three-year deals on central contracts, giving players their highest pay raises in history, and, more notably, a fixed share of revenue from the PCB’s earnings at the ICC. The board has stuck to the same arrangement this time, only tweaking which categories particular players are placed in, as was previously agreed. The contracts will be backdated to cover the period starting July 1, 2024, running for another 12 months before a revision can be made.Category A (2): Babar Azam, Mohammad Rizwan
Category B (3): Naseem Shah, Shaheen Shah Afridi, Shan Masood
Category C (9): Abdullah Shafique, Abrar Ahmed, Haris Rauf, Noman Ali, Saim Ayub, Sajid Khan, Salman Ali Agha, Saud Shakeel, Shadab Khan
Category D (11): Aamir Jamal, Haseebullah, Kamran Ghulam, Khurram Shahzad, Mir Hamza, Mohammad Abbas Afridi, Mohammad Ali, Mohammad Hurraira, Muhammad Irfan Khan, Mohammad Wasim Jnr, Usman Khan
